lady baek; growing up in s poor family had sumin learning the hard way to be indepenent. her mother died when she was very little, leaving sumin with her alcoholic and abusive father after the death of the mid-age woman. being forced to work for the family, sumin never completed school. she was often teased by others for her low status. she as well had to often take the blame for others because if she wants to survive, she must obey. when the palace released the news of selecting young girls into the palace to be the king's concubine, sumin was selected - whether it was luck or not, sumin hated it. the life in the palace is scary. sumin lives with an uneasy heart everyday, worry that troubles will find her and that she won't be able to keep her head on. choosing to stay in the dark and never get invovle with the palace activities, she hid herself with books.
