temperament: out of his family members, caelius is the calm one. he's quiet, mostly, and doesn't interject himself where his presence isn't warranted, but still has the ability to flip a very dangerous switch when needed. he's got big brother vibes and is fiercely protective of his family but lacks the rash behavior of his mother and his brother. 

chapter i: let's get one thing straight: there's no love lost between caelius yavetz and his father. when caelius was born, he was supposed to be the prodigal son, the heir that xie chao had craved for years. caelius, however, attached himself to his mother, even as a child. he saw xie chao hurt gisela, and grew up seeing his mother in pain and fear. gisela wasn't the only one xie chao hurt.

chapter Ii: caelius hated his father. why do you stay, he asked his mother when he was eleven years old and had just seen gisela have a panic attack over a slammed cabinet door. he asked why gisela let chao hurt him and his mother had shaken his head instead of answering. caelius understood. it was gisela, or him.

chapter iII: you're going to be a big brother! his mother told him when he was sixteen. caelius was excited to have a sibling, but part of him—most of him—loathed the idea of another innocent child having to grow in this household, with that horrible man and all of the abuse their mother went through. but aurelio yavetz was born, tiny and precious and when gisela put him in his arms for the first time caelius knew he had to protect his brother from seeing the same things he did. from experiencing the same things he did.

chapter iV: it all changed on the day xie chao let gisela take their sons out for an early-morning stroll without him. caelius claimed he'd left something behind and returned to the castle they lived in, finding the wooden leg of a chair that he'd painstakingly sharpened just for this. it was a blur after that, nothing but the squelch of blood and flesh in his ears as he drove the stake into xie chao's prone body over and over and over and over and over and over and over—gisela found him jerkily stabbing his father's corpse and pulled him out of the pool of blood and into his arms. "no one will ever know," his mother had promised. "no one will ever know who killed him."

chapter V: it was true. the suspicion landed on gisela, but no one could prove that his mother wasn't innocent. they moved out of italy after some of the suspicion died down, and into a spanish island. aurelio, a toddler, was caelius' responsibility while his mother worked however he could. (caelius isn't sure how old he was when his mother started killing for money.) their lives were rough, but as though by fate, they met uncle haolan. caelius was able to graduate from high school. there was a safe place for the boys to stay while their mother was working. and haolan became the heart of their family, the soft one that they'd all desire to protect. 

trivia:

• after his father's murder, he was questioned by the police and played the grief-stricken son very well. most of their questions were trying to get him to say gisela did it, anyway.

• he has never once felt guilt for what he did to his father. 

• he went to college at the same time as aurelio, and where his brother graduated with a music degree, caelius has a degree in education.
