Wang Yibo startled at his doorbell ringing, jerking him out of his daydream slash light sleep. He didn’t even need to say anything when footsteps hurried across the room and Zhi Ruo, his current aide, opened up the door to introduce herself. Right, today was her last day here, it was time to dump him onto some other cheery aide who probably had no clue what to do.

It was a young male, from what he could tell. Oh good. Another nurse who would try to hold his hand, make him ‘see the bright side of life’, tch, yeah right. Yibo scowled, shifting slightly in his armchair, muscle memory leading his right hand to a stray piece of string he liked to pick at when anxiety started creeping in. He could barely hear what the two were talking about, only catching the tail end of what Zhi Ruo was telling the newbie.

“—not quite adjusted yet. Loud noises and not telling him you’re there are his worst triggers; I just usually make sure to say hello if I’m coming into a room he’s in” Zhi Ruos voice filtered through to the lounge,

“How would you feel if you were blind and some stranger decided it was ok to touch you?” Yibo snapped, his picking pausing for a second. There was a moment of awkward silence before Zhi Ruo replied in an equally dry voice “I told you I was there, it’s not my fault you have selective hearing.” Yibo might not like Zhi Ruo all that much but she certainly had a bite to her which was something he could appreciate. Sometimes. The last in-house aide he’d been given was soft; it was no wonder the guy had run off after one two many outbursts on Yibos behalf.

“Ha-ha.” Yibo scoffed, massaging his temples with a grunt. His head was starting to hurt; his sleep last night was more disruptive than usual and a lack of sleep usually ended up with either a headache or a migraine. He was honestly kind of surprised he’d made it until the afternoon without anything going wrong. Go figure it would happen just as his aide swap over was happening. “Zhi Ruo.” He didn’t need to explain what he needed, the tightness in his voice tipping off Zhi Ruo; she hummed in acknowledgement.

“Give me a moment. Headaches happen a lot with him, but please come in, make yourself at home,” there was some shuffling and a door closing, “the living room is through there, he spends most of his time there” Some more noise, footsteps disappearing down the hall and another set, more hesitant, coming into his room. And while Yibo might be in a fairly consistent ty mood, he still had the sense to be at least somewhat polite to a newcomer. Even though his head swum with the movement, Yibo fumbled for his cane, cursing under his breath as he stood up. He made no move to hold out his hand,

“Wang Yibo, it’s.. well, it’s something to meet you. Wish it could have been under better circumstances. Has the VA let you know what you’re getting yourself into?”
