Description
Like someone on a hill who tries to make out the people in the valley, i look down at myself from on high, and i'm a hazy and confused landscape, along with everything else.
She was enrolled into a school specializing in traditional music, and young Jieqiong hated almost every second of it. She loved the music, sure, but it was all the rules and regulations came along that made her hate it more. Behaviors and speech were controlled, playtimes and freedom restricted, even hobbies and her relationships with friends were monitored. tons of competitions, additional lessons and classes, never ending tests awaited her and it was all to shape her, grow her potential to be even better than her parents. Her complaints went unheard by her parents, they seemed to think it was building her character, but all it did was make the young girl all the more depressed, even at such a young age. At first, she did her best in everything she could, hopeful that her parents would listen to her if she could put them in a better mood before she talks to them.
When that hadn't worked (her parents had wanted her to do better, to be better in every way), she ultimately decided to flunk all her tests, half-assed all her homework and made big shows of terrorising other students and teachers, be it pranks or teases or jokes that went too far sometimes.
Call it teenage rebellion or simply immaturity, but she thought it was the only thing she could do at that time.
She continued to do the same even until middle school, and it didn't work at first. All it did was making her parents' patience run thinner, and they had been furious and beyond disappointed that she was not only not living up to the family name, but also jeopardising it. So she did the only thing she thought would bring enough impact to make them listen to her for once. Soon-to-be 14-year-old Jieqiong held a knife to her neck, and the thin trail of blood was enough to do the trick.
While she was still busy enjoying her newfound freedom, her parents were busy too. She was the last one in the entire Zhou family to find out that they were taking in another kid. The kid of their family friend who just unfortunately died in a car accident not too long ago. That kid was Jieqiong's age, and everything that Jieqiong was, and even better. Her parents' attention and love, even her friends and teachers' adoration were all taken away by the new kid almost immediately. She was just as pretty, friendly and sweet and with a whole lot of self discipline and self control that Jieqiong lacked. The kid had no musical knowledge nor skill, yet she picked the same string instrument as Jieqiong, and got real good at it in no time due to constant effort. It wasn't hard to see Jieqiong slowly losing everyone's favoritism, even her own parents'.
Now that did not sit right with her. Not at all.
Never would she have expected them to take away her freedom when she was a kid, give it back to her when she begged for it with her own life, and along the process someway start to replace her with someone else more willing, more obedient. Someone else they could control and demand and adore and love. As much as she hated their demands, strictness on her, she knew they still cared about her, paid more than enough attention to her. But with the new kid in the household now, things were quickly changing.
The constant fights that would happen every now and then between Jieqiong and her parents barely happened anymore, and they didn't care as much when she returned home late, or if she failed another test. On purpose or not. Or Even when she did score another test, or win another competition. It was as if their attention was on the new kid only. Jieqiong pretended it did not matter, she reverted to her old ways of being a borderline school bully, seemingly getting along with everyone yet her jokes and pranks to her schoolmates and teachers went a little too far sometimes, her words a little too harsh yet the smile on her face never once faltered. She got mixed with the wrong crowd in no time, and she could have easily been one of their many victims, but Jieqiong had always been calm enough to hold her ground, and she was never a pushover. The kids she now called friends decided they liked her, and she decided she liked their attention. Maybe she was doing everything to get her parents' attention again, or maybe she thought it was the only thing she could do, or maybe she simply liked their company, but she didn't know for sure and it didn't matter. she never got into any real trouble, and she knew it was because she was good and talented enough to keep the teachers tolerating her.
It didn't get her what she wanted, at least not in the way she wanted. Her misdemeanours did not go unnoticed by her parents, yet all they did was send the new kid after her to talk some sense into Jieqiong. It irked her, and she did all she could to drive the kid away, from herself and the family. But she also couldn't deny the similarities between them, both desperate to be good enough. The only difference was Jieqiong wanted everything to be on her terms, but the kid had no problem with going along with anything and everything people wanted. Jieqiong decided to use that to her advantage.
the both of them grew closer, yet their relationship was anything but healthy and mutually beneficial. their entire relationship was based on the new kid trying her best to trying to keep jieqiong on the right track like what her parents wanted, while jieqiong was busy trying to "Corrupt" the kid. she wasn't exactly kind enough to the new kid, and so were her friends. it was almost as if she was doing all she could so the kid would snap, or defy their parents, just like what she did. she saw herself in the kid once upon a time, doing her best and desperate for validation, it was never enough for whatever her parents wanted and expected. while she had chosen more extreme measures, she envied the kid's persistence and determination through it all, the self control and dicipline.
it didn't end well. the kid had been missing for all the classes in school that day, and when jieqiong finally found her, she wasn't expecting her to be crying and standing on the very edge of the school rooftop. what happened next wasn't hard to guess. jieqiong had pushed the kid too far, despite their close bond to each other, and all the stress had finally taken the kid's life.
heartbroken and furious, jieqiong's parents had made the decision to send her to study abroad in america, assuming that a completely new environment was what she needed. their plan did happen, but not in the way they initially planned. jieqiong had been reluctant to leave, and she made a huge fuss even in the car ride to the airport. her parents had wanted her to leave, before anyone could tie the kid's suicide (and also all her past misdemenours) back to her and if they were being honest, it was to prevent the family name from being jeopardized further, and that jieqiong was back to being the only hope of continuing the family legacy. but she was worried that with her being gone, it would just be a matter of time before her parents find someone else to replace her.
that concern did not last long anyway, for the car ride to the airport was cut short when the accident happened. it was a snowy night, and the car had lost control on the frozen road. both her parents died in that car accident. seeing nothing else was left for her in the country, her school friends wary and keeping their distance from her, her parents dead and the one she dared to call her best friend also dead, she moved to America, just like what her parents wished.
seoul is the place where she really starts to get her together, and works harder than she ever did. she is intrigued the idea and dream of being an idol, and an artist, seeing it as another chance for her to finally showcase her best self and earn the love and attention she's always wanted and enjoyed having. shamelessly and rightfully adopting the stage name 'queen' (it started as a nickname given by her friends, half-joking and half-impressed that she seems to excel in everything she does, and her seemingly calm yet attractive and charismastic personality only make her all the more intriguing, just like a queen), she vows to be the best in everything she does, whether if it's on stage or off stage.

while jieqiong is captivating and attractive in her own ways, she is also just as complicated and messed up deep down. she isn't one to honestly express her feelings, she tends to hide her real emotions and feelings more often than not as relationships and expressing herself aren't exactly what she does best.
