Sunghoon was very much born with a golden spoon in his mouth. He's the son of an extremely wealthy family of nobles with close ties to the queen, raised on matters that involved the correct posture rather than how to survive. During his childhood Sunghoon read quite a bit as he was denied the freedom to interact with others his age. As such, he developed a fascination with the outside world - especially foreign countries like India and the Americas.
When he turned 21 the young man assumed he would leave his family and pursue some great adventure. Instead, Sunghoon was married off to the daughter of another noble family and told she must have a child before their five year anniversary. As the man never truly loved her this obviously didn't happen, and he was shunned by his family, his wife (and her family). His freedom barred they kept him in the house even as he aged past 30. Sunghoon has done nothing worthwhile in this life, and made a rash decision to leave his family by running away.
He became the captain of the Tabula purely by accident. His family was donating the ship to the armada and he managed to worm his way into the position without anyone knowing. As for his crew's reaction they still don't know where Sunghoon comes from or what his leadership skills are like, as they haven't met any trouble yet.
