"you can't control the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails."

change was an inevitable factor in everyone's life. no matter who you were, what you did (or who you did, for that matter), you weren't exempt from the one solid thing in life. for minwoo, this was something hard to grasp. everything had always been easy for him, up until now. up until donghyun had offered him something he couldn't resist: a start of a new life.

as he stood and reflected on everything in his life, minwoo concluded that he had it pretty easy. nothing was ever too hard for him. opportunities had typically fallen straight into his lap, without any real effort given from him. it was easy. hell, it was even boring. but who was he to complain, when people had it worse off than he did? people were dying from starvation when he had the opportunity to eat full, well-balanced meals (not that he did, though he was trying to get better at it). people were dying from hypothermia or heat while he had a roof over his head to keep him safe. people were dying, he was living. there was nothing he should be complaining about, not when he had an easy breezy life while many others struggled.

the wind whipped his face, drawing his bangs up and off his forehead, exposing him to the bitter cold of the ocean. he often came out to the lighthouse to calm his frantic mind; after all, anxiety plagued the poor boy's system all day every day. it was nights like these, the cold air whipping about him, seafoam nipping at his exposed cheeks, cool air leaving him breathless, that helped ease his tense and overworked demeanor. yes, life was easy, but it was too easy for the young man. he wanted to do something with his life, not just glide through until age hit him in the face and he was six feet under the earth.

which is why donghyun's offer of a new life struck him and drew him in.

"we're leaving. we're going, and we're never looking back." minwoo remembered that night, curled up in donghyun's bed, sheets tangled between their legs, as if it was just last night. their bodies were pressed so close, heat being transferred between the two of them as they lay there, soaking in each other's presence. it was like this almost every night, but there was a change. donghyun was growing restless; he wanted more. and he wanted minwoo to come with him.

it took him almost a week before he gave donghyun an answer. did he want to leave his life behind, enter this new and dangerous area? did he want to give up the easy life he had and enter something harder? he almost shied away from everything in front of him. earlier that night, he had called donghyun to tell him he would come with him. and yet here he was, standing on the balcony of the lighthouse, the big round light spinning soft circles around him. his shadow appeared as the light faced his back, dancing away back into the night as the light spun away from him. the air was his sanctuary. it was all he knew.

his phone ringing caught him off guard, pulling him from his deep thoughts.

"hey, donghyun."

"minwoo?"

he took his time before responding, voice coming out as a soft whisper. "yeah?"

"you ready for this?"

minwoo stayed silent, lips pursing into a thin line. he could lie, say yes, and tumble into this head on. alternatively, he could be honest and express his fears to donghyun, potentially losing the chance to change. the words came out of his mouth before he really thought of them. "no, but i dont have to be. i just have to do it."

"i'm proud of you, baby." donghyun's smile could be heard through the phone, earning a small laugh from minwoo's lips.

"come and get me. i'm at the lighthouse."

as he hung up, minwoo shoved his hands into his pockets, gazing out into the foamy night sea once more. the moon shone bright on the calm surface on the horizon, peaceful waves tumbling over each other and crashing into the rocks at the base of the lighthouse. minwoo found comfort and peace in the easy things. but now was not a time for comfort and peace.

it was time to embrace change.
