♫ Vowels and Consonants

Korean Alphabet

Hangul consists of twenty-one vowels and nineteen consonants.

*Note: These romaniations may change a bit depending on words

Put the vowels and consonants together as shown below to make a letter.

The darker orange is where the consonant goes. This consonant is a must! It can't be a letter without it.

The lavender to the right and under the darker orange is where the vowel go. Depending on the vowel, it can go on either the right side, bottom side or both.

----> ㅏ ㅑ ㅓ ㅕ ㅣ goes in the right lavender box

          ㅗ ㅛ ㅜ ㅠ ㅡ goes in the bottom lavender box

          ㅘ ㅙ ㅚ ㅝ ㅞ ㅟ ㅟ goes in both, separately.

The lighter orange is also the consonant, but this is only when the letter ends with the consonant.

----> han gul. both has the final consonant because of hagul  (the bolded one is the ending consonant).

-----> sa rang hae yo (I love you). the first letter (sa) does not have the final consonant. so it's just spelled 사

Example:

ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 한  (Han)

ㄱ + ㅡ + ㄹ = 글  (Gul)

It's a little out of proportion, but you get the idea.

Korean alphabet is pretty easy to learn. Many people say it's easier to learn than english because it doesn't have that many exceptions or hard spellings. Some also say that Hangul is one of the most beautiful, and scientific language out there! :)

This concept is confusing so don't worry if you don't understand right away. Feel free to ask me questions!

@Fateen 8 months late but...yahhh.

It's mostly because romanisation is used for "easiness"...but it really and people tend to use whatever they think it is most of the time .-. that's why there's always fighting and confusion over "spelling" when it's romanised. I don't tend to use romanisation at all. It's not useful in the slightest anyway ><

do you know any websites which can test your korean consonants and vowels?
Fateen 10 years ago
@sarah ahhh .. so it's like that! That's why they used 'eu' instead of 'u' .. i get it now ;D Thank U
Sarah 10 years ago
I mean correct me if I am wrong.
Sarah 10 years ago
@Fateen If I am not mistaken, sometimes which I find interesting as well too. But "Hangul" is also depends spelled "Hangeul"
Fateen 10 years ago

@Angie Oh well usually d=ㄷ t=ㅌ tt=ㄸ
Like 태민 (Taemin)
and 대현 (Daehyun)
Aime [A] 10 years ago
@Angie Sorry, difference between what? xp
Aime [A] 10 years ago
@Niel Ohhh haha i get it now. When ㅅ is used as the ending consonant, then it makes kind of a ㅌ sound
Niel 10 years ago
@Aime For example, the word igeot, the hangul is 이것. So, I'm kind of confused as to why they used the s for it.
Aime [A] 10 years ago
@Niel Hm you gotta be more specific. What are you talking about? ㅌ and ㅅ is not interchangeable though.
Niel 10 years ago
I know the structures and all that. The thing I'm confused about is how people use the s hangul for t sometimes. Like, is the t replaced with an s kind of like the shorter way to write it?
Aime [A] 10 years ago
@Fateen What are you confused about?
Fateen 10 years ago
I've learned this before but i still confused how to write it -.-
Aime [A] 10 years ago
@Alleycat Haha yeah the alphabet itself is pretty easy to learn but it needs a lot of practice. What part are you confused about?
Alleycat 10 years ago
Thanks! This is helpful though I've got to say I am still a bit confused, but it'll get easier as I learn more.
