her past was nothing exciting and was nothing but simple. she was always close to her mother and, though she would see her father and was aware there was something important that he was hiding from her and her mother, she never asked him questions about it. as far as she knew, they were nothing more than a happy family just going about life like everyone else.
after turning fifteen, she was allowed to hang out with her friends a lot more without supervision. that's when she met him. there was just something that connected. he had long hair that curled as if he'd just stepped out of the pool and always smelled of saltwater, as though he never left the beach. a friend of her friends, it was hard not to run into him and she eventually gave in to his vibe and his accent. vito became her partner in crime and they never left one another's sides.
things went downhill not too long after they had both turned sixteen. he came to her covered in bruises and scars and he looked like he'd been fighting tears only to have them all spill over the second they saw each other. she held him and didn't ask any questions, tending to his wounds once he'd calmed down. before sunrise the next morning, they'd given their ities to one another.
two years later, it was just another day when vito was over her house after school, they were working on homework when her father came home, apparently in a drunken rage. the two of them learned something that she was completely lost on. one thing led to another and her father made an attempt to hit her, only for vito to hit him first. his words are what struck her: "i won't let you hurt her like i let you hurt me." she wasn't sure how they knew each other and she knew it wasn't a time to ask as her father was simply more enraged. in the midst of trying to get kiana out of the house, vito was stabbed by her father; she took the same broken bottle and didn't even think twice about stabbing the older man before running away with vito.
where they stand now is simply that she's yet to ask how her best friend and her father knew each other, and to the point that he abused vito, but even after three years, she's scared to ask. some days it eats her u while other days she's just glad that they're free. they've yet to go back to either of their homes but they know they'll have to face the music sooner or later and she'll be glad to as long as she has vito by her side.
