chaeyoung was notorious in high school in a very typical way. she hung out with what people considered were a "bad crowd" and picked up a bunch of bad habits from them. she smokes occasionally when she feels emotions she doesn't want to feel anymore. when she's stressed, sad, lonely, or whatever, she'll take a long drag from a cigarette and forget for a little while. her mother doesn't yell at her for it because she smokes herself, and anyways, she's not even at home often enough to see chaeyoung smoke. she skips classes whenever she wants to, usually going off school grounds to buy some random junk food or sitting on the windowsill of one of the back staircases that no one uses and listens to music. chaeyoung would call herself a "free soul" but, everyone else called her a "delinquent".

when she was in her second year of high school, she even got embroiled in a bullying rumor that some random freshman started. apparently they had seen her head into a dark alleyway behind a freshman girl from another school. (what they don't know is that freshman girl was being followed by an older man until chaeyoung came, her dark hair free flowing in the night and chaeyoung telling the girl to watch her back. they don't know that chaeyoung was the one who walked that freshman girl home, the girl thanking her over and over for looking out for her, they don't know that.) it all got cleared up with school administration but, she was a bit more feared in her own school after that incident, nobody wanted to talk to her for sure. not like chaeyoung cared too much about what others thought of her.

in all honesty, chaeyoung was surprised she made it into university at all.

she's not stupid, but she was never the one to actually apply herself in her studies. her teachers described her as a "would get high marks if she applied herself" type. so when she was at home, her mother absent from the house as per usual, and her acceptance letter showed up. the only thing she could do was laugh hysterically as she stared at the words on the page, tummy starting to hurt from how loud she was laughing. chaeyoung was sure the neighbors could hear her with how loud she was being.

she's independent and at this point completely autonomous because her mother would disappear from the house for months sometimes. chaeyoung can cook, clean, even pay bills since she started high school. chaeyoung didn't even bother moving out of her house, her mother was away enough that it felt like she was rooming solo anyways.

when she's running short on funds and her mother still hasn't bothered to show up with more rent money, she picks up random night shifts at the nearby corner store, since no one likes to work overnight shifts anyways. plus, chaeyoung usually is awake, so it's not like she's changing her sleep schedule much.

she doesn't know who her father is, nor does she really care at this point.

if you look at chaeyoung at a surface level, you would think she would be rude, mean, or dangerous. after all, when she finally got out high school, she dyed her hair bright orange. she hangs around seedy places and is usually spotted at the bar or in weird alleyways. despite how she comes off, she's actually not a mean person at all. she's very laid back and comfortable in her own skin. she's surprisingly good at reading people's emotions, and she can tell easily if you're secretly judging her on the inside. chaeyoung's very honest as well, unafraid to say what's on her mind, but she does have a brain to mouth filter. she's not dumb, and if you can get her to commit to something (good luck, she has commitment issues with her mother away all the time), she may actually surprise you.

chaeyoung is most certainly a night owl, she prefers the moon over the sun. as a result you can find her out and about at various parties, a beer can in her hand, or maybe she's at an old playground, sitting on the swingset.

she's a bit careless, fun to be around at parties because she's one of the people encouraging people to do dumb things. but once in a while, someone will spot her helping some people home, arm thrown around her shoulder as she puts them in the nearest cab back to the dorms.

after drinking, chaeyoung's memory gets worse.  if you want her to remember something, talk to her when she's sober.

lee chaeyoung doesn't care about what people think of her, and does what she wants when she wants to.

to most she's mysterious, someone that can't be figured out. but in reality? she truly is a free soul.
