Youjin didn't always want to be an idol. When he was younger, his only interest was to become a producer. However, this all changed when he entered middle school. His parents sent him to a performing arts school since he was very dedicated to music. He was introduced to acting, he became intrigued by the other options that were available for him in the entertainment industry.
He began to explore singing, dancing and songwriting and became top in the school. He then began to explore rapping by entering the underground leagues, where he became popular in the scene.
In his second year of high school, Youjin began to act in various commercials and became a model. Then he began to act in various dramas - playing as either the lead or the second lead. However, after graduating high school, Youjin decided to go to the military so that he could come back into the industry as soon as possible without having to take a long hiatus.
Returning from his two year military service, since Youjin was independent prior to his military service, it was time for him to find a company. He auditioned for Crown Royal Entertainment and decided to quit acting for now in an attempt to become an idol, which was his new dream.
He is the older brother of Yang Hongseok - however, he did not live with his famiy in China, instead he lived in South Korea with his grandparents. His last name is different since he took their mother's surname instead of his father's.
