Background:

Stephanie Claire Johnson was born sometime in the early 1925 in U.S.A, fourteen years before the World War II started in 1939. She and her mother, Clary Johnson, had a hard time settling down and had to relocate multiple times a year. Her mother kept repeating the same lines over the years to her like a mantra, “She’d learn to love you, darling. You are an amazing girl, she doesn’t see that now, but she will. You will bring change to the world someday.” She didn’t understand what it meant or why they had to move away and jump from places to places, but she didn’t bother to ask her mother why. They weren’t rich, but sometimes when she’d wake up, she’d have this diamonds and gems beside her. She would hand them to her mother, and she’d tell Claire that it is a gift from her father. But not once, did she ever saw her father. Not even his shadow, none.

At age twelve, she saw things she didn’t thought was possible. Random creatures with multiple eyes, scaly skin, and even some with wings and sharp teeth appeared out of nowhere. But the thing is, they tend to keep a safe distance from her but it did not take away the fact that they were staring at her like she was some food they desperately wanted to devour.

When the WWII began, Claire and her mother saw the opportunity to start anew in Japan; they sneaked in to one of Japan’s war ship and hid themselves as best as they could manage. It was reckless and dangerous, but it was their only chance. They were so desperate to get away from the monsters and the unfortunate things they experienced. But even after successfully getting onto the ship, their travel wasn’t easy, they had to stay alert, they lacked sleep, and they did not have any food or water. Her mother became sick, from fatigue, stress and hunger. Calire would sneak in the upper deck to look for left over food and water for her and her mother, but she usually gave her share for her mother.

The war ship finally arrived in Hiroshima; there they tried to seek refuge. But the Japanese people saw them as a threat and thought that they were spies from the enemy base. They fled and headed to the mountains, where they met Kenichi Abe, a retired soldier. He took them in, treated them like his own family. Kenichi taught Claire to speak in Japanese and trained her in combat, using any kind of weapon - but she was always admired the Katana that was sealed in a case inside the mini hut - their refuge, their home. It felt good to have a home, not having to run and jump from one place to another because everything in Claire’s life had always been temporary.

For almost three years, Claire got better, stronger. But her mother was getting worse; of course she got over her fatigue and hunger. But the stress never left, it got worse, she was losing it. Ever since they arrived in Japan, she became distant; she kept mumbling inaudible words that Claire couldn’t understand. She only heard pieces of words she couldn’t connect, like “death” and “persomething” it was some sort of puzzle pieces with no images, only darkness.
One day, as she was going down the mountain to sneak onto the town for supplies, she sensed as if someone had passed away – a soul, leaving his earthly body. Oddly, a sense of familiarity rushed to her – Kenichi. She stood frozen on her spot. How could she tell it was Kenichi? Suddenly a wind- no. A spirit, flew past her, whispering, “Clary. Danger” Kenichi’s native Japanese accent told her; there he was, standing in front of her – his spirit. Pointing to the direction from which she came from, the direction leading to their mini hut. She ran as fast as she could and blink away the tears that were forming but it was too late, her vision was a blur.

She was too late. What she felt about a spirit leaving his body, it was true. There he was, lying on the floor his eyes wide open, he wasn’t breathing. And there’s a big hole on his chest. Calire wasnted toThe hut was a mess; she looked around, searching for her mom. “Mom?” she called out, no response. She attempted once more, still, none. And another, and another, but in the end, not a single voice was heard. She didn’t waste any second she ran towards the door when something shiny caught her eye – the Katana. But it looked different, like a different metal. But it was still the same Katana that Kenichi owned. She hesitated for a moment, but took it anyways.

She had to save her mom. She ran through the forest, calling out her mother’s name. After what seemed like forever, there she was staring blankly into the vast space. Suddenly, a creature appeared from the dark shadows. He was at least 10 feet tall, with one eye? She couldn’t see clearly. But it was hard to miss that he was holding a spear, not just any normal spear – a huge spear. He held it up, ready to throw. “Oh no” She thought, not her mom. She threw her Katana at the direction of the Cyclops and ran towards into the direction of her mom. Good thing she was fast enough to get between her mom and the Cyclops before he released his spear. She turned to look at her mom, she was unharmed. ‘Good’, she thought. And back to the monster – its remains turned to nothing. Kenichi’s Katana was already on the floor. Just then, her vision became blurry, pain surged throughout her whole body, followed by a piercing scream and then there was only darkness.

The next thing she knew, she was lying on a bed with extreme headache. She remembered being in a cave, and there was a figure of a woman that was glowing like a light that is guiding her towards something and a guy with wait- were those goat legs? Maybe it was just her headache that is making her think of the impossible – or was it really impossible? She fought numerous monsters, and a guy with goat legs seems impossible to her?
She got up, unaware of where she was. Surprisingly, Kenichi’s Katana was there by the table across the cabin. She grabbed it, inhaled deeply before opening the door – and a whole new world welcomed her.
