@- ❛ s ❜:laurent devereaux。⁰⁴ The songs in his mind felt like clairvoyance at times, like frosty crystals clinging to a window, the world outside blurry and cold, shrouded in a pall of ignorance. He felt like that, sometimes, as if he was slowly turning to ice the longer he stared at an empty sheet of music, the lines daunting and staring back at him, the single notes on the paper like eyes of black ink, fixating him from inside his own mind. Kaladin knew that it was most likely a problem with his head, the way the songs flickered in and out of existence in his mind, his soul. It was worrying, to say the least, how frustrated he got with the notes that lingered on his tongue, at the tips of his ink-stained fingers. So frustrated, indeed, that he was ready to pull his own hair out at times, working himself to a point where the songs started swimming together, muddled and deformed, fusing into one giant, horrid mess until Kaladin's mind felt as if it was bleeding tunes onto the paper, nothing more. This one, though, had been clear and crisp and clean, both melody and harmony as cold as snowflakes that danced from the gray sky above, like the touch of an alieanated lover. It was haunting, if he was being honest with himself, that melody that sometimes seemed to echo through the hallways as he did his prefect rounds at night, alone with nothing but the song stuck just behind his sternum. Maybe he was finally growing mad with stress, pulling apart like a rubber band, ready to snap in two under the steadily increasing pressure.

He hadn't counted on Laurent sitting down next to him, what with them being faint acquaintances at best. Sure, they shared classes together and were in the same year, but their houses normally didn't mingle much and while Kaladin had always enjoyed Laurent's company and the occasional text message regarding assignments, they rare ever spent time together outside these borders. He was about to comment on it, mouth already opening around a cheeky comment, when he saw the look on the Slytherin's face, all color draining from his usually golden complexion, making Kaladin's eyebrows knit together above his hazel eyes. "Uhm...", he made, suddenly out of things to say, confused at the apparent discomfort the other boy felt at the sound of such a simple, unfinished tune. He shuffled where he sat, fingers tucking nervously at the corner of his sheet music, nearly ripping the thin, already worn paper between the sharp edges of his fingernails. "Just something I've been working on, I guess. Why? I mean" He cast a glance down at the unfinished sheet music, eyes darting back to Laurent's blanched features. "Mate what's with that expression?"
- ❛ s ❜:laurent devereaux。⁰⁴ 3 years ago
@- ❛ ɢ ❜:kaladin ravenwood。⁰⁴ The tune was hauntingly solemn, and it plagued Laurent's dreams. The otherwise joyful and nostalgic happenings of his thoughts would quickly shift; the image of his memories would lose their bright hue. Instead, they were shrouded in a dull, lifeless grey. The sky would become overcast, and the ground would become soaked with sudden rainfall--all within a moment's notice, and as Laurent stared at his mother's face, he would hear that same damned tune as though it was coming from a church organ in the near distance, echoing within his memories and in his eardrums.

Suddenly, everything faded into darkness, and he jolted up in his bed. There were beads of sweat running down his face, and he felt his heart pounding within his chest, as if hoping to jump right out of it. One would think that he would become accustomed to these nightmares, but each one managed to chill him to the core with grim reminders of what he had lost, and perhaps what had yet to come. One constant remained though: the tune. Brushing the nightmare off, he gathered his composure and pulled himself together with his morning routine before heading out. As he entered into the study area, the culmination of bodies furiously scribbling down onto parchment was nothing new. He surveyed the room quickly for another familiar face before his gaze fell upon Kaladin Ravenwood, a Gryffindor of the same year. The pair weren't necessarily close by any means, but they did share a few classes. Shuffling over, Laurent placed his books onto the table and sank down into the chair next to his classmate. However, as the other male continued humming, Laurent froze. His thoughts of exams and the stressors in his life seemingly halted as the tune reverberated in the Slytherin's eardrums. All color faded from his face as he spoke. "What's that...song?"

@- ❛ s ❜:alethi winters。⁰¹ It hurt Henri to see Alehti this sad. He did understand it though, the entire situation was upsetting and figuring out something like the rune being a reason for the death of her birth person? Upsetting. Especially as Alethi's family history did not exactly sound nice or enjoyable. She had grown up with her grandmother who surely was loving but it was still different to growing up with their own parents. Instead her father had chosen a different person to marry. Instead of his own child. It was painful just for Henri to imagine it and surely, Alethi might not realise it, but it was still painful somewhere deep inside, probably.

"Does it look pretty?" Henri asked curiously and tilted his head a bit. Her own crypt. So she had known she would die soon but with Alethi mentioning how sick she had been it was not a surprised. "Yes, of course," he said and gently rubbed her back, a soft smile on his face. "You don't need to. You are my friend so of course I'm helping." He ruffled her hair a bit and then nodded, looking at her. "I get that. I can be with you if you want to ask her about it?" he then offered, knowing how it was to ask family members for information. "We should check the library, definitely," he nodded, wondering if any of his friends knew more about runes. Probably not, sadly.

@- ❛ s ❜:luciel romano。⁰³ ( H ) Most of her days, Reyna was stuck in a routine of going to classes and studying. Nothing exciting happened, nothing out of the line—that had been until Luciel had come along, the only one who managed to shake up her days. All that because he seemed unable to keep himself away from chaos, bad ideas calling him left and right even when Reyna told him all the time that it wasn’t a good idea. But Luciel wasn’t one to be stopped, more so he would return to her side whenever his plans hadn’t quite worked out.

It was one of those days when Reyna was stuck in the study area with a pile of books in front of her nose. Her focus lay on a book about transfiguration, however, she was easily distracted due to it being one of the subjects she wasn’t quite as good at. The distraction was caused by a wizard who had just entered the study area and plopped down some tables in front of her. Even with just seeing his back, she recognized him immediately. A grin tugged at her lips as she watched the scene of a rather befuddled Luciel. As expected, he must have went through with creating that potion.

She rose to her feet as the male got up from the wrong table, their gazes locking before she reached him. “Are you okay?” She questioned even though he clearly wasn’t. Her hand rested on his back to gently guide him over to her table where they had enough distance from other curious students. “I told you this wasn’t a good idea.” She scolded him even though she couldn’t hide the amusement that resonated in her voice. “What did you even want to achieve with this?”

@- ❛ ʜ ❜:henri knight。⁰⁴ At the touch of his fingers against her hand, Alethi let out a slow breath, her free hand hastily brushing away the tears that were threatening to spill over and roll down her cheeks. Why was she even so upset about this? She had never met this woman, had not even met her own father. There was no need for her to cry over this. But looking down at the rune on the paper she felt the same uneasy feeling creeping up on her as she had when she had first stumbled across the crypt, over the statue of her father's first wife so beautiful, frozen in stone.

"I only know that she designed her own crypt", she mutters, gripping his fingers a little tighter between her own, sending him a grateful smile after she was sure that she wouldn't just burst into tears all over again. "Really?"
Her voice sounded awfully relieved and she allowed herself to lean against him, head pressed against his shoulder. "You're the best, Henri, have I ever told you?", she muttered, shutting the book a little bit more forceful than necessary, wincing at the loud sound. It didn't draw a lot of attention, most people who had looked up from their own studies quickly losing interest. "I think I need to ask my Nan about it, you know? But I'm kind of scared to do that. Or do you think... do you think we should go check the library? If there's more information on this rune? I'm no expert with these..."

@- ❛ ʀ ❜:reyna corvin。⁰⁴ You would think that the amount of times Luciel has put himself in harms way, he'd learn from his mistakes. Was what he did dangerous? Yes. Did he care? Not particularly.

In fact, he had been warned about the consequences days prior by his close friend, Reyna. Just as the name indicates, the Befuddlement Draught potion was one that caused an unbelievable amount of discombobulation for whoever drank it. If that wasn't enough as is, the confusion was also likely to be followed my incautious behaviors, as if he wasn't already reckless enough without the potion. So now, as he sauntered into the study area he knew Reyna would be located (he guessed and hoped), he couldn't help his brain that seemingly was swarmed with a million useless thoughts and questions. Was he always like this? No. Maybe. Whatever. It was beginning to grow annoying.

"You were right," he plopped dramatically into the seat beside her, head dangling off her shoulder in an attempt to hide his bruised face. "Or wait, am I asking the right person?" Questioning himself out loud, he lifted his head again to gaze at the person he sat beside, questioning for a second or two if it was actually Reyna. It wasn't.

"Oh , sorry," he quickly fumbled to his feet and glanced around, finally spotting the female many tables behind the one he was currently at.

@- ❛ s ❜:alethi winters。⁰¹ Slowly Henri nodded when he listened to Alethi’s words, trusting her when she said her grandmother would never lie to her. And she was probably right as the other was smart, very smart, and Henri would never doubt that. Alethi knew how to get what she wanted and Henri was sure of it. “Okay, so at least we know whatever your grandmother told you. But did she know about this rune?” he asked and pointed to it, quiet words leaving his lips. He just hoped the answer was no. That Alethi’s Nan had no idea about this rune because, clearly, it meant nothing good and he’d rather have Alethi’s grandmother have nothing to do with it than anything else.

“Oh,” he mumbled when he heard that she had never met him – he was not sure if it was good or bad so he just nodded slightly, hoping it was okay. “So she did that to herself?” Now that was weird. Why would anyone do this to themselves? He looked around, hoping no one was listening to them before he nodded. “I’m pretty sure there is more about it. And it doesn’t mean anything good,” he said and frowned, looking at her and frowning when Henri noticed the tears. “We’ll figure out what’s going on,” he said and gently took her hand in his. “We will, I am sure.” Because he hated seeing his friend like this and he just really wanted to try his best and support her. Even if it meant getting into some reckless trouble – but they deserved an answer. Alethi deserved an answer.

@- ❛ s ❜:laurent devereaux。⁰⁴ The castle was blanketed in a thick layer of silence, settling over the towers and every roof like the snow that had started to fall, as if wrapping the school into the folds of time itself, holding every sound and every movement hostage. He had finished his first exam, grumpy and sleep deprived as he was, his body aching for a full night of well deserved rest and while he knew he could be taking a nap right now, he instead chose to seek out a nearly deserted study area, only a few students scattered across the room, busy squeezing in a couple more moments of last minute studying. They had been given assignments despite their exams, the list he had written for himself glaring up at him when he pulled a stack of papers from his satchel, hastily stuffing the parchment back into the darkness of blissful oblivion as the rest of them landed in a disarranged pile on the table he had chosen. It was nothing, really, a pile of garbage. A pile of garbage refusing to let him sleep, the melody he had scribbled out the night before nothing but a cluster of notes without rhyme or reason, thrown onto the paper just to be rid of them.

It hadn't worked. After he had been woken up once, there had been no going back. His mind had been busy, having him tossing and turning and waking up every other hour until his muscles and soul were sore with bruises and the nagging melody that had crawled into his brain, making a home there for itself. It stung, felt like a foreign body of its own and Kaladin groaned, letting his head fall forward into his arms, humming softly to himself. Nobody cared and he knew, the clutch exams had on the castle and student body too tight for that soft melody of his to make a difference. It would never be able to pierce the blanket of anxiety and stress that was wrapped around them all. It wasn't loud, the tune too soft and melancholy to ever reach a higher volume and while he went, his fingers were moving on the table, fingers pressing imaginary keys atop the parchment he had scribbled on. His eyes traveled over the room, over the hunched backs of people he knew and had seemingly never seen before, until he saw a familiar figure, lifting his hand a a little in a silent wave towards Laurent, a smile playing around the corners of his lips, his humming never ceasing.

@- ❛ ʜ ❜:henri knight。⁰⁴ "My Nan did", Alethi answered his question, visibly bristling at the thought her grandmother would ever lie to her. Coraline Winters was many things, but she had been brutally honest with her granddaughter from the very start. There was no use in lying to the girl, Alethi could often hear her grandmother arguing with her grandfather. And she had been right, even though it had given her the worst nightmares a child could ever have. There was no use in lying, if Alethi was smart enough to find out the truth herself, sooner or later. The impact of the knowledge would have been far greater, far more devastating for her if Coraline would have lied to her about the fate of her parents. Losing Sorrel Winters had left traces around the house, after all. "She'd never lie to me", she finished softly, tracing the rune in the book with the fingernail of her index. "I trust her when she says my... step mum? I don't know what she is for me..." Trailing off, Alethi cleared , leaning back on the bench to study her friend for a couple heartbeats, falling silent.

"I... don't know", she confessed, reaching out to place her hand on his elbow, squeezing gently. Knowing your parents married for blood and nothing else must be hard, she imagined. "I never met him. So..." Trailing off she bit her lower lip, gaze once more drawn to the book between them. "My Nan said that my father's first wife designed her crypt herself." A pause, dragging and grating on her fraying mind. "Do you think there might be something in the forbidden section in the library? This book doesn't say anything about it. I'm getting a really bad feeling about this, you know? Something... something is wrong about this. I've always wondered... why my father..." Tears were choking her voice by now, her fingers white where they were gripping her skirt so tightly.
- ❛ ʜ ❜:henri knight。⁰⁴ 3 years ago
@- ❛ s ❜:alethi winters。⁰¹ “I… you might be right with that.” Minho chuckled amused and looked at the other, tilting his head a little bit. “Maybe chaos vibes. Who knows.” He hummed softly while he watched the book, looking to Alethi from time to time. He was yet not entirely sure what to think about it. “Was she?” He frowned a bit and nodded then. ”Or is that just what people are saying?” After all people loved to lie, to make up stories to get their way and make people think it was the truth. He watched the rule, drawing it with his fingers to remember what it was, to remember the text next to it. It was a bad sign, a bad omen definitely. “Who said she was sick?”

Nodding slightly Henri listened to Alethi’s words, humming slightly. “Why did they marry then?” He frowned a bit, still aware that some people married because of lineage and other reasons, money and blood was mostly a reason next to love. He then sighed. “It’s fine, I’m not getting you wrong. My parents married because of blood and fame so…” He shrugged slightly. They did love each other but they had not done that in the beginning so there was that. “It definitely might have something to do with it.” But how were they supposed to figure that out? He nodded towards Alethi. “Do you think he just… wanted her dead?”
- ❛ s ❜:alethi winters。⁰¹ 3 years ago
@- ❛ ʜ ❜:henri knight。⁰⁴ "Death vibes", she snorted, giving him a pointed look with her eyebrows raised. "You're the last person on this planet to ever give off death vibes, Henri." With a small sigh she turned back to the book, pushing it in between them so he could take a better look at what she had found. Scooting closer towards him so she was able to lower her voice, she cast a quick glance around to make sure they weren't disturbing anybody else. "No I... she was really sick from birth", Alethi whispered, shaking her head and then letting out an annoyed sigh at the length of her hair dragging yet again through the ink on her paper. Leaning back, she gathered her hair to twist it into a knot on her head, securing it with her wand while she was speaking.

"She came from a very long line of pure bloods and I think they had some issues with weak children or something. I don't know... I don't know much about her... She wasn't my mom after all." The topic bothered her, pulling down into a frown. "My Nan told me that my father married her when they were still really young. They met here at Hogwarts apparently and she was madly in love with him. But..." She bit her bottom lip, casting him a worried glance. "Don't get me wrong ok? From what my Nan told me? My father wasn't even that in love with her. And... and I think this symbol might have something to do with him... you know?" She made a gesture with her hand, dragging her thumb over her own throat in a symbolic gesture, tongue peeking out the corner of . "You get it?"

@- ❛ s ❜:alethi winters。⁰¹ “I don’t know, either it is me giving up death vibes or I am just very good with supporting you in your worst times,” Henri said, grinning at his friend. He shook his head amused while he wrote something on the parchment and chuckled amused. Well, it surely was a you problem but at least he was not in it alone. “But I am grateful we are not alone.” He hummed and gently patted her knee in a calming manner, trying to make sure she did not hurt herself. After all it would not be a surprise. They had been sitting here for so long, even Henri’s legs were slowly falling asleep. The amount of homework and assignments they had gotten was way too much.

Henri was looking through the books, sighing slightly. He was pretty sure his brain could not hold any more information now as it felt like it was just either exploding or shrinking together like it refused to eventually take in anything new. He was about to nap off when he heard Alethi suddenly gasped and he looked confused at her, frowning a but when she suddenly pointed at a rune and he tilted his head, remembering that was definitely not a good one. It meant a lot of harm. “Yeah, I remember,” he nodded and looked at her and then back at the book. “It’s… it’s on her coffin?” Now that was an utterly horrifying thing. “Wait. Does that mean someone… someone forced her death? Runed her death kind of?” He knew too little about runes but that was terrifying.

@- ❛ ʜ ❜:henri knight。⁰⁴ She should have been a Ravenclaw, Alethi thought with a miserable frown on her face, a sigh ripped from when she tipped her head back towards the ceiling. Her thoughts were swimming out of her consciousness, her brain feeling as if it would drip out of her ears any second now. "Ok why is it you're always with me when I feel like I want to die?" Her words were nothing but a breath, hear upper body tipping to the side to whisper in Henri's ear, her friend once again by her side, slaving over endless lists of assignments by their teachers. "I'm starting to think that's a you problem, not a me problem", she joked, kicking her legs out underneath the table, barely avoiding hitting her knees into the table. Wincing, Alethi reached behind herself, quickly gathering her head to twist it into a messy bun atop her head, her long locks already stained with the ink still drying on her latest homework.

Ancient runes was next and even though she'd rather be outside - taking a walk by the lake or even the god damn forest sounded so lovely right now, she'd give an arm to be able to leave - she knew she needed to finish this. If she didn't it would come back to bite her and she wasn't all too keen on receiving a howler from her Nana any time soon for failing a test or, Merlin help her, an entire class. Flipping through the giant book she had open - without reading a single sentence in the past thirty minutes she had tried to fix her Transfiguration homework - her entire body jolted. "Merlin's beard!", she gasped out, slamming a hand down on the page she had accidentally opened, earning herself some angry stares and a collective hissing noise from the other students.
"Henri", Alethi whispered, ducking her head as the only form of apology for her outburst, turning the book so the Hufflepuff could see the rune painted carefully onto the page. "Do you... do you remember what I told you about my father's first wife and this /really/ creepy crypt their buried her in? This!" She pointed at the book repeatedly, nearly bending her finger the wrong way from the force she was using to stab the book. "This is the rune that's on her coffin!"

"Good work, guys!" Hanami's guinea pig starts chippering the dried sticky web on her hand and wand as Everett runs towards Hanami and broke her free from the bound of web. They passed by the petrified giant spider before they ran to the others once the petrifying spell starts to wear off of the acromantula. She sees Emilia had some injuries in her foot, Hanami walked towards her and sees that it is a deep wound from the bombing spell. "I can fix this, hold still." She points her want to her foot before chanting a healing charm that only takes a few seconds for the wound to close. "I can't guarantee that it is completely heal, it's best for you to get medications from Madam Pomfrey after this, okay?." "thank you, eve. this pesky creature," he mumbled and massaged his wrist, it was difficult to think with all the commotion - not to mention shards of glass were now pretty much everywhere. he pushed some away with his foot, trying to get them in a circle while the creature was immobilised. "can you just take a beauty nap? trust me, you need it," he egged the spider on, and moved back slowly until it was where he wanted it to be. "guys, now would be a good moment. hit the shard under it!" he really hoped it would work. all shards were arranged in a weird circle, so if the spell moves, it should hit the other shards and create a sphere. should - but it was all just a theory. She had no idea what to do next, other than to search for her missing shoe and stare at the now, web-coverded Hanami. Thus, she nodded along to what the Ravenclaw had suggested, though having her doubts due to how large this thing was. She took cover as asked of her and darted to the floor to grab a shard of glass, knocking her fingers in the process. "Ouch, ouch," she continued in pain. At this point, the spider had Mael as a hostage. "Mael! Oh no, oh no." With no other thought, Emilia through the shard of glass, trying to aim for its eye, missing quite horribly before raising her wand. The thing spat a ball of what looked like a web at Emilia, catching her wand hand. "Ew, ew, ew!" She exclaimed at the wet substance, wiping it on her robes. It had definitely spat its venom at her, which certainly was not good for the first-year. Thankfully, it hadn't ruined her wand. "Petrificus Totalus!" The spell hit the creature, once more, causing it to become still like a statue. She ran over to Mael, now with a new glass shard to help him release his hand from the spider's grip. "we have to corner it. we have more chances to be in power if we have it in one place," he kept thinking about that mirror, with the right math they could make it work - even if it was all circumstantial. he took his wand and pointed it at the mirror. "take cover! if I break it, we can surround the spider with its pieces. it would concentrate the spell," mal took a step back, and felt hairy legs against his leg. he got the chance to shout 'bombarda' and hit the mirror, but the spider trapped him as well, making a small passageway between him and hanami. "this bloody ugly creature is smart! and quick too," his hand was restrained, and he tried his best to free it but failed nevertheless.

She heard them mention a mirror, however she had learned from a bad mistake in the past that not only will it make the spell bounce wherever, no guarantees of it hitting their target, but that it will break and cause shards to hit her. She quietly crouched down to pick up her nearly forgotten wand, pointing it at the creature with such determination. "Arania Exumai!" The spell was extremely successful, throwing the creature fall in the study hall until it was slammed into a wall. "Ah?! Ahah?! HAHAHA I DID IT I DID IT." It was the first time the Gryffindor had done anything successfully regarding spells on the first try.

"you do need a make-over," he made a face, and unsuccessfully threw his big book at the spider. he did not really expect it to work. the spider looked angered by the multiple blasts it got. he looked at his other peers, and searched for a solution. "hanami is right, we would have to cast the spell together," he agreed, and got out of the spider's way, only to bump into erasmus. "does it matter why it is here?" he looked around, and spotted a big mirror near emilia. "how about we make the spell get bigger? would it get reflected off the mirror?" he looked at the hufflepuff, but unfortunately he was out of his reach. "I think the spider has a liking for eve, guys. we have to hurry!"
