Although born in New York as the youngest of two girls, there isn't much Samantha remembers of that time. In fact, she doesn't really remember anything from before she was with the agency. She remembers shaking, an earthquake perhaps, the fear in her mind as she watched her older sister be taken from her. She can't remember why, but soon she was grabbed and then began the life of Sonya. "Never tell anyone your real name. You are not American, you are a Russian orphan." This was the mantra she would repeat to herself for years to come, rules she would live by. At the tender age of five, all she knew was that she had been taken to an orphanage with her sister. But the reality was much more gruesome. The "orphanage" was a front and was actually an assassin organization that kidnapped children and young teens to train them to be the best assassins the world has ever seen. And from the age of five, training was all she knew from the moment she woke up to even in her dreams when she was finally allowed to rest.

The one thing Sam was grateful for the most, was that she was one of the few that had siblings in the agency. They believed that family was a liability, a weakness that you could not afford to have in the field. But what they quickly noticed with Sam was that having her sister, Mercutia grey, around actually helped her. She was stronger, more focused, more deadly. Whenever she felt her sister's life was in danger, her powers would surge, and it wouldn't be until she was 10, when she made her first human kill, that she would find out way. She was a part of a species known as mutants, humans born with a gene that gave them extraordinary powers or abilities. The agency wasn't equipped to train her to control her powers, nor did they seem to want to, but they certainly trained her to use them whenever possible.

As her powers grew, her training got more intense, and she found that soon she was able to take down those bigger and stronger than her even without her powers. Her small stature and innocent face used to her advantage. By the time she was 13, she was being sent out into the field. When she would return to the agency, she would immediately be taken to the medical center, where she would give samples of her blood. She had learned very early on not to question them, it never ended well for her. barely a year later, when she was 14, it would be during a now rare moment with her sister that she would learn something new. The agency had kept something from her, a letter claiming her acceptance to a school for people like her. Of course, such a notion was ridiculous to Sam, and it caused a fight between the sisters that revealed even more startling information. Her sister, whom she had always known to be "normal" now had powers of her own.

In that moment, everything changed. They began to plan their escape so they could attend this mysterious school they didn't know much about. It took months and months of careful planning and biding their time. It was the day after she turned 15 that they put their plan into action. Sam would use her growing powers to "lose control" and cause a distraction and her sister would portal them out and away. Of course, things would never be that easy, and Sam really did lose control of her powers. In the midst of all the fighting, Mercutia's powers also went haywire and right when Sam sent a telekinetic blast, suddenly the Grey sisters were in a different dimension. Confused, worried and most of all scared, the two argued once more over what happened. They tried to get Mercutia to portal them out, but nothing she did seemed to work. Neither of them know how long they were in this void, trying to figure out how to get back to their original dimension. Every night, when Sam went to sleep she'd be plagued with dreams of a phoenix.

These dreams would prove to be helpful, for eventually a bright light would come to her and tell her she was a chosen vessel. Not sure what the light meant, when she was told it would help her ad her sister return home, she didn't hesitate to grab it. She was engulfed in light and could feel her powers increase. The energy she created boosted her sister's powers enough for her to try and portal them home, but once again something went wrong. When Sam opened her eyes, she was happy to see that she had somehow made it to the school her and her sister had been trying to get to, but her sister was nowhere in sight. It's been 4 years, and while she hasn't given up hope, a part of her wonders if her sister died trying to send her home. So she works hard as a student at Mystiq Institute, wanting to make her older sister proud, whenever they should meet again.
