TRIGGER WARNING: SUBSTANCE ABUSE

— born in jeju island, south korea. his parents divorced when he was three; he relocated to london, uk with his father, while his mother stayed back in jeju to look after her family’s inn. his father opened a korean bbq restaurant in southwest london.

— yonggi’s parents originally wanted to bring him back to jeju every year during his summer holidays, but none of them were able to afford frequent trips. he ended up visiting only once every three years and otherwise spent his holidays in korean summer schools in london, keeping him in touch with his native language and culture.

— helped out in the restaurant once he is old enough to work part-time. it was also then that his parents’ friendly relationship became strained because they were debating on whether yonggi should inherit the restaurant or the inn. eventually they stopped talking to each other, and yonggi stopped visiting jeju once he started going to university.

— at the same time he had a rebellious phase; he moved out of his father’s home (even though he wasn’t expected to move out and his university was not too far from their home) and set out to live on his own. he stopped contacting his father as well, deeming that he was the main cause of the dispute between them as yonggi himself wanted to move back to jeju. he wanted to save up enough to fly himself back to his hometown, but in this economy? he ended up living off his loans and his earnings from working part-time, which was barely enough to make ends meet.

— he dropped out midway due to stress, and also because he decided it wasn’t worth the debt. he couldn’t secure himself a decent-paying job as a result and had to take up plenty of workload. it was also then that he developed a drinking and smoking addiction, which soon spiralled into hard drugs. this resulted in plenty of relationship breakdowns, but one way or another he met his would-be fiancé, who eventually got him to sober up. he starts saving up again and intends to bring the two of them back to jeju.

— not long after their engagement, however, yonggi hears from his mother that the inn is no more as the premises are now used to build the white lotus. filled with anguish as he couldn’t do anything to save the inn, he sets out on a mission to seek revenge and destroy the hotel from the inside. he leaves his fiancé without another word as he didn’t want to drag them into what may potentially get him into irreversible trouble. so he books a one-way ticket to jeju without anyone’s knowledge and landed a job as the hotel’s front desk manager.

— as an employee, he’s smart enough to mess with the hotel in a way that only gets him reprimanded at most. his colleagues know him as a ditzy manager who can’t seem to do his job right, but little do they know that it’s all part of his plan—and that it’s about to escalate right before their eyes.
