background
life never goes according to plan and seyoon is a prime example of it. if you asked him what his future would look like when he was a teenager, still full of life and aspiration, he would (cockily) answer he would probably make himself a name to be remembered, and well... he wasn’t wrong.

as a kid, he never stood out, average in every single way. his parents had probably given up on their son ever becoming anything of sort, the fact he was well behaved and did fine at school was enough. when he first picked up boxing as a hobby his parents couldn’t have been any more mortified, they tried to push him off towards a less... intimidating sport, and while seyoon did take a liking to taekwondo and basketball, in the end of the day there was just something about boxing that was calling to him. as years went by the passion was only growing, burning with such intensity even his parents knew it was a lost battle.

he had potential, too, according to his coach, and it was only a matter of time before he was old enough to enter his first national competition and win. it was then that his parents’ skepticism was replaced with pride, and he finally felt like something other than useless. by the time he was finished with school his career as a professional boxer was looking promising. a year from graduation now, his grades weren’t the best but it didn’t matter, because his biggest competition thus far was approaching, the olympics. everything was going well, he never felt so ready for anything in his life, that until hell broke loose. one moment he was shaking hands with his opponent, the next the locker he was leaning on is toppling over and right on the boy.

it didn’t matter what actually went down, the outcome was simple, and the media saw what it wanted. “south’s korea boxer han seyoon reportedly injures opponent, golden medalist alexander cruz, likely to be disqualified.” then it was as if the world turned his back to him, no one believed it was a mistake.

he went from his highest to his lowest in a week, the pride he used to feel going to school now replaced by shame; no one looked at him the same, they pointed fingers and whispered, casted him out. he had never used his fists for wrong, his first teacher's words when he was just 6 still burned in his mind. “never use your fists to fight, only protect.” those were words he lived by, yet no one cared, so why should he? the world punched him square in the face so it was only natural he would strike back twice as hard. the next day at school his bullies got just that, and while he regrets nothing, getting expelled cut his victory short.

shame. disappointment. anger.

even his parents couldn’t bear the weight of it, the taint he had made to their family’s name. he ruined their lives, they said. when he left, they didn’t try to stop him.

there was only one place that welcomed him with open arms, a shady, rich, old man offering him a job he couldn't refuse. to be his little fighting dog in an underground boxing where rich men would bet on him. they knew who he was, laughed in his face whenever he entered the ring and got knocked over. but it was money and if was paying his rent, could he really complain?

personality

+ independent, resilient, hardworking, attentive, genuine, loyal
- competitive, apprehensive, distrusting, socially awkward, introverted, secretive, hot-tempered

despite his appearance screaming trouble, seyoon is quite far from that. in reality, he doesn’t like hurting people, not with his fists and not with his words. the world has been cruel to him so he’s naturally extremely defensive, and untrusting of everyone. his reluctance to socialize might come off as arrogance, like he doesn’t care or thinks himself better than others but he’s really just shy and unsure how to even talk to people.

even when alone, there’s an ansty aura to him, always alert and fully conscious of everything around him. maybe it’s undiagnosed anxiety or maybe he just needs to get the stick out of his . the ansty feeling comes out in the form of anger, random bursts of rage whenever the safe walls he built around himself feels threatened. it’s whiplash from complete composure to yelling and fists in your face in a matter of seconds, a weak attempt of display of power.

it’s been awhile since he last let himself slow down and just live, long forgotten what he’s like when he’s not stressed from simply existing. emotionally constipated they say. if only he was given the chance, maybe the old him, the one who was caring and playful would come back. but for now, it’s easier to pretend there’s no soft spot somewhere deep inside of him, because it’s a weakness.
