Dear readers,

The anecdotes of romance continue to entice the frigid winter air, intermingling with the cries of merchants and farmers from the loss of crops. While they decry their impending poverty, there were tales of prosperity and wealth for a small fraction, or the upper echelon, of the cheonmin class. It is a tale reminiscent of the princess and the pauper, pages torn out of a fairytale book.

What usually forms a chasm within the caste system is the entanglement of a yangban man and a cheonmin woman. Instead of lingering in the gisaeng houses, Min Saera from House of the Magnolia, better known as her former persona Seo Jung, was whisked away by a young gentleman by the name of Jin Jaeyong, hailing from the House of the Haetae. Peering through the thin windows was the yangban man, entranced by her beauty before falling under her spell. Despite being a frequent patron, along with his father, it planted the seeds for his newfound desire to blossom into infatuation. Eventually, from the word of various informants, the man bought her her freedom from Sook, thus resulting in the dissolution of her gisaeng name and embracing her original identity, one step closer to becoming his concubine. It is now proven that love prevails most in the face of struggle and the cries of Gu Won echoing from his grave. Lord Jin ultimately won over Lady Min’s heart, his love-stricken self mercilessly defeating his fellow marquess competitors.

Speaking of the union between differing classes, wedding bells chimed at the marriage between Choi Saemi from House of the Nightingale and Go Youngjae from House of the Cosmos. After their consequent appearances in previous editions of the papers, town yellers loitering on the street announced the upcoming date to fall on the day marking the regaling of amorous love, causing much fanfare for the pair. Observant bystanders also noted the slight bump peeking through the layers of her dress, noticing the sturdier material of her clothing as well. A certain glow seemed to radiate from her face, and the gravitas in the royal investigator slowly dissipated. Perhaps in preparation for carrying out nuptials? One will surmise, with cautious regard and healthy propensity for gossip.

Storms plagued not just the city of Hanseong but also Duke Chae’s hometown of Pyeongchang, as he remains inside of his illustrious ancestral estate. The famine continues to worsen at one of its epicentres. Yet, presenting herself as a beacon of light shining through the darkness shrouding the Chae Estate, Seo Eunjeong from House of the Heliotrope returned in his life at the most opportune time. Though those may eye roll at the mention of two upperclassmen reconvening in merriment, it is hard to overlook the radiant couple and the previous rumours that hinted at the artifice of their annulment. After the clandestine meetings in his hanok initiated by Miss Seo, they finally remarried after overcoming the torrents burdening their relationship and the burden weighing down their shoulders finally languishing. As I wrote with bated breath, Lady Seo underwent the transformation of her name to Duchess Chae of House of the Black Tortoise, and forever loyal partner to the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Justice.

Even as Joseon goes through one of its many blunders, the nation and its people show little to no sign of weakness as they trudge through every obstacle thrown in their path. Amidst the monsoons is the rebirth of the fecund air of spring, as well as the continuation of the marriage chain. I foresee the land of Joseon to finally recover its loss in population the preceding year as we continually bear witness to the blossoming of love.

It is time for us to rejoice! For the echoes of celebration from the grand union between the House of Cosmos and the House of the Willow Tree still reverberate through the corridors of the Ton. Although the nuptial rites occurred but a few days hence, the fervent buzz of gossip surrounding the affair has only just begun to settle, leaving many a curious soul on all that transpired that fateful night. Fear not, for this author will share a summary of the most notable occurrences!

When discussing the wedding between Lord Miro and Lady Yeonhwa, one cannot simply leave out the names of a certain marquess from the House of Shining Moon and the youngest daughter of the House of the Amaranth. Indeed, Moon Hyeongwon and Geum Eunbyeol made their official debut of their courtship at the event in a spectacle that perhaps upstaged the newlywed couple themselves. Clad in matching hanbok and adorned with couple rings, they walked into the Ryu estate with their fingers entwined and did not let go of one another throughout the entirety of the event. There, it is said that the Duke delivered promises of eternal devotion through the form of sacred whispers before the two lovers surrendered themselves to a scandalous act of passion. Though it would be improper of me to delineate the particulars of such a tryst, may I suggest the imagery of an eager bee imbibing nectar from a fragrant blossom? To engage in such dalliance amidst another’s nuptials is not only audacious but also somewhat distasteful. Yet, perchance forgiveness should be granted considering that love does possess the power to render even the most rational of men besotted fools.

This sentiment finds affirmation in the intimate tête-à-tête between another pair. Near the precincts of the estate’s kitchens, Lord Miro’s bodyguard—Choi Geon—was observed ensnaring a certain individual against the wall, their discourse tinged with the unmistakable hues of romance. Upon closer scrutiny, it was revealed to be none other than the esteemed artist, Bae Eunhyuk of the House of Daisy, who had been commissioned to capture the likeness of the newlyweds. Two men, captivated within their own private reverie, visages mere inches apart... need I elaborate further?

Alas, if I went on to describe every single interaction that had me raising my eyebrows, this volume of mine would not come to an end. Yet, one thing remains apparent—the wedding was abound with the heady fragrance of romance in the wind. Heartfelt felicitations unto Count Go Miro and his radiant Countess Yeonhwa upon their union. Mayhap a blissful matrimony shall ensue, despite the minor hiccup that marked the commencement of their wedded bliss.
