Kangjoon's life was all forced smiles and hidden tears until Taemin arrived. It was weird, how Taemin could change his life so quickly and so powerfully all the same. At first, he was convinced it was just a fantasy, something that would end as quickly as it started, but the more that he saw Taemin, the more he fell. They met as teenagers, still in high school and learning what puberty was. Kangjoon realized it then, that Taemin meant so much more to him than just another classmate. But Taemin was popular, the kind of popular everyone attempts to stay away from. It was a surprise that they were even friends at all. Maybe it was because Taemin had seen him cry one day when he failed a test and did nothing but wait with him until he stopped. Ever since then, they had been inseparable. Years have passed, and if anything's changed, it's Kangjoon's feelings, now strong enough for him to feel like he's incomplete without Taemin by his side officially. Taemin's straight, he assumes, considering he hasn't said or done anything to prove otherwise, but Kangjoon is tired of waiting. They're outside of the school, Kangjoon had dragged Taemin off as soon as he noticed the latter, and Taemin had only followed him with his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He asked a lot of questions, but Kangjoon didn't have any answers for them. Kangjoon could only spill his heart out and hope Taemin accepted him. And he did, you better believe that he did. As soon as those three words of "I love you" escaped Kangjoon's lips, Taemin had kissed him, and uttered the same three words. No longer did Kangjoon have to live a life of forced smiles and hidden tears.

Taemin's gone, that's the first thing he hears when he gets home from work. Kangjoon's world stops spinning abruptly. Taemin's been fighting in the war for the past six months, and after a week of static from his partner, he's suddenly disappeared? Kangjoon fears the worst. He's so damn terrified that he just drops himself to the ground in front of their door, curls up, and sobs into his knees. His parents can't shake him out of it, they don't even try to. They all warned him about loving someone who fought in wars. He should have known, should have listened. But Kangjoon loved Taemin, more than he loved anyone before. If he didn't trust Taemin to come home, he wouldn't have accepted Taemin all those years back. He sobs, and sobs, and sobs some more. He can't do much else, not when there's no one telling him Taemin's going to be okay. There's not even that final blow of someone coming over and telling them Taemin's passed away. He's just... gone. With no trace. Days later, Kangjoon learns that Taemin was abducted and held for torturing, along with several other soldiers in his platoon. Kangjoon's heart breaks. He would rather Taemin die than have to go through all of that alone, but he prays, prays that he can have Taemin back, at least for another day. At least to tell him he loves him one last time. It takes another six months, but Taemin is rescued, He's scarred, and the horrors of war follow him, but he's alive and he's in Kangjoon's arms. Kangjoon, who hadn't gone to work in six months until he was sure that Taemin would come back to him, dead or alive. Taemin would need years to heal, but so long as Kangjoon is there, he'll heal just fine.
