jang yeeun was a normal human girl during the edo period in the 1700s. she was really no different from many other young girls as she strived to live her life the same as her mother had.

she had planned a whole life ahead of her since she had been 15 after falling in love with a boy one year older than her. they planned to marry as soon they both reached the age of 19 and 20 respectively. having both their family's blessings with her, the lovers went through with a traditional marriage before they departed their homes and settled in another village not far from their families.

for the first few months, they were content as could be, her husband raising crops to sell while yeeun dedicated her time to pottery with many other females to make for the wealthy residing in the city.

however, soon terrible weather struck many villages, resulting in the kyōhō famine. the weather not only damaged their agriculture but also brought in infestation of locust into their crops. their food surplus began to fail and so did many of the villagers' health upon not having food to survive off of. among the many people who eventually died was yeeun's husband from the famine. yeeun, already on the brink of death, was completely heartbroken, refusing to move from her husband's corpse until she passed away as well.

the remaining few survivors quickly moved away from the village, feeling a bad omen about a place where so many had died. no one had bothered to bury the corpses, so one night, the raging and sorrowful spirit of yeeun's possessed the bones of the villagers who had died, including her husband's, taking the form of a gashadokuro. having died from starvation, yeeun used her invisible state to advantage and ate hundreds of people who crossed paths with her after midnight. the humane part of yeeun knew what she was doing was not like her at all. however, she was too weak compared to her insatiable hunger for more, and thus the real yeeun deep inside the vengeful spirit.

she carried on like this for over a century before she grew strong enough to control herself. tired and ashamed of her heartlessness, yeeun heard of magnolia springs from another supernatural being (she had assumed they were at least). she returned to her human form for the first time since her death, having no idea it was possible to even turn back to herself, for she would've done it a long time ago if she had. she wasn't completely human since she was still a spirit, but it was the closest to human she had ever felt in a long time.

yeeun moved to magnolia springs for good during the early 1900s. she had been allowed to stay there as long as she didn't wreak havoc or let her hunger kill other residents. agreeing with this, she chose to work in the supermarket to regain a sense of life and duty, as well as to satisfy her hunger there instead of eating the innocent.

Personality yeeun strives to be perfect in anything she does, having long forgotten that it was alright to make mistakes. she didn't believe in such things anymore since she had committed plenty of grave mistakes for over a century. she appears cold and cynical, but is timid and afraid of becoming close to someone, scared that she might end up losing them too.
