Does an emperor concern himself with the needs of others?

 

wenty three year old Huang Zitao. 

ok he's the son of the cheif of guards, but when he was young, he was left alone to wander the palace while his dad sorted out some business, or was on duty just so he wasnt bored (he had no mother, she having passed from illness before his birth), so while exploring, he wandered into the dungeons, the guards thought nothing of his presence as he was only a kid, let him roam and ignored him. Well he wandered, making it to the lower depths where the prisoners who have long term sentences or executions planned, stay. And there's this mage, this sorceror there, imprisoned for years with an execution awaiting him soon, and he sees Zitao and using the dark arts he manages to figure out his name. Now this mage was imprisoned by Zitao's father, arrested and caught and sent to trial etc by his insistence.

The mage realizes the boy is the man's son, and calls him forward towards the prison door. Zitao moves to obey, mainly since A) Hes curious B) Most every other cell is empty or full of unliving corpses And when he does the mage reaches out and casts a spell on Zitao (who's maybe only 5-7). The next day while out on patrol, the cheif ends up losing his life in a market place skirmish that turned deadly. Zitao once again encountered the mage, but this time, the man was free, having escaped his prison. He took Zitao to the marketplace, and told him and showed him about how his father had died, how other guards had fled and abandoned the chief. And seeing the still rather rowdy mob, it angered him and also hurt him--his father was dead and the palace guards had abandoned him in fear.. It turned out the other guards he'd been sent with were new, and thus in fear, fled when things turned sour.

The mage used this opportunity to pick up an apprentice/heir. And took in Zitao and promised him a better future. And so, he learned the Dark Arts. In the process while training him, managed to blur and distort his childhood memories of his father, and thus Zitao believes he had no parents, simply grew with a caretaker that was the mage until he passed away. The mage took care of him well though, and eventually it was the two of them who outdid the previous seawitch Haebyeol.
