Background:  The Somsri family was generations old, made of soldiers and scholars, who stood with utmost loyalty and devotion to the King of Siam. However, when the Late King passed before winter of 1868, a new order took to the throne and within the blink of an eye, everything that Duan once lived for, changed. All the males with Somsri blood, young and old, met their demise at the hands of the newest ruler, while the females were bought and sold like livestock to serve as slaves. Duan’s fate was less harsh and she found herself within the walls of the palace as a lowly maid–a gardener for the beloved Crown Princess, Achara. With her perseverance and strong-will, Duan gained the Crown Princess’ favor and was chosen to work closely as her personal handmaiden. However, it seems, a sinister shadow had loomed over the Somsri bloodline, for within weeks of working in her new position, the Crown Princess was poisoned and suffered the loss of her unborn child. Planted evidence pointed Duan as the suspect and without proper trial, she was sentenced to a public execution. The dawn of her death day, a riot took to the streets—believers who had faith in the innocence of the Somsri family—within the chaos, Duan was freed, and so, she ran. She will starkly remember how the heel of her small two feet carried her over towards the roaring harbor, and with prayer, she snuck into the hull of a ship. Silence and darkness kept her company for many nights as the ship rocked with the current of giant waves, and when sunlight finally graced her fearful face, she landed on the shores of Joseon—lost and found, all at once.
