Since he was a baby his parents weren't all that fond of him, but they thought it was because he was still developing, so they tried to keep calm and don't freak over his eyes color. As he grew up though, it only got worse, to the point his parents wouldn't even let him leave their house and by the age of seven, when they finally got too much from Mark's eyes changing colors non stop, they left him. Since Mark had never really gone out he could've been left a block away from his previous home that he still wouldn't know how to go back.

He grew up in the streets, what he could do with his eyes got him most of the things he needed to, because people were afraid of him. At the age of sixteen he was pretty used to it already, he could keep his eyes in a normal dark brown color, which got him a few friends here and there and even a part time job - but he didn't feel at home at all. It was by then when Miss Peregrine found him and he didn't even think twice about going with her - she was different, she looked like she could be pretty strict and she was indeed, but she also had this caring side that made Mark give up on any attempts to not go with her.

It ended up being one of the best things that ever happened in his life. At Miss Peregrine's he learnt how to read and write - something he had never done before. He was good with maths, because he knew how to use it even if had never gone to school before, but those were the last things he was glad about. Here he found who he really is. Mark is a bright guy, very friendly one and he tends to help the others out a lot. He likes to make people feel special, mostly the ones who just arrive, because he knows how it to feel lost and unwanted.
