BIOGRAPHY
the only daughter to a blue collar worker and a housekeeper, from very early on, gyuri was pressured to succeed. none of her immediate or extended family went to college, most were able to get by from odd jobs, factory jobs, or farming. her parents wanted her to go further, be better than the rest of the family. anything below an a- was unacceptable, a slightly negative comment from teachers was like a death sentence. the pressure was even exerted onto her body and her social life. if she gained too much weight, she was scolded and given less at dinner. and her parents would have to approve her friends - ones that would not distract her from their goals.
even though she knew consciously that they were being this strict out of love, it did little to comfort her. when there were times that her father would be between jobs, she had to step up and take part time jobs in order to help make ends meet in the household.
