masquerades disclose the reality of souls. as long as no one sees who we are, we can tell the most intimate details of our life. we all wear masks, and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our skin.

Hidden Boy

Stolen from his nursery as a mere babe Deimos' life went completely off course. Once the second son of a wealthy Thalassan couple, he instead became the ward of a delusional, cultist fanatic. From his infancy to his childhood this kidnapper claimed she was his caretaker, stringing Deimos along into believing that he was rescued by her. She is the one who placed the mask on him from the first day she held the boy, condemning him to a hidden life.

During his childhood years Deimos was schooled at home, receiving daily lessons in math, literature and other subjects. While he was never explicitly taught the religion his caretaker believes in, he has been exposed to it for almost all his life. It is a belief system that never caught on with the rest of the sea's inhabitants, a scripture that dedicates itself to dead gods and cult-like rituals. What he did hear of this religion is partly what shaped Deimos into the young man he is today, for he was told by his caretaker that she was watching over him so he could one day become the vessel of a creature called The Monster. She would tell him stories of this supposed ancient being, one who's coming would bring about the destruction of the world.

"You are ugly, tainted." She said, readjusting the mask over his face. "If anyone so looks at your eyes they would be cursed, my little Camella. Do not ever take this off."

It was only around the age of 14 that Deimos started to interact with other people, as his caretaker enrolled him in the Galini public school system. Her rules were clean cut and clear. Deimos must never, ever remove his mask. He must not let other people know what she teaches him, and he most certainly cannot stray too far from home. During this time Deimos also made his first friend, a foreign man by the name of Sebastian de Ureña. He is the only person that was ever allowed within the walls of Deimos' two-person home, and even taught the boy how to draw and cook, as well as speak Spanish. For a bit of time the boy was happy...only for the man to disappear one day, never to be seen again.

Deimos was devestated, but had no time to be sad as his caretaker continued to push him in his studies, claiming the boy needed enough knowledge to please the gods. However, when he finished his classes at school, Deimos was actually barred by his guardian from entering the local community college, and now he spends most of his days at home. Sometimes she allows him to leave the house as long as he's at the station on time for her to pick him up, and taking advantage of this small bit of freedom Deimos enjoys his time drawing at the park and other areas of the city.

she had blue skin,
and so did he.
he kept it hid,
and so did she.
they searched for blue
their whole life through,
then passed right by —
and never knew.

- s.s.

There are a lot of little quirks and things that make up Deimos as a whole. Here are just a few.

  • The Monster: Every kid has a childhood night-mare, and Deimos' just happened to be what he was told he would become from a very young age. His caretaker describes The Monster as a large, black being made of shadows, with sharp horns on its head and glowing yellow eyes. The Monster apparently has the ability to curse any Thalassan that dares look at it, put out the fire of Galene's essence and essentially destroy the world in a single second. Deimos believes that soon he will be taken over by this ancient being and he as himself now will cease to exist. This has caused him to have many nightmare, even outside of childhood. They tend to leave the young man shaking as he wakes up in the middle of the night, and his sketchbooks are often full of the creature he sees in this dreams. What he doesn't know is that The Monster isn't real at all, but a figment of his caretaker's beliefs that she has simply passed down to him. What his caretaker doesn't know is that Deimos has started to question this belief.

  • Sebastian de Ureña: Hailing from a Thalassan colony off the coast of spain, this man was an important figure in Deimos' life, and even gave the young man his Spanish name - Damián. The reason his caretaker allowed this man into their home and consequently Deimos' life is only because he was something of a historian, who may or may not have found an old book with writings of ancient Thalassans that followed the same dead religion his caretaker believes in. As she wanted this book for herself, she contacted the man, but had to wait many years for the book to be completely translated. Once that was finished, Sebastian just...disappeared (or so Deimos has been led to believe). It's because of Sebastian that Deimos now draws as well as cooks, both used as ways to stave off boredom at home where he's forced to stay most of the time. This man was also the only one who affectionately called him "mi pequeño Damián."

  • The Mask: Essentially, since the day he was born Deimos was forced to wear a covering over his face. As he grew up, his caretaker would somehow have a mask of bigger size to replace the old one, and the only time he was allowed to have it off was every few weeks when his caretaker would clean his face. As such, Deimos has no idea what his face looks like, since it's always covered by the mask even when he sleeps (hence why he only sleeps on his back). The mask is made of dark, navy blue material that almost looks black, with strange symbols etched around the sides. It covers his entire face, and has a sort of tinted effect over his eyes. He can see the world, but the world can't see him.

  • Home: The house in which Deimos has grown up in can't really be described as a house. It certainly isn't a home either. The entire thing is a one floor building with no winders and only one door. Inside of it there are several rooms, including a living area, a kitchen, a closet, a dining room and three bedrooms (one is used by Deimos, and the other his caretaker). You can imagine the interior as similar to a Terran bunker, again without any windows. If you're ever inside and you looke closely, you'll also realize that there aren't any mirrors.

  • Dead Religion: Originating in a very ancient, Thalassan city in perhaps the farthest corner of the globe this so-called "religion" is one that has believers looking to false gods of chaos and darkness. In order for them to be "properly worshipped" followers must engage in rituals, private ceremonies and sacrifices which are said to increase the follower's power or standing in the world of those who believe in this. Deimos does not know the full extent of the religion his caretaker has taught him, just the basics of The Monster, his supposed destiny (or calling as she likes to say) and a few odd bits and pieces here and there. His caretaker has never done a ritual with or in front of the young man, but that may be soon to change.

basics

Rather soft-spoken and quiet most people don't even remember what his voice sounds like. Deimos keeps to himself as per the instructions of his caretaker, paying careful attention to her warnings. In a public setting the young man keeps his head down, and doesn't try to attract attention. It's inevitable, however, as his mask tends to turn heads. At home Deimos stays inside his room, only venturing into the living area portion when his caretaker is out. There he'll usually sit and watch cartoons. Even when she's gone he doesn't take off his mask. There are days when the young man's wondering gets the best of him - what does he look like? Is it nice to have friends? Where are nice places to go? He shuts down these thoughts as quick as they come, doing his best to avoid temptation. Deimos is very much strung along by his caretaker, doing as she says without question, and never voicing what goes against her teachings. The doubt is starting to get to him, threatening to shake the entire world he's known, but it's going to take something big to push him over the edge。

likes

Citrus flavors, colorful coral reefs, the evening time, watching certain types of children's cartoons, smooth things (like shells, tabletops, etc.), drawing, being in his room。

dislikes

Scary animals (sharks, large rays, etc.), doing the "wrong" thing, doubting what he's been taught to believe, any kind of green vegetable。

hobbies

Drawing (most things around him or what he sees in his dreams), cooking, collecting marine fossils。

fears

Hurting others, being alone, the world beyond the ocean, too much light, the Monster, seeing his own face。

quirks

Whenever he's nervous he tends to play with the fingers on his left hand, almost always has a pencil or pen tucked behind his ear, squints when reading things far away as he needs glasses, ambidextrous (mostly uses his left hand for writing, and the other for drawing or painting), sleeps on his back (never on his sides or stomach)。

bad habits

Forgets to eat quite often since he's been told to only eat at home (since he has to lift his mask slightly), losing himself in his own daydreams to the point where he isn't aware of what's going on around him, touches the back of his head every few minutes to make sure his mask is secure。

wants & desires

To just understand what his caretaker teaches him (what they say is going to happen to him), to be in love and to be loved by somebody, be recognized as an artist and make a living off it。
