biography

Son of a kabuki actor with a licensed courtesan, Kazuya came in contact with the theatres and the red-light district from a young age. He’d often play by himself while waiting for his parents to go back home, what led him to meet all sorts of unique people. One of the most emblematic acquaintances of his was a friend of his father. He was part of the first generation of ukiyo-e artists, who enjoyed painting the kabuki actors, obsessed by their colorful makeup and extravagant looks.

The man would often wait close to the theater for the actors to finish the play and pose for him, and during that time he and Kazuya would talk to pass the time. As any other person passionate about their work, he would show his designs to the boy, who loved seeing his father and his troupe through the adult’s artistic eyes. It was a matter of time until the child started risking making his own designs, emulating the style and techniques the artist used. He was told that, if he made a creation good enough, the older man would take it to carve it into wood, adding fuel to the fire of his artistic inclinations.

Years went by and Kazuya started walking on his own feet. He wasn’t a kid anymore and started to be aware of the world around him. His parents were hinin, the lowest of the low, mainly his mother who was forced to keep on selling her body because of unending debt. Becoming an artisan was not a hobby anymore, but a way to climb up the social hierarchy and take his family along with him. He started working for rich merchants who were regulars at the red-light district, making commissions for them, mostly picturing their favorite courtesans and geisha.

He started acquiring local fame through his art, being known as Kame. The commissions spread to other societal classes and he was able to save money, hoping to use it to free his mom someday. However, when he was almost done gathering the amount needed, his mother left his father to marry a samurai instead, who was able to clear her debt. She told him to use his earnings to buy a land for himself and not worry about a lost case like her.

His father was devastated and never got up on stage again. Since then, Kame is focused on working, depicting the neighborhood who brought him the memories he treasures the most and also the ones he despises the most, so he can take care of his parent.

personality

kame's source of inspiration has always been the red-light district, and his main muses the courtesans. that added to his carefree personality might give the impression of him being nothing but a bon vivant, but it's a superficial conclusion to make. deep down he's a reliable man who cares about his parents above anything, including his mother who he rarely has the chance to meet. he has some issues trusting women and his own capability of providing for a family, so his romances often last only as much as the initial flame of passion, never escalating to a serious relationship. However, he does have the desire to quiet down one day and build a family of his own.

musing

his work goes through phases, that follow the romantic encounters he's having at the moment. when he falls in love, he depicts the woman of his interest - and often the scenes they have together - almost exclusively. the subjects vary the most during the (scarce) periods he's single and his heart belongs to no one, or when he receives a large amount of commissions at once, as he has to cater to his clients' wants.
