long ago, before the very fabric of existence itself was woven, they say that only the gods and goddesses moved about in the empty universe. that was until the goddess of life fell in love with the god of darkness, and later carried his child within her womb. it wasn't long until she birthed their daughter, a bright babe, the goddess named vlatka auryleis. the little girl grew into a powerful goddess who, according to historical teachings, formed the earth with her flesh, blood, and tears. what was made of it became the very earth we live in to this day.

the goddess decided to live in the world she created, and had soon conceived four mortal daughters without a husband. the conception of these daughters was said to be a gift from a goddess who created a world herself beside the earth - this world is what we now call the moon. texts claim she did so to admire and watch over the goddess in the neighboring land; some historical texts even claim that the two goddesses were in love and had claimed each other as their own consorts. the four daughters had been given a blessing each: fire, air, water, and earth.

the goddess created male counterparts as well for her daughters, and the new world slowly grew in population since then. the goddess was addressed since then as mother creator, and the title carried on even until the goddess returned to the heavens to watch over her creation. the descendants of the daughters blessed with fire and air were said to excel in combat and wit, while the ones blessed with earth and water were peacemakers and devoted themselves to divine practices. the ones blessed with fire and air took on the first name of the mother creator, and so did the ones blessed with water and earth her second name. this separation led to the creation of two separate nations, each residing in two separate lands within the earth we live in.

the people called themselves witches, and called their blessed nations "covens". they called their female rulers "matrons" and the male rulers "patrons", and the nations had two of each ruling the witches - one for each of the blessings present in their coven. the two covens lived very differently from one another, vlatka opting for physical strength and intelligence while auryleis favored devotion, purity of the soul, and magic wielding. while both saw females as superior, vlatka was more open to equality among their people while auryleis remained traditional and frowned upon male leaders.

the two covens lived in peace for several centuries, until a fire-blessed woman from the vlatkan nation named laenin became one of the matrons of vlatka. laenin was loved and feared by the people, and had gained tremendous amounts of respect for her deeds - even from the other vlatkan matron dathari. laenin became a threat to auryleis, who feared that she might come and take their land. because of this fear, the aurylean matrons sent the water-blessed wing leader to vlatka disguised as an ambassador to seduce laenin and bring her to her demise. lo and behold, their scheme had worked and the wing leader managed to assassinate both vlatkan matrons. this event was known to vlatka as "laenin beloved's assassination", yet the aurylean witches called it "the fall of laenin vlatka".

having found out the root of the tragedy, the vlatkan witches were furious and demanded a trial by combat. this event was known as "the hallowed witch duel", wherein the fire-blessed vlatkan wing leader battled with the water-blessed wing leader who killed the two matrons. alas, vlatka won the duel, and this enraged the aurylean matrons even further. auryleis launched a surprise attack on vlatka the next morning, marking the first day of the war between the two covens.

the war had been ongoing for nearly five centuries, and till this very day the two nations still have not found peace with each other. many had been killed, lost, and wounded - but neither coven seem to plan on surrendering. given the current state of the witch nations and the root of it all, two centuries-old questions remain unanswered in the midst of this chaos: will vlatka and auryleis ever find peace with each other?

auryleis is the mother creator's second name, and the ancestors of her two daughters gifted with water and earth took on this name to identify themselves and their lineage. some say that auryleis means "life" in the language of the gods, and depicts that after destruction, there will always be new creation. witches in this coven excel in magic and divination. they are deliberate, traditional, devoted and grounded. their witches are blessed with water and earth as their elements, and although most do see battle expertise as important, still they prioritize magic wielding and spirituality over strength. the ruling title is passed through bloodline and the heirs are trained as they grow up by mentors as opposed to choosing, which is the modern way of appointing heirs and is the system that vlatka has opted for.
