Hong Jisoo or better known by his english name Joshua, grew up in the states, learning both korean from his parents to speak at home and american english to speak to the public. His family had moved to the states before joshua was born in hopes to have a better life for their coming baby. However, the states wasn't made out to be everything they had hoped. His father was in and out of jobs every other week, and his mother had became a school teacher, which didn't make that much money. So as a kid joshua wasn't able to do the things most kids did, and he was lucky if he was able to eat dinner with is family every night. 
joshua knew his parents were trying their hardest from him, and now that he looks back at everything he feels guilty that he wasn't as appreciative of them as he should have been. 
When josh was a kid, he had grown a liking to the show criminal minds, and always said that he wanted to do what the people in that show did, and that's exactly what Josh was able to do. 

He got a scholarship, was able to study a year in korea, and ended up liking it there, and found a life for him in korea, and after he gained enough money he helped his parents move back to korea with him. 

Joshua's mother was the one that encouraged him to sign up for the show called married at first sight, as she always told him that working with the nis that he would never find true love, and that this would probably be his only hope. Joshua not wanting to disappoint his mother, signed up for the show, to keep her happy.
