Kaya was born to a middle-class family in England, and grew up in London, but was forced to move to a rough part of Birmingham in her teenage years after her father became unemployed. She had always been a straight A student before, but soon found that studying wasn't enough to occupy her during the tougher day.s To avoid going home to her drunk father and the mother who grew to hate everything in life, she eventually fell to a life of underage drinking, drug-taking, and partying. Eventually, a concerned aunt invited her to move to the US. Kaya practically leapt at the chance.

Economically, her aunt wasn't much better off, but at the very least she was willing to accommodate and treat her like a real family. Feeling like she owed it to her aunt to at least clean up her act, she did so. Although she only went to a state university for her undergraduate degree, it was enough to get her to the next stage of life. It was there that she met the love of her life, and after graduating they consequently married. She was happily married and was accepted to a top university on scholarship for her postgraduate by 22.

Unfortunately, her hapiness didn't last long. Two years and two miscarriages later, the strains in their relationship grew until it broke, and her husband left. "I think we were too young, too reckless, too quick to decide to marry... we're just not right together," he told her. He didn't bother to make a better excuse than a cliched line. She was also struggling mentally after the miscarriages, but she was willing to see it through, and he wasn't. She said nothing. He left. They divorced.

Close to breaking point, she moved as far away as she could, and found herself at the doorstep of Jay's house. After a few days of endless crying there, she decided to apply for the vacant teaching position at the school.

Kaya can seem a little unapproachable, and her sarcastic, taunting personality is a little difficult to handle. She's impartial to just about everyone and everything, a natural instinct to protect herself from getting too attached to anything. She knows no relationship is for ever, be it friendship, family ties, or love. So she's unwilling to build ties that are too deep. At least for now. She's also impulsive, so even at 25 she often finds herself in unfavourable situations.

Even then, she takes her job very seriously and will go to great lengths to make sure all her students do not wind up just like she did in her high school days. She has a weakness to anything and anyone "cute" but most o the time has a unique description of it.
