by the time the conversation came up again, cormac had become the recipient of a hogwarts letter. due to his academic aptitude his mother allowed him to travel in order to attend, a controversial decision amongst the other families in his village who believed he should have been the one to assume his father's legacy.
the patriarch of the family, cathal mcconnell, allegedly fought alongside fenrir greyback in the second wizarding war in a small allied battalion of werewolves.
cathal self-identified as a death eater and attested to a "high-standing" within their ranks, despite most accounts disputing this due to a range of factors:
+ existing prejudices amongst voldemort's followers that did not allow werewolves to afflict themselves with a dark mark.
+ there was no official record of cathal ever being associated with fenrir in any official capacity, even in leaked documents from the ministry of magic.
cathal mcconnell was killed in 2002 under mysterious circumstances. many people within his close circles believed this to be a ministry conspiracy, while others had attributed it to an argument gone wrong. his family believed that cathal had simply went into hiding - though this too remains unconfirmed.
