A blackened rose wraps around his neck, charred poppies lie lifeless against his collar bone, an ashen gladiolus withering along his left forearm, and the twin iris' shriveling and black against his left hand, the scent of smoke that never leaves him; they're all he has left of his family. When he was only six years old a fire tore through his home leaving him as the only survivor. 

After the horrific fire that killed all five members of his family Taemin was sent away to live with his Aunt. she was a bitter, angry woman who resented taemin for how much he resembled his mother. she had never wanted children and never had time for one. she didn't make an exception when she was forced to take in taemin.  The poor child had always been troubled, suffering from chronic night terrors even before the fire. his troubles only grew after the incident and his aunt repeatedly refused to send him to therapy against doctor's advice. she changed her mind pretty quickly when she came home from work early one day to find Taemin trying to light the family dog on fire. she had him shipped off to the nearest psychiatric facility and washed her hands of him entirely. 

Taemin grew up in and out of intensive therapy programs and mental hospitals. by the time he was 18 he'd been diagnosed with severe depression, bipolar, and schizophernia with visual and auditory hallucinations in the form of his deceased family, and he had attempted suicide multiple times. he is considered legally disabled because of his mental state and he lives mostly on goverment assistance. recently he's been allowed to volunteer at the local fire department as an emergency call operator. he signed up for the agency at the encouragement of his therapist, but he doesn't believe that he has a soulmate. his skin and his heart have been too tainted by the burned remnants of his family.
