John Boddy was the only child of Samuel Boddy and Margaret Black, the sister of financier Sir Hugh Black, of Tudor Mansion, Hampshire. His mother was a peculiar sort, sometimes lavishing her child with attention, and other times distant and withdrawn. His father, a respected reporter, was often away for weeks at a time.

In 1904, when John was eight-years-old, his parents traveled to Egypt for a few months, before mysteriously disappeared without a trace. With no other family to live with, John was sent to live his uncle Hugh at his home in Tudor Mansion. He was sent to boarding school not long after, and during the holidays he spent most of his time with his nanny, the housekeeper and cook of the estate Mrs. Blanche White.

He was educated at one of the finest boarding schools in England and St. Hugh's College, Oxford, where he graduated with a doctoral degree of Anthropology. Around this time, Sir Hugh had passed away suddenly in 1914 while on a fishing trip in Scotland. In his Will, Sir Hugh left the Black family estate as a Trust, in which John would have full ownership on his thirtieth birthday. ((Some of this is changed to fit the story line of the rp story, He did become an Anthropologist, but after Sir Hugh had passed away))

After the Great War ended in 1918, John returned home to Tudor Mansion as his permanent residence. At that time, Boddy had to let go most of Sir Hugh’s extensive domestic staff–with the exception of three long-time employees; the butler Mr. Reginald Ash, housekeeper and cook Mrs. Blanche White, and groundskeeper Russell "Rusty" Nayler.

Over the years, Mr. Boddy became well-acquainted with his uncle's former associates. Shortly after the death of his solicitor Miles Meadow-Brook in 1925, Mr. Boddy discovered a series of allowances going to some of his uncle's associates. Boddy vowed to get to the bottom of these murky financial dealings, and put a stop to it.

On the 5th of June, 1926, Boddy invited some of his uncle's former associates to Tudor Mansion for a small holiday in the countryside, until his thirtieth birthday. Later that evening, Mr. Boddy would be found dead at the bottom of the stairway leading to the cellar.
