History / about / bio

Hidden Boy

Stolen from his nursery as a mere babe Deimos' life went completely off course. Once the second son of a wealthy Thalassan couple, he instead became the ward of a delusional, cultist fanatic. From his infancy to his childhood this kidnapper claimed she was his caretaker, stringing Deimos along into believing that he was rescued by her. She is the one who placed the mask on him from the first day she held the boy, condemning him to a hidden life.

During his childhood years Deimos was schooled at home, receiving daily lessons in math, literature and other subjects. While he was never explicitly taught the religion his caretaker believes in, he has been exposed to it for almost all his life. It is a belief system that never caught on with the rest of the sea's inhabitants, a scripture that dedicates itself to dead gods and cult-like rituals. What he did hear of this religion is partly what shaped Deimos into the young man he is today, for he was told by his caretaker that she was watching over him so he could one day become the vessel of a creature called The Monster. She would tell him stories of this supposed ancient being, one who's coming would bring about the destruction of the world.

"You are ugly, tainted." She said, readjusting the mask over his face. "If anyone so looks at your eyes they would be cursed, my little Camella. Do not ever take this off."

It was only around the age of 14 that Deimos started to interact with other people, as his caretaker enrolled him in the Galini public school system. Her rules were clean cut and clear. Deimos must never, ever remove his mask. He must not let other people know what she teaches him, and he most certainly cannot stray too far from home. During this time Deimos also made his first friend, a foreign man by the name of Sebastian de Ureña. He is the only person that was ever allowed within the walls of Deimos' two-person home, and even taught the boy how to draw and cook, as well as speak Spanish. For a bit of time the boy was happy...only for the man to disappear one day, never to be seen again.

Deimos was devestated, but had no time to be sad as his caretaker continued to push him in his studies, claiming the boy needed enough knowledge to please the gods. However, when he finished his classes at school, Deimos was actually barred by his guardian from entering the local community college, and now he spends most of his days at home. Sometimes she allows him to leave the house as long as he's at the station on time for her to pick him up, and taking advantage of this small bit of freedom Deimos enjoys his time drawing at the park and other areas of the city.

she had blue skin,
and so did he.
he kept it hid,
and so did she.
they searched for blue
their whole life through,
then passed right by —
and never knew.

- s.s.

There are a lot of little quirks and things that make up Deimos as a whole. Here are just a few.

  • The Monster: Every kid has a childhood night-mare, and Deimos' just happened to be what he was told he would become from a very young age. His caretaker describes The Monster as a large, black being made of shadows, with sharp horns on its head and glowing yellow eyes. The Monster apparently has the ability to curse any Thalassan that dares look at it, put out the fire of Galene's essence and essentially destroy the world in a single second. Deimos believes that soon he will be taken over by this ancient being and he as himself now will cease to exist. This has caused him to have many nightmare, even outside of childhood. They tend to leave the young man shaking as he wakes up in the middle of the night, and his sketchbooks are often full of the creature he sees in this dreams. What he doesn't know is that The Monster isn't real at all, but a figment of his caretaker's beliefs that she has simply passed down to him. What his caretaker doesn't know is that Deimos has started to question this belief.

  • Sebastian de Ureña: Hailing from a Thalassan colony off the coast of spain, this man was an important figure in Deimos' life, and even gave the young man his Spanish name - Damián. The reason his caretaker allowed this man into their home and consequently Deimos' life is only because he was something of a historian, who may or may not have found an old book with writings of ancient Thalassans that followed the same dead religion his caretaker believes in. As she wanted this book for herself, she contacted the man, but had to wait many years for the book to be completely translated. Once that was finished, Sebastian just...disappeared (or so Deimos has been led to believe). It's because of Sebastian that Deimos now draws as well as cooks, both used as ways to stave off boredom at home where he's forced to stay most of the time. This man was also the only one who affectionately called him "mi pequeño Damián."

  • The Mask: Essentially, since the day he was born Deimos was forced to wear a covering over his face. As he grew up, his caretaker would somehow have a mask of bigger size to replace the old one, and the only time he was allowed to have it off was every few weeks when his caretaker would clean his face. As such, Deimos has no idea what his face looks like, since it's always covered by the mask even when he sleeps (hence why he only sleeps on his back). The mask is made of dark, navy blue material that almost looks black, with strange symbols etched around the sides. It covers his entire face, and has a sort of tinted effect over his eyes. He can see the world, but the world can't see him.

  • Home: The house in which Deimos has grown up in can't really be described as a house. It certainly isn't a home either. The entire thing is a one floor building with no winders and only one door. Inside of it there are several rooms, including a living area, a kitchen, a closet, a dining room and three bedrooms (one is used by Deimos, and the other his caretaker). You can imagine the interior as similar to a Terran bunker, again without any windows. If you're ever inside and you looke closely, you'll also realize that there aren't any mirrors.

  • Dead Religion: Originating in a very ancient, Thalassan city in perhaps the farthest corner of the globe this so-called "religion" is one that has believers looking to false gods of chaos and darkness. In order for them to be "properly worshipped" followers must engage in rituals, private ceremonies and sacrifices which are said to increase the follower's power or standing in the world of those who believe in this. Deimos does not know the full extent of the religion his caretaker has taught him, just the basics of The Monster, his supposed destiny (or calling as she likes to say) and a few odd bits and pieces here and there. His caretaker has never done a ritual with or in front of the young man, but that may be soon to change.

personality

basics

Rather soft-spoken and quiet most people don't even remember what his voice sounds like. Deimos keeps to himself as per the instructions of his caretaker, paying careful attention to her warnings. In a public setting the young man keeps his head down, and doesn't try to attract attention. It's inevitable, however, as his mask tends to turn heads. At home Deimos stays inside his room, only venturing into the living area portion when his caretaker is out. There he'll usually sit and watch cartoons. Even when she's gone he doesn't take off his mask. There are days when the young man's wondering gets the best of him - what does he look like? Is it nice to have friends? Where are nice places to go? He shuts down these thoughts as quick as they come, doing his best to avoid temptation. Deimos is very much strung along by his caretaker, doing as she says without question, and never voicing what goes against her teachings. The doubt is starting to get to him, threatening to shake the entire world he's known, but it's going to take something big to push him over the edge。

likes

Citrus flavors, colorful coral reefs, the evening time, watching certain types of children's cartoons, smooth things (like shells, tabletops, etc.), drawing, being in his room。

dislikes

Scary animals (sharks, large rays, etc.), doing the "wrong" thing, doubting what he's been taught to believe, any kind of green vegetable。

hobbies

Drawing (most things around him or what he sees in his dreams), cooking, collecting marine fossils。

fears

Hurting others, being alone, the world beyond the ocean, too much light, the Monster, seeing his own face。

quirks

Whenever he's nervous he tends to play with the fingers on his left hand, almost always has a pencil or pen tucked behind his ear, squints when reading things far away as he needs glasses, ambidextrous (mostly uses his left hand for writing, and the other for drawing or painting), sleeps on his back (never on his sides or stomach)。

bad habits

Forgets to eat quite often since he's been told to only eat at home (since he has to lift his mask slightly), losing himself in his own daydreams to the point where he isn't aware of what's going on around him, touches the back of his head every few minutes to make sure his mask is secure。

wants & desires

To just understand what his caretaker teaches him (what they say is going to happen to him), to be in love and to be loved by somebody, be recognized as an artist and make a living off it。

  • Preferred Gender: Any.
  • Recommended Age: 21+.
  • Occupation: Any.
  • Moral Alignment: Any, good(?).

Surprisingly, although he follows the instructions of his caretaker to a T, Deimos has secretly had an online account for about a year or two now. There he met you, one of the first Terrans he's ever talked to, and now you two have been chatting via this app for those same one or two years. Do you actually consider Deimos a friend, or are you just humoring him? Do you want to meet in person, or are you content with remaining anonymous?

---

  • Availability: Open/Taken.
  • Type of Relationship: Strangers, possible enemies.
  • Species: Thalassan/Terran.
  • Preferred Gender: Male.
  • Recommended Age: 21+.
  • Occupation: Pirate(?), fisherman(?), treasure hunter(?), museum owner(?), anything(?).
  • Moral Alignment: Neutral or Evil.

For quite some time you've been monitoring the city of Galini by use of cameras or other intellgience, set on making a fortune through what you potentially discover. One of those things happens to be a masked boy who you've kept your eye on, thinking him to be somewhat special. Maybe he'll fetch a pretty penny in some less-than-legal market? Do you attempt to kidnap the masked figure, or find out some way to approach him? What are you reasons to trying to make a lot of money in the first place? Why do you assume he's a fortune waiting to be made if you've never seen his face?

---

  • Availability: Open/Taken.
  • Type of Relationship: Strangers.
  • Species: Thalassan/Terran.
  • Preferred Gender: Any.
  • Recommended Age: 20+.
  • Occupation: Store employee.
  • Moral Alignment: Any, good(?), bad(?).

Whenever Deimos is in town he's either shopping with his caretaker, or waiting an hour for her to pick him up from the station. Although he isn't supposed to the young man often walks around the shops, where you happen to work in one of them. You've seen him around for quite sometime, but have never really talked to the masked man before. Are you simply curious in a friendly way, or do you have a darker motive? Perhaps you drag him away from his normal wait spot - on purpose or by accident - and his caretaker is quite cross as he's supposed to be home at a specific time.

---

  • Availability: Open/Taken.
  • Type of Relationship: Past childhood friends.
  • Species: Thalassan/Terran.
  • Preferred Gender: Any.
  • Recommended Age: 22-24.
  • Occupation: Any.
  • Moral Alignment: Neutral(?), good(?).

You and Deimos happened to attend the same school for quite a few years, perhaps even since the both of you were children. While the two of you could have been described as friends in your younger years, the older you got the more you two drifted apart, until eventually you realized it had been years since you'd even spoken the young man. You haven't seen him since graduation, as he doesn't attend the same university you do (or because both of you don't attend university), but happen to stumble across him one day. What do you feel about Deimos now? Is he as weird as people in your school claimed he was, or do you still see him as the quiet boy you played with in the park? Maybe you two can rekindle your childhood friendship.

Scenarios

06

Veiled Visage

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Minor drama, minor angst.

Warnings: Possible language.

2

It was an accident, really. Deimos had been on his way to the station, and the next thing he knew he'd tripped and fallen, his mask cracking cracking and breaking. Immediately he'd started freaking out, not even taking time to pick up the pieces as he dove into a darkened alley to hide. There you find him, huddled in the corner with his arms and hands covering his face. You offer to help, but his first words aren't ones of thanks or harshness - it's "don't look at me!" Do you try to look at his face, or respect his wishes and let him stay hidden? Will you help him get home, or leave him there for someone else to find? Maybe you two get to know each other, in the dark alley no one else seems to want to get close to.

Drawn Daring (Linnaeus)

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Fluff, slice of life, friendship.

Warnings: None.

2

Sometimes, when Deimos has to spend extra time in the city by himself, he'll sit around at the park with a sketchbook, usually drawing trees or animals, and sometimes people. You're often also at the park at the same time, and happen to be one of the faces he draws most. However, what is the young man's reaction when you finally approach, having noticed him the whole time? Are you creeped out or flattered that your face takes up pages and pages of his book? Do you want to ask him to stop, or are you merely curious about who this person is?

Crashing Currents (Atticus)

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Hurt/comfort, slight angst.

Warnings: None(?).

2

One night, when a storm is raging above the surface, Deimos accidentally gets swept up in an underwater current after trying to take a short cut to the station. He blacks out as it carries him through the water, eventually spitting him out near the surface, leading to waves carrying him to shore. There you find him, shivering and unconscious, the boy in the mask. Will you help him, or leave him there for someone else to find? Does he require medical attention? How long has he been on shore - only for a little while, or enough that his nemi has started to crack? If it's soon nearing morning, what will you do to combat the young man's fear of light?

Lying Life.

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Angst, drama, hurt/comfort.

Warnings: Possible heavy topics (questioning beliefs, dealing with trauma, etc.).

2

Deimos has perhaps been getting a little more adventurous lately, even going against the rules of his caretaker in order to walk himself to the Briding Amphitheatre (at night, of course). There he meets you, the first Terran he's ever really met. You're curious about this masked man who you've never seen before, and as such, make an effort to get to know him - even if he does seem to be a bit skittish. The plan is to hopefully have you two become very close friends, to the point where Deimos trusts you enough to start telling you about his own life. Will you try to tell him what's been happening to him is wrong, or will you just let it slide by in the hopes he remains somewhat okay? Do you try to tell him that The Monster isn't real, or just try to comfort him on the matter? *Romantic attraction would also be fun, because I'm a er for this kind of friends-to-lovers and a dash of angst + personal growth interaction, but that's not necessary.

Panicked Patient

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Hurt/comfort, drama.

Warnings: Injury, possible blood / gore.

2

Either you're dangerous, or someone made the wrong people angry. Whatever it is Deimos finds you one evening when he hears something outside the front door of the house, opening it to find you practically on the verge of death. In his panic he brings you inside, and attempts to patch you up in the bathroom before moving you to his room, because if his caretaker finds out he brought a stranger into the house...let's just say she wouldn't be very happy about it. Are you perhaps part of a gang? The mafia? A spy syndicate? Or are you just a simple citizen who had some debts to pay, or stepped on the feet of some very important people? No matter the case you've been gravely hurt, and must spend your time recuperating in this stranger's home. Why does he keep telling you to stay quiet, and never leave the room?.

Stovetop Sighs (Kiara)

1

Availability: Open/Taken.
Species: Thalassan/Terran.

Rating: PG, PG-13, T, or M.

Genres/tags: Fluff, friendship.

Warnings: None.

2

Since cooking is one of his few hobbies that Deimos really enjoys, he's recently made the effort to try and learn how to make Terran-style food. This leads him to secretly taking a cooking class near the shore, where you happen to also be taking the same one (or teaching it). This is where the two of you meet, and you do your best to help the young man as he's really not very familiar with Terran ingredients at all. Hope for you two to become friends, but could go in a different direction. Maybe you guys have outings together? Like going to a Terran grocery store or picking vegetables at your relative's garden (if you have a relative that has a garden).
