He is a creation, a result of secret experiments by S.T.A.R. Labs, the Metropolis branch. He is a clone of Superman, carrying similar genetics but not exact DNA, as his own DNA was tampered with but also due to the fact that he was an experiment in the middle of the lab's trial and error period for the process which birthed him. He was thought to have been a failed experiment until he escaped when they tried to terminate him. He didn't have a name and just went along with being considered an orphan, simply another John Doe is the systems. Hearing "John Doe" used quite often when referring to him, he's taken on the name "Jay." He's taken small measures to not look like the hero he was quite literally born from, such as growing out his hair and moving to Gotham City. He has the strength and speed of Superman, powers that even scientists and researchers back in Metropolis didn't discover until he escaped. It's unknown, even to him, as to whether or not he harbors any other abilities, let alone weaknesses.
Now that he's moved to Gotham, he still keeps a very low profile. He's still pretty new to the city with him only having been around for about six months but he's managed to find a small apartment to call home. He's also managed to find work as an assistant coach for three little league sports: Soccer, American Football, and Baseball. It was thought of to be weird that he didn't have much of a background when they did the background check but he simply explained that he was an orphan from another city, never having a family and never being taken in by anyone, even an orphanage.
As far as personality goes, he's a man of few words and presently has no friends. He trusts no one and simply feels as though someone is always out to get him - namely to return him back to the lab from which he escaped. He plays fair but is also known to do whatever it takes to get people to leave him alone. He's not gullible but he can be thought of as someone that aims to please. He's not usually seen getting upset or being disappointed, usually not showing much emotion at all really. He does tend to smile pretty easily though when he's thoroughly enjoying something, such as when he's working with the kids in his Little League teams.
