his history

It was that time of the year where winter begins to transition into spring. When the sun finally starts to peak out more, yet the rains come in pours. Flowers start to bud, hoping to bloom into a beautiful flower one day. In a similar fashion, on the day known globally as a day of love, on February 14th, Jung Jaehyun budded into this world to two young parents who adored the baby they brought onto this Earth. Yet, the path for this family of three would end right there on that day. These two parents weren’t just young, they were immature, irresponsible, and just weren’t ready to take on the bearing of raising a child. So Jaehyun was quickly brought to foster care. From there on, he would only live there for a short period of his life. Before he can even recall his earliest memories, he was already living with his new family. It was a little past his first birthday when he was adopted by his family. Though, it would take him out of the country. To the city of Seattle.

In Seattle, Jaehyun grew up being known as J.J. to his peers and family. Jaehyun was a happy and content child as he grew up in a stable family. Along with his new mom and dad, he had an older brother too. And from that early age, Jaehyun knew he was different from his family. Though he was of an entirely different race and ethnicity from his family, it never occurred to him that he was that different from them. After all, he was living with them, so what was the big deal? Though he would go on through the years occasionally being picked about it, it never bothered him. From the time he was a young kid in elementary, he was allowed to do anything he wanted to try. Be it sports, art, martial arts, music, or even those once-a-summer lemonade stands. Out of those activities, music and art were the only ones to stick. It wasn’t like he didn’t like sports, it just didn’t pique his interest as it seemed for the others. Jaehyun especially grew fond of the keyboard and guitar. Along with the guitar, he also loved the ukulele as much. They were both soothing instruments to him, and once he started getting old enough to understand music concepts and theory, he started to compose songs and produce them on his own. Around 8th grade, he started a group collective called 1dyll Sound. 1dyll Sound composed of his internet and in-person friends who all shared a passion to make music. While most sang and rapped, Jaehyun was more of a behind-the-scenes person. At that time, he was self-conscious of his voice and didn’t know how to utilize it. So he took care of the music production, especially since he was the creator of the group.

1dyll Sound would eventually come to dissolve as people got busier with school and jobs, and it left Jaehyun wondering what he wanted to do with his life. At the time, he honestly had no passion for anything but making music, but he didn’t know what he could do that would take his hobby to a career. His guidance counselors recommended going to school for music, but school wasn’t exactly his thing. Not only did he routinely skipped class, but he also had no drive to do well. The funny thing was that Jaehyun could easily do the work if he wanted to. Everyone knew that whenever he did turn in assignments or worked in projects, the dude could easily get a B, and an A if he really tried. In addition, he always did favors and jobs for others, so no one really had any problems with him. So if he just ever wanted to skip, he always had someone to do the work for him in return. It was a mutualism relationship. Jaehyun was also known to throw the biggest parties since his parents would take weekend getaways for their dates, so Jaehyun threw a party once so often. This led to experimentation with smoking pot and drinking before he was legal, but everyone he knew had done it, and if he did it only once in a blue moon, it wouldn’t harm him. One night after one of his parties, he went to a Starbucks to grab a late-night drink. While there, he was approached by two talent scouts of a widely known entertainment company in Korea. They came to him with the idea of inviting him to audition. They were having auditions in Vancouver the previous week before moving them to Seattle. Jaehyun never thought much of being an idol, after all, he wasn’t really all into pop music. But it would be something to do, plus he could go back home. So once he passed a couple of auditions, he packed his bags and made his way to Seoul, saying goodbye to all his friends and family.

Back in Seoul, the 17-year-old Jaehyun accustomed to Korea rather quickly. Being from America, he bonded with other English-speaking trainees from various companies and met people through them. This led to him making music again, and with the training from his company, he started dropping full songs on Soundcloud. A couple of years passed, and the male was gearing up for his debut. Jaehyun had managed to make it into the group before the final lineup was finally announced, but he would, unfortunately, suffer a career-ending injury. During a practice session, he would tear three ligaments in his knee. Though the ligaments could be repaired with surgery, he would be out at least a year and even then would need rehab to get him back to dancing. By then, he would miss out on two calendar years of promotions. So he decided to get the surgery but terminated his contract. Since he didn’t really have the money to travel back to Seattle, nor did he want to go, he decided to stay in Seoul.

The months and years after the operation, Jaehyun fell into his present-day lifestyle of making music by day and partying at night. He started his music group 1dyll Sound again, once again having a platform where he and his friends could work and collaborate on music. Over the years, he would establish himself as a notable indie artist. Though he would never reach mainstream success, he made a name of himself and could live reasonably comfortably. And thanks to a couple of features on songs from shows like SMTM and his lengthy list of royalties from the songs he composed or produced, Jaehyun was living his dream of making music. But achieving this dream at such a young age left him hungrier for more. His desire to get back into the idol industry was mainly with the intention of getting enough connections and respect that he could potentially establish his own company one day. But first, he needed to start small, so he hit up a couple of friends and was able to land a spot on perhaps one of the newest companies to look out for, Diamond Soul Factory.
