BACKGROUND. it takes a village to raise a child, and given the wealth of taehyun's family it certainly seemed as if a small village occupied the home he grew up in. he remembers the nanny who acted as a second mother to him and his sister, the housekeeper who was warm but stern with him about picking up after himself, the gardener who came every thursday and brought sweets for the two scions of the kang family, the cook who made his favorite meals on mondays and his sisters on tuesdays, the family's driver, his and his sister's various tutors, his mother's personal trainer, his father's secretary - all of them familiar faces. despite that fact, taehyun can still look on his mother and father as loving parents, even if ones who had the money to pay others to handle the responsibilities of the house. however, taehyun was rarely indulged much as a child. he grew up with responsibilities and chores as most children do and was given an allowance. according to his father it was so that he would learn the importance of hard work, money, and saving. however, that may be where the similarities ended.

the only son, he was a talented boy and expectations of him were high. from the moment he was born, he was raised to take over his father's place in business in order to maintain the family name and fortune. the only problem that could truly face a chaebol son would be an unwillingness to fit the mold that is shaped for the heir. otherwise, his future was secured from his first breath drawn by his own two lungs. sad, then, that by the time he was a teenager he began to see that his future was not stability and security but rather like the bars of a prison cell. it was small things at first. he thought the teacher at the hagwon was mean, he didn't like how stuffy a necktie felt, he wanted nothing more than to see people smile. but then it became bigger. taehyun had seen the yoke that was placed on his older sister enough in advance that he knew the signs to look for. he knew when the caterers arrived it would come with another wealthy family and their daughter at the table; when the driver arrived early to take him to school, it would be a private talk between him and his father; and when his tutors were dismissed early, it could have been any number of things out of the ordinary but rarely would it be good. and as he knew the signs, he did his best to avoid it. unfortunately, he was on his way to becoming prodigal son rather than the perfect heir. not long after, his father gave him an ultimatum. either he straighten up and follow the guidance he was being given, or he risk squandering his inheritance in favor of freedoms that no one else in this world is ever really promised.

taehyun saw little choice in the matter, but his father extended him a lifeline of sorts. time. borrowed time, of course, but with it came the taste of freedom he wanted. so long as he didn't abandon his studies, he was given his years at university to "find himself." after a year on his own, taehyun is no closer to finding himself and so the worry that he'll never truly know who he is lurks in the back of his mind. for now, among the princes, the servants, the pets and the slaves, taehyun is largely an observer who is more interested in practicing his hand dexterity or his left hook. but perhaps with the right acquaintances he'll come to learn that finding one's self isn't a matter of introspection without experience.
