Biography
Jieqiong certainly did not have it easy in her life. Ever since she was little, she learnt that everything comes with a price, even happiness. No matter what. Ever since she was still young, she wasn’t exactly fond of this world. Her resentment and hatred towards the world deepens significantly as she grows older.
She was the only child, born into an average family in an average city in China. Before all that resentment and hatred grew in her heart, little Jie was your ordinary kid, who actually enjoyed going to school to meet up with friends, who liked to stay up late to watch Disney movies, who liked donuts and her favourite musical instrument pipa more than anything else in the world. She had begged her father to let her learn ever since she was 6, and he had finally agreed to let her learn once she entered elementary school. Little Jie was nothing but talented at pipa, having won several national-level tournaments. Her elementary and early middle school life had been a blissful journey, she was doing the one thing she loved and at one point, her dream was to actually make it into the national pipa team, proudly representing the country for performance and tournaments. Her parents were proud of her, or that was what she thought.
By the time she was in her first year of middle school, everything went wrong, one after another. That year, she was 13, still your fresh middle school student who decided to skip afternoon revisions sessions so she could go home early to practice for her pipa competition that was set to be taking place in the same week. It would be her 5th national tournament, and if she played the opportunity well and won the competition, she would be in the junior national team in no time. Until now, she still wonders why she had chosen that particular day to go home early. If she hadn’t, maybe everything would be perfect, just like the way it was supposed to. That day, she had walked in on her father in the midst of an affair with another woman whom she would soon learn it was her mother’s best friend. Apparently her father had skipped work just so he could have the whole day with his mistress, and he apparently hadn’t been expecting Jie to go home early either. Horrified by what she saw, Jie did the one thing that she had thought reasonable at that time. She ran, and moments later, she was on the phone with her mother, telling her everything that she saw. Her mother had been silent, unlike Jie who had been upset and horrified and disgusted and all of those foul emotions in between.
That night, the Zhou family had sat together the dining table for dinner, and chatted on as if nothing had happened, as if she didn’t just notice the unmoral activity of her father.
That week, she had missed her competition, and lost her one way ticket to the junior national team.
The night of the competition, she cried. Big fat sorrowful sobs into her pillow in the middle of the night. And it was the last time she ever cried.
But nothing was ever the same, not anymore.
If she was given the choice to go back in time to change the past, she would no doubt stop herself from calling her mother and telling her everything. Maybe, just maybe if she had kept quiet, they would still be the happy little family that they had been all along. More precisely, the happy little family that they had been pretending to be all this while. It was Jie alone, who had been too naïve and too young to see through it.
As it turned out, her father had always been in various relationships with various women throughout her parents’ marriage. Her mother knew about it all along, and she had chosen to kept quiet all this time. For the sake of Jie and her future, as her mother tearfully admitted during her father’s funeral not too long after. It was as if Papa Zhou had decided to just go all out, now that his dirty little secret had been discovered by his daughter. He was never home early anymore, or he would come home smelling like alcohol, all the while ignoring her mother’s forced smiles as she tended to him, and ignoring Jie’s stares on the lipstick stains on his shirt collar. When he wasn’t drunk, he was angry all the time. He was angry at her mother for not allowing any alcohol in the house, and for trying to talk to him; he was angry at Jieqiong for not making it to the junior national team, as she soon realized that the reason he was even supporting her learning the expensive pipa all those years was because he was eyeing the annual salary of a national team member’s. Those days of him drunk and mad didn’t last very long. Half a year later, Jieqiong’s father died. He had been driving over speed under the influence of alcohol one night, and that had cost him his life.
Jieqiong didn’t cry at all, during the entire funeral, unlike her mother who had been sobbing and weeping the entire time.
Ever since her father’s death, Mama Zhou had been nothing but a depressed emotional mess who couldn’t even eat or sleep properly. It was like his death had affected her so deeply that she had lost her own life with him when he died. And Jie could not even begin to understand that, she was mad. Mad at him for being irresponsible, for not loving the both of them enough, and for turning her mother this way; and she was mad at her mother for even allowing a man who didn’t love her enough to hurt her like this, to turn her into such a mess. Her mother had gotten sick not long after his father’s death. Perhaps it was the stress building up from all this time, or perhaps it was just God’s way of trying to test their endurance, her mother was diagnosed with liver cancer. Still not too late for treatments, her mother quitted her day job as a kindergarten teacher and was admitted into the hospital. The costly treatments and surgeries costed their family’s entire savings, and soon enough Jieqiong busied herself with attending school, running three part time jobs and making regular daily trips to the hospital.

A little more than a year had passed before her mother’s third surgery was considered a failed one, the doctor’s recommendation for treatments in Seoul, South Korea did nothing but to restore the little hope that they dared to still have in their hearts.
A month later, they were in South Korea. For someone who had never spoke of the language nor experienced the culture before, Jieqiong was adjusting pretty well. She used whatever money they had left to rent herself a small apartment in downtown Seoul, while using the rest to pay off her mother’s hospital bills, and also her Korean language lessons. She picked up the language easily in no time, thanks to the few part time jobs that she had landed. Jie was busy trying to earn enough money to cover her mother’s hospitals bills and her daily expenses. At the tender age of 15, she had done most part time jobs. Delivery jobs, restaurant part timers, cinema part timers, karaoke part timers, she had done it all.
Between all her busy shift schedules and her trips to the hospital, she didn’t have much time for herself. The only time where she could relax for a brief moment was when she was commuting from one place to another. If there was one thing that remained the same for her in all these years, it was music. She would always have her earphones plugged in, music blasting in her ears while she kept her mind occupied by the lyrics and also the wandering people passing by here and there. She watched students skipping down the street laughing, couples huddled close together for quiet laughs, families taking walks together. And she realized she was lonely, and tired this entire time. That was when she slowly started to write her feelings down, in short notes, lyrics. Bits and pieces of her thoughts and feelings.

By the time it was for high school, she enrolled in a local high school. High school was alright, for someone who didn't quite speak the language well, her classmates didn't really mind her much. Though they did invite her over for lunch and included her in group projects, or even some hangouts. There were also a few rude ones, who would do anything to make fun of her, , prank her every day. She didn’t care much about that, all she ever did in school was to study, attend classes, thinking about her part time shifts, and also daydream. She would daydream about a life that she could be having, if everything wasn’t the way it was. She would daydream about her playing music on a stage in front of a large crowd, with her parents watching her proudly. The class that she enjoyed the most in high school was music class, the theoretical part was nothing but fun and easy to her- she had learnt how to read music notes for a long time after all, and the practical part was even more fun. They would get to sing, and dance around in class Instead of tests and exams. She was always the happiest when it was music class’s time, a smile on her face the entire time, much to her classmates and the teacher’s amusement. When she had got invited to join the school’s music club, she joined without any hesitation. She knew she didn’t have much time for that between all her part time jobs and also her visits to the hospital, but it was the one thing that she really wanted to do, for herself.

She wounded up joining the school band through the music club, going on gigs and busking on the street every other weekend. One of the band members had taught her how to play guitar, given her previous experiences in playing string instruments, she mastered it quickly and that was how she ended up being the guitarist of the band. They would perform song covers during their busking, and it was the happiest she had been in a long time. And when one of the members started to post their song covers on SNS, Jieqiong had been quite the hot topic around some social media platforms, mostly due to her looks. That was also the story of how she came to be recruited as a model for some magazine photoshoots, for some fashion brands and even a few cosmetic brands. The modelling gigs had been fun, and it certainly paid well than all her part time jobs combined. Her delicate and captivating looks certainly had been a blessing in this case.

With her random but constant modelling gigs here and there, she spent a lot of time doing photoshoots, while quitting most of her part time jobs. The rest of the time she was either at school, or with the band practicing. Slowly, the stress began to slowly ease off, she began to smile more, and she thought maybe life wasn't all that bad anymore. She was finally earning enough money to cover for her mother's costly hospital bills, and for the first time in a long while, she was truly happy. Music played a huge part in that. And she had thought maybe things were getting better after all.

But of course, she was wrong again.

That year, her mother left the world, leaving Jieqiong in this big and crowded world all alone. That night that she passed away, Jieqiong was having the time of her life with the band. She had landed a modelling gig for a local fashion magazine, and the photoshoot had been a huge success apparently, with pictures of her photoshoot being a hot topic all over the social media. In an exceptionally good mood, she was having a lot of fun busking with the band, singing her heart out while her fingers strummed effortlessly on her guitar. Her phone was long forgotten in her bag. It was well past midnight when the band finally called it a night, and it had been too late when she checked her phone. She had a dozen calls from the hospital, all trying to reach her to inform the news of her mother’s passing due to organ failure. Jieqiong was dumbfounded at first, couldn’t find herself to process what happened, until she rushed over to the hospital and that was when realization finally dawned on her. That her mother was gone, forever. That she was really alone now.

Jieqiong never cried, not even during her mother’s funeral, much to everyone’s astonishment as her classmates and teachers took pity on her, and offered words of comfort. But those words fell on deaf ears as she completely shut herself off from the rest of the world. Sure, she still attended school, went to band practice, continue to accept modelling gigs, and went for her part time job shifts. But she wasn’t the same anymore. It was like she lost the purpose of her life, never quite finding meaning in anything else. There were only brief moments of her old self creeping into her smile and her eyes when she performed with the band during their usual busking.

It wasn't long before she got scouted to be an idol trainee, having contacted her after the videos of her busking, and her photoshoot pictures became a hot topic on the social media. She had rejected the offer at first, but honestly she didn't even have any goals in her life. Having realizing that maybe this would be the only chance where she could finally do something for herself that makes her happy, she went for the audition with a small hope in her heart and had been a trainee ever since. This would be her only goal, to perform on stage and be happy for once, for the ones listening to her, and for herself.

Personality
She doesn't talk much about herself, more like she doesn't find the reason or purpose to tell about herself. She wouldn't say she has lived a hard life, but she has been through some that she would rather not talk about. Having worked numerous part time jobs before, if there is one thing she learnt from all her experiences, it's that people can be harsh and rude most of the time. She hates it a lot, but she has learnt to put on a fake smile at those times, and tries to charm her way out with her wits, words and of course those oh-so-sweet smiles of hers. She may seem nice and quite easy-going most of the time, but it's just a front she puts on to maintain a good image, but deep down she doesn't care about much,- more like she's been through too much to care deeply about anything again, unless it involves herself. She spent years blaming herself for what's happened to her family, she still does, even though she knows it's barely her fault, but you see, it's hard not to blame yourself in situations like this. That results in her suffering from depression as well as insomnia due to the nightmares that she would have, but again, she never talks about it and she would much prefer if people just leave her alone and not look at her with quesitioning eyes full of pity and sympathy. Rather a quiet person, it takes a lot to amuse her but once you get past the walls that she put up, you will find out she's actually a very warm and captivating person and is desperately in need of a friend, though she would never admit it out loud. She spends a lot of time nowadays just practicing / training alone, or even spending time at the cafe that she currently works at for extra cashflow.
