BACKGROUND. when haewon thinks back on his childhood, he thinks of the one room house by the sea, the one he spent half his early childhood in with a woman he knew then as mother. he remembers the smell of the sea and her flowery perfume, the way he pinched his fingers hundreds of time from how often he had to clean and oil his bike chain, and the taste of the spicy fish cake stew the neighbors always seemed to have simmering away. had things gone differently, had the police managed to build a stronger case sooner, perhaps he would have stayed in that world the rest of his life and settled in that little fishing village. maybe he would have been married by now and even had a kid or two. but haewon knows the police are incompetent without being spoonfed the evidence, and that's a dual-edged sword in the life of a man like him. that incompetence has saved him countless times the same way it saved his father.

he left the fishing village and his father's mistress before he entered high school closer to the city in mokpo instead. it was his father's will that he enter the family business a short time later at fifteen. he made for a good errand boy, as far as his father was concerned. haewon was carrying envelopes of cash, illegal prescriptions, whatever was easy to hide in his school uniform. unlike the new recruits who ran the streets, haewon knew better than to make a mistake. his father may have had enough mercy only to use his open hand in disciplining him as a young child, but it left a deep enough impression that he knew where those swollen, deep purple bruises and the split lips other couriers sometimes sported came from. he was unlucky enough to do such a good job that he was promoted within the organization.

as a fresh-faced high school graduate, his responsibilities became two-fold. he was permitted to attend college with the understanding that he would study to become a banker, while also serving as a commander under his father's right hand. unfortunately for haewon, the police had begun to close in on the organization and the dissent from within soon saw most of what "family" he had known behind bars or beneath earth. he often prayed that his father had been part of the latter instead, rather than the only mother he had ever known. it was thanks to haewon that as many ended up behind bars as they did, but it did not absolve him of guilt for his role. it's unknown what deal was offered to him to keep him out of prison, but he enlisted soon after becoming witness for the state and wasn't seen home again for years. when he finally did return, a seemingly extensive knowledge of knives, handguns, and even some fluency in russian paints a bloody picture of whatever it is he's hiding.
