he was never supposed to lose. the point, the point- of ricky, the reason for his existence, should have been to be the winning pawn in this game of chess. it was what his family had wished for and had drilled into him all through childhood. he was a prime alpha, he was heir to the shen estate, he would be the final winner amongst the new generation.
but they gave him too much, too much freedom, too much pride, too many things to stuff a head that wasn't supposed to have very many thoughts of its own with. or maybe they were too arrogant in their own assumptions of power that nobody ever stopped to consider a failsafe if their perfectly groomed dog ever started biting back.
a young lion is never content to stay underneath the thumb of the old leader. to him it was only a rite of passage to bare his fangs at the frail hands grasping so stubbornly to power. he was tiring of the chains and muzzle choking out the young beast, red clouding his eyes and his mind.
but the young king to be locked up in his golden walls did not know of the secrets lurking beyond the shadows, not yet. his challenges crashed into the ground with the rest of his youthful naivety, everything he once thought to be in the palm of his hands burning into ashes. but it would be their error to leave him alive.

writer's notes on ricky. ignore if you don't want to hear the breakdown.
ricky is a fundamentally self-driven character. he does not take issue with the state of society, only that he isn't sitting at the top of it. any attempts to overthrow the rules exists only to serve his own goals of climbing to the top of the ladder.
ricky is two extremes glued together. though he has been taught to be masterful and constantly in control of his wolf to the point of denial, he has recently begun dipping into his animalistic instincts both to refute his family's teachings and due to the cracks in his own mind.
though romantically (or logically) more attracted to betas and omegas, ricky chooses almost exclusively alphas ually to satisfy his thirst for power and in dominating or being dominated by those at the top of the pyramid.
