The Hall of Maat。

The hall of maat

introduction + situation

Once human life ends, the souls are said to travel into the afterlife. There is a place for everyone, good or evil. But those ordinary souls who did not commit any signifcant crimes but didn't really achieve any greatness that would set them apart, are given a second chance. A chance to clean themselves from any sin or regret that keeps the lost souls from moving onto the next step.

Lost souls are bound with unbreakable shackles, on both legs and arms, that are said to be as heavy as their sins and regret. Restricting them from any type of movement. Upon arrival,  faceless guards, carry them in a seemingly endless stone passageway leading to the Hall of Maat where the final judgment of the dead takes place, a trial to expose the filth and darkness in their hearts.

You are one of those lost souls.

@Judge of Death || Rhadamanthys ◂ I lowered my head finally. I run through the mess that was my life through my head. What was so great about it? Why do I keep lying to myself? All I remember is heart ache, and I never let anyone close to me. What would have happened if I did? Would I have hurt so much? Is it possible someone could have taken that pain away - ? "Yes." I finally murmur. "I would change it, yes."

@Jeon Jeongguk Nodding when he received an answer the judge opened the book in front of him flipping through the pages pausing when he found the name he was looking for. "Jeon Jeongguk. Died at age 21 from a shot to the chest. You were killed when you failed to save a mother and her daughter."

"Your sin is wrath,"

Upon hearing the sin the jury shifted and whispered with mixed opinions on the sin and the situation of the soul in front of them. The judge on the right lifted his hand to silence the whispering setting his heavy gaze on the you instead.

"Even though your sin is wrath you only attacked out of your sense of justice, so, you are not full of sin. The feather of truth has weighed your soul and it has showed that you are not burdened with sin and evil but with regret something else."

Clasping his hands together the judge leaned closer against the table speaking in a low voice.

"I have one question for you. Do you regret it? Do you wish you could have done something differently?"

@Judge of Death || Minos ◂ It was like he was hangover, had the best night of his party and ended up somewhere stranded. But instead of a party, he had another kind of "ensemble" going on. A rather unlucky one. Jeongguk's head pounded in beat with the rhythm of his heart and he lifts a hand to attempt to massage the pain out of his temples.

That he had an headache, is what he found out first, but that he wasn't alone, the second. A voice reverbrated through the halls and it shook his already trembling body. His name. His name was Jeongguk. That is what he can remember. So he obeys the foreign voice in the dark.

"Jeongguk. Jeon Jeongguk is my name."

@Jeon Jeongguk The chamber is dark with torches hanging off the walls illuminating the hieroglyphics that contained the oath of the 42 negative confessions; everything from the floor to the ceiling covered in stone, giving out a cold, heavy yet clean atmosphere. In the center was a large stone table, at the head of it are three chairs that are larger than the rest in the room, two of them taken. Everyone in the room wore dark royal blue cloaks long enough to cover their whole bodies. The flickering fire casting shadows over their features, making them seem like they had no face.

The guards leave the newest soul in the center of the room, the sound of shackles hitting stone echoes loudly, shattering the silence as a chorus of voices rise to take it's place. The large jury, which was spread around the circular room in rows that stook most of the space, take interested in the arrival of a new soul into the Hall, all eyes on the kneeling figure as they speak amongst themselves,.

The sound of something heavy falling against stone has the voices come to a stop. The judge sitting in the middle gracefully searches through the pages of said object. An old looking book. with yellow pages that never seem to end.

"State your name."
He commands directly to the soul in a booming voice, all eyes watching the exchange. You find yourself on your Final judgment of the dead. Don't leave the judge waiting

@Park Chanyeol The hall was filled with chatter, some sounding amused some not very as the jury was already planning a sentence. The judge never takes his eyes from the one standing in front of them. The shackles on his wrists and ankles looking too heavy. He rests against his large seat, this attitude far too familiar to the entire room. Sometimes it was refreshing watching the souls try to stand up for themselves and look brave. He looks to his right, meeting the eyes of the other creature and closes the book.

"It is useless to lie. Not to us, but to yourself. Letting your pride talk for you is more than proof for the jury to come to a conclusion."

The judge extends his hands to the sides, showing you the long audience gathered in the chamber. All of them judging your every word and movement, most of them nodding along to the words.

"All you could have done is gone now, the what ifs and could'ves. The time to hide yourself in your thoughts and heart to fool us like you did with all the people that have tried to help, is over now. "

He passes the heavy book to the figure sitting next to him, facing forward. His voice turning slightly softer.
"Your soul is not burdened with sin or evil, but with regret. You can try with all your might to hide it, but you dwell on what could've been of your life if you have done anything different.
But let me ask you Park Chanyeol. If you get a chance, would you change it? "

Now every eye is back on you. everyone even holding their breath to hear the next answer, most of the people in the multiple rows nodding and pointing, the verdict hanging over your head, waiting to fall.

@Judge of Death || Rhadamanthys ◂ "Regret?" I smirk and put my hands in my jacket pockets. "You make it like I was unhappy." My heart began to race. "I wasn't unhappy. If anything, having people in my life would have made things harder. If I depended on them, there's a chance they would disappoint me, right? I can just take care of things on my own then. Besides, everyone will leave me eventually but I will never leave me. What's there to regret about that?" Why am I kidding myself?

@Park Chanyeol The silence is once more broken as the lone person in the center of the room speaks, the jury talking amongst themselves at such answer, intrigued. The lone slender finger that searched through the pages stops as soon as the name is said. All chatter comes to an end as the judge gently raised a hand, all eyes back on the center.

"Park Chanyeol. Twenty two years old. It's always such a shame young lives come to an end so quickly. And in this way."
The judges glance at each other without saying anything. The dark figure looks at the soul, scrutinizing his behavior. He takes another look at the book with a slight nod.

"According to the book of dead, there aren't many sins you've committed. Yet your soul is full of overwhelming pride. Gluttony, in the form of drugs and alcohol, your life went downhill thanks to this, ending it for you, prematurely. The feather of truth does not lie, you are light as itself yet here you are. You, who didn't accept any help from others around you. Did it feel that great being able to be independent for a change? Did you gain something from treating others around you like they were nothing but rubbish? Living your life like many young people do. These things only lead to death and death alone. You are the proof of these things."

The judge solemnly speaks, the coldness in his voice sharp, the rest of the room in complete silence evaluating the soul's life.

"I only have one question for you. Do you regret it?"
The mood in the chamber changes almost immediately, the thick air clearing up as some murmuring can be heard from the many bodies that sit around the room. Expectant for an answer.

@Do Kyungsoo "Do Kyungsoo, you are here because you have committed a sin that is not bad enough to go hell but you are not good enough to go to heaven as well."

The member of the jury closest to the judge passes a book over who promptly opens it. "These are your sins. You who took no interest in those around you have the sin of pride and sloth. We have judged your soul and according to the feather of truth your soul is not burdened with sin and evil, but with regret. You dwell on what could've been of your poor soul if you have done anything different. If you get a chance, would you change it?"

Closing the book of the dead the judge looked at the jury as they began to confer about what to do. Once they reached an agreement they whispered to the judge about what they wanted to do. "You have to be more socially involved and form relationships with different types of people here. This is your sentence if you do not follow this pact you will lose the last bit of humanity that you have, you'll become a lost soul wandering this place for eternity."

As if on cue the guards came and removed the shackles that were placed on your ankles earlier. The shackles left deep imprints on your skin and the judge gestured towards them to call your attention towards them.

"These imprints are a physical representation on how well you are carrying out your sentence. They fade if you are doing good and darken if you're not. The determined sentence shall start from now until the sins are paid. Now let him dwell with the souls in The Meadows."

The guards reach for you once again and guide you out of the hall to the exit so you can start your new life.

@Do Kyungsoo The room is dark with torches hanging off the wall illuminating the hieroglyphics that contained the oath of the 42 negative confessions, everything from the floor to the ceiling covered in stone, giving out a cold, yet clean atmosphere. In the center was a large round table, at the head of it are three chairs that are larger than the rest. Everyone in the room wore dark royal blue cloaks long enough to cover their whole bodies. The flickering fire casting shadows over their features, making them seem like they had no face.

The guards leave the latest soul in the middle of the room, the sound of shackles hitting stone echoes in the room, shattering the silence as a chorus of voices take it's place. The large jury taking interested in the arrival of a new soul into the Hall, all eyes on the kneeling figure as once again silence takes over.

The sound of something heavy falling against stone has the last scattered voices come to a stop. The judge sitting in the middle gracefully searches through the pages of a heavy looking book. Old, with yellow pages that never seem to end.
