Hello, my name is Caroline Altamirano-Syler, my family and friends call me Chu. I've been in the AVID program for 5 years now. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The program is an elective class that one takes the entire year and ever year until they graduate from High School. This program teaches students how to properly prepare for college for children who are from families where their parents have never been to college, often lower income, often they will the first to graduate college from their family, and the students often haven average range grades before entering the program (C's). Every school year, AVID has the ability to take each class on two field trips to Colleges and Universities around the state. The field trips are a guide line for helping the students choose the type of College they wish to enter and that will fit their needs. They have the ability to learn in depth about the Colleges they visit and how to apply even from a young age. Junior year is the most critical year for visiting colleges, by Senior year its getting to late. The school district is no longer willing to help fund the field-trips and hardly even the program. This program is a dear part of my life and has been since the seventh grade and I am now a junior (11th grade). Every AVID class at my suburban small-time town high school is participating in a unique fundraiser, a type that our AVID program has never done before.
I'm not telling you to "give me your money", I'm asking you if you can help support my AVID family by taking the time to look over what I'm about to tell you. Please. This program means the world to me, its my AVID Ohana (family).
