yuqi wasn't always song yuqi, no - once upon a time, around half a millenium ago, her name was song yingyue, and she was the daughter of nobility in the tang dynasty. naturally, her parents intended on using their only daughter for political power, deciding to marry her off into another family of nobles. yuqi met her fiance a few times, and she decided he wasn't so bad - but she didn't want to get married. she wanted to see the world, to learn of life, to amount to more than she was as a noblewoman - and so running away the night before her wedding was the way to do it.
at first, yuqi was unsure of where to go. but then she remembered something from her limited education as a woman - and it was that there was a mountain in which an immortal often came down upon to meet with her students. determined, yuqi climbed the mountain and met with the immortal. due to her determination, she eventually became one of he xiangu's most promising students.
he xiangu, known to many as one of the eight immortals, was known to be a chaste moral exemplar, and was an inspiration to all women that longed for immortality. yingyue was one of them, and so she worked hard underneath her teacher's hand. eventually, he xiangu noticed how dedicated yingyue was to being compassionate and caring and respectful - all traits that immortals should have. so she took yingyue under her wing as an apprentice. there, the girl learned all kinds of things - from alchemy, to medicine, to morality, to maidenhood, and much, much more.
she learned of love, as well - or at least, something like it. she met a fellow apprentice that went by the name zihao - but the problem was that he was the apprentice of lu dongbin, who was famed as a womanizer. as much as yingyue would have let herself fall for zihao despite her distrust of men, he was too much like his master - never committing himself to one girl at a time. she rejected all his advances, and focused on her apprenticeship with he xiangu. after all, that was what was important, wasn't it?
still, yingyue's heart fluttered every time zihao called her by the nickname he'd given her - 'yuqi', meaning precious jade.
eventually, she was tasked to retrieve a document from the purple room on the island of the immortals. the purple room was said to hold the knowledge of gaining an immortal body, and yingyue, being an ever so curious woman, looked through more documents than she was supposed to.
and she'd found the secret to gaining an immortal body.
which is exactly what she did - the girl undertook the quest for immortality, eventually gaining an immortal body without the will of the immortals. as much as she wanted to rejoice, however - they found out. and as a result, they banished her to earth, stripping her of her memories and dooming her to an immortal life without reason or purpose.
she remembered nothing once she was brought down to earth - nothing but the sweet call of what she assumed to be her name by a melodic voice she did not know the owner of -
"song yuqi."

yuqi is a very sweet girl, although she constantly gets lost in her head. she's kind and friendly to everyone as she was taught to be, and often thinks of strangers before herself. however, she's quite wary around men, although she remains polite around them - she came from a time in which women were constantly looked down on by men, which is why she mistrusts them. she especially hates men that constantly play with girls' hearts, which is why she can respond rather aggressively to men that choose to flirt with her.
