@✿ moon hyeongwon perhaps, moon hyeongwon had been a despicable ghost in the past, a poltergeist, or maybe even the devil himself, enticing her with worldly desires and subsequently disillusioning her.

eunbyeol continued to struggle in his hold, pressing her palms against his strong chest to push him away, to fully relinquish the grip that his very presence has on her. if this was a mistake, then she would want the taste of his lips gone this very moment — but the memory of his soft tiers and its gentle caress on her own continued to linger in the recesses of her mind.

eunbyeol hated it. no, she despised it.

in her struggle, she missed the plea in his eyes, the fleeting emotions that passed by his visage so quickly. eunbyeol stumbled back when he let go, only having been tethered by his grip on her wrist. the yangban woman tried to dampen the feelings that continued its attempts in resurfacing, wrenching her hand free from his. however, hyeongwon seemed adamant in reeling her in, perhaps teasing her for having let her emotions take over.

❝just say the word, and i'll gladly kiss you again❞

there it was, the cockiness and the audacity of the man who, not long ago, was returning her kiss with a tenderness she could not place, whose gaze was soft upon their parting. if eunbyeol had not been seething, then perhaps his actions would have confused her. instead, she forcefully pulled back, her brows furrowing deeply, and before she could even stop herself, her palm landed on his cheek. the sound cut through the stillness in the wind, echoing throughout the garden. the nearby butterflies all went fluttering away at the noise.

the girl had never felt so proud of herself.

“you,” she began through gritted teeth. her face reddened as she fumed, gaze sharp as she peered into his dark orbs. “this — this was a mistake indeed. i do not want anything to do with you. never speak of this to me, or to anyone else. goodbye, moon hyeongwon.”

as she her heel, eunbyeol’s vision slowly became obscured with unshed tears. in her haste, she failed to notice an ornament leaving her chima, falling gracefully unto the ground like a leaf being left behind as a memory of the last vestiges of spring.

eunbyeol would not stop thinking about him no matter how she tried and when her eyes would close on the way to her estate, she would hear her heart shattering into pieces as the kiss and his words would replay over and over again like a nightmare she could not wake up from.

@✿ geum eunbyeol As he held her close, a profound sense of completion washed over him. Each time their lips met, the chaos of his mind found clarity. Yet, despite these deep sensations, why did his spoken words seem to contradict the truth in his heart? Why would he allow such a precious moment to slip through his fingers like grains of sand?
In the instant they parted, Hyeongwon caught a fleeting warmth in Eunbyeol's gaze, as if his own eyes reflected hers, albeit perhaps with a hint of desperation. There was a vulnerability in his gaze, a yearning to draw closer once more, to taste her lips again and unravel the tangle of emotions threatening to overwhelm him.

However, as those four words escaped his lips, Hyeongwon felt the weight of impending loss settle upon him once more. He could still taste the lingering sweetness of her kiss, yet deep down, he understood she was not his to keep. She was not a possession to be cherished at will. The impending shift in her gaze—from fleeting warmth to impending disgust and hatred—was all too evident.
As she attempted to withdraw, Hyeongwon's arms instinctively tightened around her, a futile gesture of desperation to prolong her presence, to delay the inevitable departure he dreaded. The very act of holding her tighter was both a selfish plea and a silent acknowledgment of his impending solitude.

But she was Geum Eunbyeol, a force of her own, and nothing in this world could tether her to a place or person against her will. Hyeongwon reluctantly released his grip, though his hand lingered unconsciously on her wrist, a silent testament to his inner struggle. It was as if he hesitated to let her slip away, despite knowing it was futile.

What words could he possibly muster in this moment? Would he dare plead for her to stay? The thought seemed absurd. After all, they were nothing more than acquaintances now—mere echoes of a once cherished friendship and affection that had long since faded into distant memory. The bond they once shared was like a fragile ghost, haunting the present but unable to bridge the chasm of time and change that had grown between them.

Parallels of their encounter a decade ago to now was apparent and it seemed like the marquess already knew how this meeting would end. Likely another declaration of how much they vexxed each other. But he would say it first this time. He would be the first to bite.

"Am I imagining things, or did the great Geum Eunbyeol just seek solace in my arms?" Hyeongwon's words dripped with fake bravado as he pulled her close once more, his fingers lingering on her wrist. The act of pretending weighed heavily on him; he longed to simply hold her, to feel her warmth, yet he understood all too well that her feelings did not mirror his own.

"Just say the word, and I'll gladly kiss you again," the marquess continued, smirking with a false sense of confidence, all the while inwardly pleading for Eunbyeol to see through his facade. Despite the swagger in his tone, each word was laced with an undercurrent of vulnerability, a silent admission of his yearning for a connection that might never be reciprocated.

@✿ oh bitna [Backdated to late November, 1869]

“What a splendid day,” Hyeongwon mused to himself as he embarked upon his customary routine of sorting through case paperwork he had brought home. The papers were now spread out upon a table in the tranquil gardens of the Moon estate. Despite his hiatus from the Office of Inspection, he diligently attended to tasks that could be completed in the comfort of his home, particularly on days when the outside world seemed lackluster. At present, having just concluded his rigorous swordsmanship practice, beads of sweat formed on his brow as he reached for a cloth placed conveniently next to the paperwork, wiping away the perspiration. The autumn weather, with its full embrace of Hanseong, provided a pleasant coolness that tempered the day's exertions.

Autumn held a special allure for Hyeongwon, drawing him outdoors with its captivating foliage and ideal weather. The crisp air invigorated his senses, making it an opportune season for focused training. Engrossed in his swordsmanship practice one afternoon, Hyeongwon's concentration was suddenly shattered by the unexpected sight of a grappling hook sailing over the walls of the estate, landing just a short distance away from where he stood.

Surprised and on high alert, the Marquess instinctively assumed the worst—a potential intruder breaching the walls in broad daylight. With his sword at the ready, he cautiously approached the spot where the grappling hook had landed, prepared to confront the trespasser. Little did he know, what awaited him on the other side would defy all expectations.

Oh Bitna.

Hyeongwon's beloved yet exasperating older sister figure. Was she actually adorned in her brother's military uniform? It seemed she had playfully borrowed it from the Oh Marquess himself. Hyeongwon's initial tension eased as he recognized her familiar form, his sword now held casually in his grasp as he awaited her descent from the wall.

Observing Bitna's daring maneuver, Hyeongwon couldn't help but feel a mix of concern and amusement. He hoped she wouldn't injure herself in the process, though deep down he knew she possessed the agility and determination to land safely. If by chance she did take a misstep, well, it was entirely her own impulsive undertaking.

As Bitna gracefully touched down on the ground, her infectious grin mirrored Hyeongwon's relieved expression. "Bitna, must you always find such unconventional ways to visit?" he teased, unable to suppress a chuckle. Despite the occasional headaches she caused, her spontaneous spirit never failed to inject excitement into Hyeongwon's otherwise orderly life.

"Bitna noonim... You do realize there's a perfectly functional gate to enter the estate, right?" Hyeongwon remarked with a mix of amusement and exasperation. He gestured toward her outfit with the tip of his sword, a playful yet pointed indication of her unconventional attire.

"Does Marquess Oh know that you've appropriated one of his uniforms?" Hyeongwon asked with genuine amusement sparkling in his eyes. Bitna never ceased to surprise him over the years they had known each other. Despite their unconventional introduction, they had forged a lasting friendship, often initiated by Bitna's bold outreach.

"The city lights, you say?" Hyeongwon sheathed his sword, knowing all too well that when Bitna mentioned such things, she intended to whisk him away from the estate to a lively gibang, where they would revel in the finest liquors, good company, and captivating music. Who was he to decline the invitation of a friend so rarely seen in Hanseong?

"As long as you're footing the bill, gracious Marchioness Oh," he added with a smile, acknowledging Bitna's penchant for extravagance. The paperwork could wait; they had much catching up to do.

"And speaking of attire," Hyeongwon continued, eyeing Bitna's unconventional outfit with a mix of amusement and curiosity, "are you truly planning to venture out in that ensemble?"

@❀ yoo hyunsik Although Hyeongwon hadn't served on the front lines himself, he was granted an early departure compared to his fellow soldiers. He eagerly anticipated his brother's swift return, assuming they would reunite shortly after his own arrival home. However, as hours stretched into days, the marquess's initial optimism waned, replaced by a growing sense of concern. The realization slowly settled upon him that Jaehoon might not return at all, and this weighed heavily on his heart. More than assuming the responsibilities of title and duchy, the younger Moon sibling found himself consumed by worry and uncertainty.

The situation was further complicated by the presence of their mother in the estate, devoutly praying for the safe return of her beloved eldest son. Hyeongwon had grown accustomed to the chilly reception upon his own return, but witnessing his mother nearly unravel when Jaehoon failed to arrive with the initial wave of returning soldiers was a new and distressing experience for him.

Therefore, when a visitor appeared at the estate gates, Hyeongwon abandoned all sense of decorum and hurried towards the entrance. Though it might have been a mere courier, he clung to the hope that this unexpected visitor held news—any news—regarding his missing brother. As he approached the gates with a mixture of apprehension and anticipation, the weight of uncertainty hung heavy in the air, mingling with his deep-seated concern for Jaehoon's fate.

"Please," Hyeongwon implored, his voice breathless and strained. "Tell me you have news about my brother, Moon Jaehoon." His eyes, shadowed by sleepless nights spent pondering the grim possibility of his brother's absence, betrayed his deep-seated worry and exhaustion. The weight of uncertainty bore down heavily on him, leaving him desperate for any shred of information that might provide solace or, at the very least, clarity in the face of this agonizing ordeal.

The war had ended finally, and all the troops that made it through the various battles were now headed home. Hyunsik having been one of them, however, he couldn’t say the same for some of his friends that he has made during the time. Though having been used to the idea of losing anyone, it didn’t make it any more easy for it to happen.

Seeing everyone come back once the battles were over, he saw the mixed reactions of everyone, being able to rejoice when they saw their loved ones, the families waiting only to not have their soldier come home, and then some soldiers had no one to greet them. It was something akin to bittersweet. Hyunsik had went to greet his family and ensure of them that he made it through the war safely. Though, he parted ways with them shortly after to relay the news of others not making it back.

Hyunsik found himself standing in front of the Moon Estate, staring at the door for a long moment. It was an easy task to do, and one that he has done before. That didn’t make the task any easier. With a heavy breath, he knocked on the door to announce his presence there. His nails digging into the hilt of the sword on his waist as he waited patiently for someone, anyone to answer.

@✿ moon hyeongwon this was her own doing and yet, it seemed that he was consuming her, engulfing her in such a warmth that only he could evoke.

eunbyeol's mind was gone in a haze the moment that their lips touched, the moment that hyeongwon began to reciprocate the kiss albeit tentatively. the world around them appeared to have listened to their needs for time began to still as she relished the taste of his delicate tiers. his hand was warm and his touch a gentle weight upon the plumpness of her cheek, and the marchioness leaned ever so slightly, almost unwilling to part from it.

in that moment of tenderness, eunbyeol surrendered herself to illusions of what should have been had they not parted ways years ago, to a longing that sprung free from the hatred that caged it all this time. the lady allowed herself to melt into the other's embrace, finding it a comfortable place to lose herself in. as their kiss deepened, she found herself holding unto his durumagi tighter, a last grip to reality before her breath shall be truly taken away.

she remained intoxicated even as they come up for air, overwhelmed by what had transpired between them and the rush of the emotions that took forth. the thudding in her chest never ceased all this time, even hastening in pace the moment their foreheads touched. the action was too intimate for two people who claimed to have absolved any connection that they have had between them. for once, eunbyeol wanted to believe that they could do undo the past with such a gesture, that they could rewrite their history at this very moment.

it seemed, however, that hyeongwon was never on the same page.

❝this was a mistake.❞

four words.

it only took four words to contest the fragility of the moment, to shatter such illusions of a union that had been futile from the start. eunbyeol was reminded of what he was: a glorified rake — and that she was, indeed, just another woman who fell for his spells. for a moment, she felt crestfallen, violated even, that despite having caught the softness of his gaze, she chose to ignore it.

she would dampen, yet again, the feelings that she had harbored for him as a child, willing them to never resurface, to hide behind the walls she's spent years building.

disgust and dread coursed through her veins but despite such negativity, a tinge of regret still lingered within her, a semblance of longing that was briefly gratified by his touch.

however, she was geum eunbyeol. her peace was all that mattered.

without a word, she struggled within his hold. her once peaceful visage was quickly replaced by a myriad of emotions: hurt, confusion, and anger. she had been a fool to even allow herself to feel anything other than a more familiar ache in her chest.

stupid, stupid hyeongwon.

she needed to get away, she thought. yet, her hands were only making feeble attempts to escape the throes of this meeting.

The warmth of Mina's friendship envelops her like a comforting embrace, easing the weight of guilt that had settled upon her shoulders.

A soft chuckle escapes Sejoon's lips at Mina's mention of her horse, Bonhwa, and his anticipation to meet her. "Bada will be delighted to make a new friend, even if it is a fellow equine," she replies with a playful twinkle in her eyes. The thought of spending time with Mina and her beloved horse fills her with a sense of joy and excitement, a welcome respite from the turmoil of the past.

"Food sounds perfect," Sejoon agrees, returning Mina's teasing with a light-hearted grin. @✿ geum eunbyeol Time appeared to freeze as Hyeongwon felt the soft pressure of Eunbyeol's lips meeting his own. His eyes widened in surprise as she tugged at his durumagi collar, prompting him to bend down to her level. Expecting her usual biting sarcasm or a cutting insult, the marquess was taken aback to instead feel her delicate lips against his. He almost wanted to shake himself awake from what felt like a dream, but the sensation of her lips moving against his made him realize the undeniable reality of the moment.

They stood together in the garden, reminiscent of the one back in Wonju, now a decade later. The setting around them seemed to echo the past, bringing them finally close after so much time had passed.
In that suspended moment, the air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers, the soft rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze, and the distant melodies of birdsong. The world around them seemed to hush, granting them a private sphere where their connection unfolded.

Hyeongwon's mind raced with a whirlwind of emotions—confusion, disbelief, and an unexpected stirring of longing. His hand trembled slightly as it hesitated before tentatively reaching to cup her cheek, the touch both tender and hesitant.

The culmination of all the pent-up frustration from years past exploded in the kiss, threatening to engulf Hyeongwon entirely. It began tentatively, a slow and almost uncertain meeting of lips. But as they surrendered to each other's embrace, the kiss evolved, deepening with an intensity that mirrored the depth of their connection.
Hyeongwon found himself growing accustomed to the sensation of Eunbyeol against him, as if she were crafted specifically to fit perfectly within his grasp. There was a startling familiarity in the way she melded into his embrace, leaving the marquess bewildered yet undeniably captivated.

With each passing moment, his desire to savor her grew more urgent. He refused to let this fleeting encounter slip away. As their kiss intensified, Hyeongwon's desperation was matched by the fervor with which he sought her, his arms enveloping her slender waist, drawing her closer to him in a gesture of unyielding longing.
Only the necessity of air eventually forced them to break apart, their breaths mingling as they gazed at each other, the air around them charged with unspoken desires and the weight of their shared history.

Even after their lips parted, Hyeongwon remained close to Eunbyeol, their breaths mingling in the charged air. He couldn't discern the beginning of his own breath or where hers ended. Unconsciously, he pressed his forehead against hers, his voice barely a whisper against her rosy lips.

"This was a mistake."

The words fell from his lips like a feeble attempt to deny the overwhelming truth. He tried to convince himself that what had transpired between them was wrong—that the feeling of completeness she brought was an illusion, and that imagining a future with her was nothing but a fanciful dream. Hyeongwon lied to himself once again, attempting to suppress the emotions that threatened to consume him, even as he held the woman who was both his desire and his torment.

In that fragile moment of denial, he clung to the façade of rationality, despite the undeniable pull of their connection. But deep down, he knew that their encounter had awakened something profound within him, something he couldn't easily dismiss.
✿ oh bitna 2 weeks ago
@✿ moon hyeongwon Bitna stood before the Moon’s prestigious Estate, dressed in a formal military man’s navy blue uniform she had initially ‘borrowed’ (stole) from her older brother, Sejin, as she altered it to fit her petite figure perfectly. Ever since her engagement with Lord Seol has made Hanseong news, it has certainly become exceedingly difficult for Lady Oh to leave the Oh’s Estate on her own accord.

Astounded by the sight of the luxurious home to the Moon’s, Bitna slightly cocked her head to the side as her raven curls effortlessly draped over her slender shoulders, and from behind her elegant form Bitna intertwined her skinny fingers together as she continued to gaze upon the estate in a dreamful daze.

When in reality — she had been plotting an idea in her mind to ‘abduct’ her dearest little brother, Moon Hyeongwon, from the comfort of his own home in hopes he’d join her for a day out, exploring the glorious City of Hanseong together.

The cunning Marchioness turned her attention towards the gates of the Moon’s Estate, observing the level of security the Moon’s had put in place to guard their lovely home from intruders, and since Bitna had took it upon herself to disguise herself in men’s clothing, if she were to appear before the guards with her disguise, it would definitely rise suspicions.

“If I cannot enter by simply walking through the estate’s doors…” Bitna mumbles to herself as she trails off in quietude, retreating her gaze to glance upon the estate’s wall. The young woman counted in her mind, how many steps would it take to race up the wall in order for her to safely guarantee her entrance into the Moon’s home?

Bitna settled on an estimated number, “Oh dear heavenly father, please forgive me for the sin I am about to commit, because certainly, this is treason.” Reaching to the side of Bitna’s hip, she took out the grappling hook she had brought along in incase this would be the rash decision she had to make.

Lady Oh took a quick glance towards the gates of the estate to ensure she had remained undetected by the guards, and once she was certain she was safe, with a powerful throw Bitna swiftly aimed the grappling hook in the direction she had wanted and prayed one chance would be all it takes to secure its hold.

Now locked in a secure hold, Bitna roughly yanked on the rope a few times to make sure it was safely intact before she started to climb her way up. After confirming its hold, Lady Bitna then begined to make swift up the wall efficiently. The higher she had gotten up from off the ground below, her heart raced a beat faster, although her adrenaline moved steadily, she was worried she’d fall if she wasn’t careful with her steps.
Soon reaching its peak, Bitna fell to her knees for a moment as she rested atop the wall for a moment to catch her breath. If word were to get out that the Marchioness of The Oh’s Household had sneaked into another yangban family’s home with a proper granted entrance, this would surely turn into the scandal of the century.

Before the young woman could continue her scheme she made sure to loosen her hook and left no trace behind to reveal that she had been there at all. Bita straightened herself into a steady posture, readjusting the grappling hook back in place alongside her curved waist, she overlooked the entire serenity of the Moon’s breathtaking estate. It was certainly different in its own richness compared to the Oh’s. Although this could condone her to a severe punishment, it was certainly a sight to see.

Just then, Bitna captures the sight of a familiar face. One she knew all too well, and what are the odds that it just-so-happens to be the one person she had planned to come see. The Oh Marchioness wore a smile of relief over her angelic features as she found enlightenment in the fact that she did not need to struggle any further to see her dearest, little brother.

“Marquess Moon,” the young woman called out towards the gentleman in a cherry tone, certainly pleased to see the young Lord after so long, “it has truly been a long time. May I acquire a bit of your time, if you are not too busy. The City lights of Hanseong’s beauty yearns to be appreciated.” Crossing her arms one over the other, Bitna pressed her arms up against her petite as she met the gaze of her dear old friend. Completely oblivious to his dumbfoundment.

@✿ moon hyeongwon ❝because I cannot stand. . .seeing you like this. why can’t you be more. . .passive and non-caring as you usually are?❞

what did hyeongwon truly want — despise her or pity her? his words were ambiguous at best for he would insult her first then say such things with a softness she could not place. it seemed that even he, himself, was not even sure of what he was feeling, not that eunbyeol minded. she just found everything quite disconcerting.

the emotions passed by the man’s face so fleetingly, they were difficult to grasp at a glance but the longest that had stayed on his visage was that of frustration and vexation — on what exactly? her very presence? she had merely been invited to his home, had visited for his mother and not for him. yet, even as she did not actively seek him out, he looked for ways to irk her once more, choosing to provoke her with the most hurtful of words that cut through her like a very sharp knife.

“i ruined it? i came here first in case you have forgotten. you were the one who found me here, not the other way around.”

eunbyeol continued to peer up at him with a defiance that even the most rebellious of gods could contest with, denying the softness that has replaced the steely gaze that he once had. their proximity and the intensity of his stare were all-too familiar, a reminder of the incident that had transpired within his office, one that she had instigated but he had taken bait of. only this time, it was not within any enclosed space.

they were out in the open, with the possibility of being seen by anyone who decided to pry at this very moment.

but eunbyeol would not let him win and despite the gnawing ache on her chest, one that only surfaced in his midst, she stood her ground, clenching her teeth as she continued to speak of her ire, “i demand you to shut up, moon hyeongwon. i do not gravitate into your orbit and i will never —”

❝and yet, here we are again, so close.❞

it had been too late. eunbyeol should have gotten away, her heel and deny hyeongwon’s presence once more. yet, she had allowed herself to be caught in this confusing web that was his very existence, merely gasping in shock as his arms wound against her smaller frame. stunned, she could only stare at him with furrowed brows, her gaze attempting a search into the depths of his being. her heart raced erratically within the confines of her chest and the once unrelenting heaviness that she felt was replaced by a warmth that she could not place, one that mirrored the intensity of his gaze on hers as he peered down on her.

in that very moment, eunbyeol numbed, her thoughts devoid of any coherency that she once had.

perhaps, it was due to a sudden rush of frustration that had had her in a daze, that had her confusing her actions for another, for instead of pushing the man away, she had pulled him close. eunbyeol gripped hyeongwon’s durumagi by the collar and before her mind could even protest, it had been filled by the taste of his lips on hers, the feeling of his warm skin underneath the pads of her fingers.

underneath the old tree that was reminiscent of wonju’s finer one, eunbyeol’s walls shattered, revealing the feelings of the past that she tried so hard to dampen with hatred and disgust towards the man whose tiers relentlessly sought her own.

@✿ geum eunbyeol Hyeongwon lets out an incredulous laugh

"If there's one thing I understand, it's that you, like myself, struggle to grasp the true essence of love. Yes, I indulge in the company of women who catch my eye. No one impedes me; they willingly seek my affection."

His voice took on a defensive edge as he stepped closer, the book in his grasp clutched so tightly that his knuckles paled. It was rare for him to be provoked like this; normally indifferent to others' opinions, he found himself unexpectedly agitated. Known for his romantic exploits, he had never truly contemplated his actions. Was he trying to fill an emotional void? Who was Eunbyeol to pass judgment?

"You're no different from the rest—just another woman. Do you truly believe you're exceptional enough to comprehend the love you claim to know?"

“Because I cannot stand …seeing you like this. Why can’t you be more..passive. and non caring as you usually are?” The Marquess detected the weighty emotions that Eunbyeol seemed to be concealing. Yet, he swiftly buried any hint of empathy under the fury ignited by the Marchioness. Her words sliced through him, exposing every flaw he had grown to despise about himself.

"I find it rather amusing that you harbor such grand delusions that led you to dissolve your betrothal to Jaehoon. You were merely a child then—how could you have considered marrying my brother, who was already an adult? I cannot fathom the idea of you becoming my sister, then or now."

Hyeongwon had never paused to ponder why this notion vexed him so deeply. His frustration manifested visibly, his brows furrowing and his lips curling into a sarcastic smirk. She indulged in fantasies, dreaming of a fairy tale where someone would reciprocate her affections. The Marquess had long understood that such idealism would remain just that—fantasy, especially for individuals like them.

He paused momentarily, considering her obliviousness to reality and the harsh truths of their world. Despite his disdain for her unrealistic dreams, a part of him felt a twinge of sympathy—a recognition of shared illusions shattered by the harsh realities of their social station and circumstances.

A garden that she loved so dearly?
Hyeongwon was acutely aware that the garden of the Moon estate in Hanseong mirrored their garden in Wonju down to the smallest detail. It was a haunting reminder of their lost friendship, a bond severed by his own regrettable words and actions. Sometimes, as he strolled through those familiar paths, he couldn't help but despise himself for the sentiments that lingered—a wish to rewind time and undo the mistakes that had shattered their relationship.

In quiet moments, Hyeongwon would ponder the what-ifs, imagining how different things might have been if he and Eunbyeol had remained close friends. Would their lives have unfolded in a more harmonious way? Would he have avoided the bitterness that now tainted their interactions?
But these musings were futile. He knew deep down that it was too late to amend the past. The garden, with its echoes of nostalgia and regret, served as a constant reminder of irreversible choices and lost opportunities.

"You've ruined it for yourself by coming here, Eunbyeol."

As anger surged through him, Hyeongwon realized with a pang of familiarity that he was trapped in the same predicament they had faced a month ago in the records room. She stood close, her eyes holding his gaze, and despite his initial fury, he found himself unable to look away.
Suddenly, the storm of anger and irritation in his chest dissipated, replaced by a swirling mix of warmth, curiosity, and an inexplicable sensation he couldn't quite grasp. She was supposed to be his adversary, the thorn in his side, and yet...
Yet, his heart raced once more.

"you are a despicable man and the very thought of you haunts me like a nightmare i could never wake up from."

"And yet, you always seem to gravitate back into my orbit,"
Hyeongwon murmured, his tone softened as he gazed down at her face. He could have sworn he saw a flush on her cheeks, perhaps from anger, but in that moment, bathed in the gentle sunlight, he found himself speechless once again. He was supposed to harbor resentment toward her, yet he couldn't summon that emotion. Instead, memories flooded back—moments when he had stolen glances at her, moments that now left him feeling bewildered.

In a haze of confusion, Hyeongwon loosened his grip on the book he had been clutching too tightly and instead wrapped his arm around her slender waist, drawing her closer.
"And yet, here we are again, so close," he said, his eyes searching hers for answers.

As their proximity intensified, Hyeongwon felt a swirl of conflicting emotions—a desire to understand this unexpected connection, a longing to unravel the complexities between them that defied logic. In that fleeting moment, everything else faded away, leaving only the enigma of their shared history and the unspoken tension that now hung in the air between them.

@✿ moon hyeongwon despite the beginnings of a turbulent storm within her, eunbyeol chose to remain silent. she merely chewed on her lip to prevent herself from becoming more irate by the second, choosing to ignore his words and treating them as background noise as she stooped to sit on her heels to admire the greenery. perhaps, she merely wanted to enjoy the afternoon after seeing his mother — that, or the flowers were a more important specimen than the sorry excuse of a man who is named moon hyeongwon.

however, ignoring such a prominent figure in her life proved to be quite difficult time and time again, especially if he was like a very annoying fly, buzzing into her ear incessantly, awaiting to be squashed. and if he was, indeed, one — eunbyeol would be gracious enough to give him what he wanted: a good argument. for it seemed to her that he was craving it, craving her attention.

it was laughable. was it not him who chose to pointedly ignore her arrival just this morning?

eunbyeol rose, finally turning around to address the very man who grated on her nerves. she peered up at him in askance, daring him to speak against the words that left her lips. "and what of it? what if i am falling in love? with a man such as he, i do not doubt that it is difficult to find myself harboring feelings towards him soon. but ah —" the marchioness
laughed, crossing her arms. "— you could not possibly fathom the very concept of love, could you? is that why you go around and any woman who strikes your fancy? are you sour because none of them ever returned your feelings?"

❝nobody cares eunbyeol. the world doesn't revolve— ❞

"nobody cares?!" she scoffed, disbelief painting her face as the mirthless laugh left her rosy tiers. "— and yet, here you are, mocking me and reminding me again of a situation i did not wish to be found in. why does it bother you so? why did you follow me here, moon hyeongwon?"

the storm that was merely brewing in her was now becoming so tumultuous that her gaze was beginning its attempts to pin him down, to root him to the ground as she approached him like a predator out to hunt its prey. she was unwavering as she moved closer, much like how she had done back in the archives weeks ago. yet, despite her scathing words, the familiar dull ache that had once abated returned fully, now taking her by the throat and squeezing it tightly, she could forget to breathe if she was not aware of it so.

his reminder of a decade-long memory that she had supposedly forgotten did not help her either, and the emotions of her childlike countenance rushed through her like a very violent wave. but such a reminder in a place that resembled the very garden where they parted ways was quite ed in essence. eunbyeol suddenly felt nauseated; she did not deserve this.

still, she was as defiant as he as she continued to respond to his vexations in kind. "i do not belong here but i could have been. i could have married your brother if not for his. . .desire to love another. i could have been here standing under this very tree as your equal and i could have been your sister-in-law even if we both know how much you despised such an idea." she sneered at him, almost baring her teeth as her jaw hardened in indignation."i am only here to admire an imitation of the garden i loved so dearly — now you have ruined it for me just like what you have done to my memories of your garden back in wonju."

hyeongwon's words did cut through her sharply like a knife, like broken glass, and if she was any more fragile, she could swear that she could bleed, could shed tears for a man who deserved none of them. so why was she wasting her time trying to stand her ground before him? why did he always rile her up and she, allowing himself to get through her?

perhaps in her anger, she did not notice that she finally stood so close, her arms almost against his chest, their faces a few breadths apart. but eunbyeol seemed satisfied. in this way, she could spat at him if he tried to speak once more, could she not?

"you are a despicable man and the very thought of you haunts me like a nightmare i could never wake up from."

@✿ geum eunbyeol Geum Eunbyeol's mere presence never failed to ignite a storm of irritation within Hyeongwon's very being. The way she lingered about his home, audaciously accusing him of nosiness for simply walking into their own garden, was quintessential of the marchioness. In that moment, he found himself grappling with a potent sense of déjà vu, a sensation that seemed to envelop him like a haunting mist.

He wanted to harbor his usual resentment towards her, to allow the familiar currents of animosity to take hold, but something within him was preoccupied with this eerie familiarity. As he clutched the book tighter, he defiantly lifted his chin, as if daring the unsettling memories to resurface and provide him with the elusive answers he sought.

"Nosy in my own home? Are you quite right in the head, Eunbyeol?" Hyeongwon's smirk betrayed his exasperation as he fell back on the one defense mechanism he could rely on in her presence: defiance, barbed retorts, anything to mirror the frustration she effortlessly stirred within him.

"Why the jubilation at Mother's summons? Shouldn't you be sipping tea with your future mother-in-law instead?" His tone dripped with sarcasm as he casually shifted his gaze past her to the tree in the distance. Memories of a decade past flooded his mind, a time when they had found themselves in a strangely familiar scenario—only then, they had stood side by side before everything ultimately fell apart, united by similar predicaments. Eunbyeol was promised to another, once more.

The irony of their roles now, standing at opposite poles of circumstance, was not lost on Hyeongwon. He felt a pang of empathy, masked behind a façade of disdain. How many times would fate twist their paths, entwining their lives in such tangled webs?

But now, he finds himself indifferent, detached from the emotions that once held sway over him. Geum Eunbyeol had become akin to a phantom, a fleeting specter that occasionally grazed the deepest recesses of his mind. She was simply Geum Eunbyeol—nothing more, nothing less.

The dull ache in his chest, triggered by thoughts of her marrying another, stemmed from the unresolved misunderstandings of years gone by. They had never truly addressed their rift, opting instead for a silent agreement to cease communication indefinitely.
As time flowed on, Hyeongwon mastered the art of transforming any lingering positive sentiments into disdain and apathy. The years served as a chisel, gradually carving away remnants of attachment until he was left with an indifference that masked the vestiges of what once was.

And yet there are times when he would question himself and these are one of those moments.
The marquess shoots her a pointed look before taking one step forward, stubbornly denying whatever emotions stirred in him.

"Are you here to revel in your engagement again? To boast about how wonderfully it's going, how deeply in love you've suddenly become?" Hyeongwon's voice dripped with venom as he spoke, hoping to inflict pain upon Eunbyeol.

"Nobody cares, Eunbyeol. The world doesn't revolve around you." He longed for a reaction, determined that if she wouldn't smile for him anymore, he would at least evoke the response he desired.

"Leave you be? Perhaps you've forgotten your place, Eunbyeol," Hyeongwon retorted, his tone laced with thinly veiled resentment.

"This is not your estate. You do not belong here." The words felt like shards of glass slipping from his tongue, cutting deeper into the fragile bond that once tied them together.

He wanted to provoke her, to witness her ire, maybe even her hatred. Yet with each bitter word, he felt a pang of regret, as if he were inflicting wounds upon himself. When had their relationship turned so adversarial? It seemed as though they had both actively dug trenches between them, widening the chasm that once held their closeness.

The gap between them felt insurmountable now, filled with unspoken grievances and misunderstandings. Hyeongwon wondered if they would ever find their way back to the ease and warmth they once shared, or if they were condemned to this new, icy standoff.

@✿ moon sejoon “I know and I believe you. Somehow I knew in my heart that you didn’t forget about me.” She said, reassuring her long-time friend that all was forgiven. Learning that Sejoon herself that she was to stay and not leave again kept Mina at ease. She mouthed a faint apology as Sejoon wiped her tears, giving her a small nod when horse riding was mentioned. “I’d love that, Bonhwa cannot wait to meet you. I’ve told him all about you... unfortunately, I don’t know what he thinks of you since he is a… horse.” Mina said chuckling as she straightened up and put on a smile.

“Shall we gather some things to eat perhaps? It seems like it'll be a long talk since you technically owe me an entire lifetime, young miss!” She teased while linking her arm around Sejoon’s and walking alongside her, not noticing if Lady Moon had already returned to her quarters or wherever she’d decided to wander off. It was still quite strange that she was there but it was pleasant to see her, she'll have to ask Sejoon why she was even there in the first place. However the main goal of exchanging letters and such had shifted once Sejoon had reappeared. Someone integral in her girlhood was returning— secretly, she needed that. There was only so much Mina could keep in and she needed someone to speak to that wasn’t just her horse.

Mina couldn’t help but be saddened briefly by the mention of ‘the three of them,’ Saena, had passed a little before Sejoon ran off and it wasn’t the same since. They were like the three musketeers; always together, attached at the hips almost as everyone would have said. Now that her brothers were to enter a life of marriage, she couldn’t help but feel… lonely. Even if her brothers never made her feel that way one bit, perhaps the need to speak to someone else was something she missed most— or she would most likely lose her mind. She probably might have and she didn’t know it yet. “Would it be much if I asked you to come spend the night at our estate? Just like before?” She asked feeling quite nostalgic, hoping she'd agree.

@✿ moon hyeongwon eunbyeol listened in amusement as the dowager duchess rambled on with her musings, her endless complaints about her sons’ behaviors. despite the difference in their titles, the marchioness understood where she was coming from. after all, the house needed another heir so soon and well, neither sons were getting any younger.

“you speak so highly of me, eomeoni. it makes me think that if my lord was still courting me, you would have already met my brother to ask for my hand once again.”

the smile on her face as she returned the woman’s concerns with a jest of her own was all-knowing and full of pride. it had already been evident that moon hyang only wanted the best for her children — and who would be a better choice other than her? yet, while the idea of marrying into a good family such as hers was a good proposition, there was the matter of being amidst the presence of an archenemy. her thoughts lingered briefly towards hyeongwon and how he had pointedly told her as a child that he wanted none of her traces in their family. . .

. . .but the way he had almost pressed his lips against her own on that humid afternoon in his office’s archive was contrary to the way he so continuously ignored her presence. he was truly confusing, a conundrum she could not solve.

the very thought of him irritated her again.

thankfully, the woman before her was too engrossed in their meeting, failing to notice eunbyeol’s brief trance, and as the topic shifted from matters of engagements to her business endeavors, the younger of the two slowly felt her ire being washed away.

their conversation droned throughout the day and into the early afternoon, just when the sun’s golden rays began to shine through the half-opened windows of the private space. eunbyeol politely declined moon hyang’s invitation to extend her stay, giving the elder a brief hug and leaving promises to visit wonju once in awhile.

as she exited the residence through another walkway, the estate’s garden caught the marchioness eye. her steps ceased, eyes widening in bewilderment. before her very eyes is an imitation of the moon’s gardens back in wonju. she would know; she loved that place. it was a favorite of hers when she had still been a frequent visitor of the estate. before she could stop herself, eunbyeol’s feet moved on their own accord, taking hastened and measured steps through the greenery and towards the familiar looming tree in the middle of the garden.

“lady geum?” her nobi called in askance.

eunbyeol waved a hand in dismissal. “you can go ahead, seol-ah. i just want to check some things for myself.”

the lady was correct in her assumption. the tree was, indeed, the very same one back in wonju. did a sapling grow this big during the times that she had refused to visit this place?

as she quietly mused, eunbyeol failed to notice hyeongwon’s approach, only having been surprised at the sound of his voice behind her.

❝you seem a bit far from the estate entrance. are you perhaps lost?❞

why is it that whenever he opened his mouth, eunbyeol’s immediate reaction was to argue back, to sneer? the girl sighed in exasperation, rolling her eyes and slightly turned, just enough for him to see the annoyance on her face.

“i am not but what is it to you, lord moon? a nosy one, you are.” she shook her head in disapproval at his prying and with a dismissing wave, turned to admire the bushes of violets and cordelias that lay strewn around the tree’s roots. “leave me be, now — or do you desire to spark some rumors for the ton to feed on once more?”

@✿ geum eunbyeol Hyeongwon remained rooted in place, captivated by their conversation unfolding from the secrecy of his hidden corner. The sound of her laughter, like a melodic symphony, washed over him, though he dared not acknowledge its effect, even to himself.
With rapt attention, he absorbed their exchange of pleasantries. His mother's direct and pointed questions towards Eunbyeol never failed to evoke a sense of secondhand embarrassment. Hyeongwon's brows furrowed as he overheard the marchioness speaking ill of him to his own mother. The urge to storm into the lounge and defend his honor pulsed within him, yet he knew it would be futile. Both women possessed a power that could easily bring him to his knees — his mother, who saw through him, and the marchioness, who confronted him at every opportunity.

"Ah, forgive me, dear," the elder lady chuckled lightly, her tone carrying a hint of jest as she responded to Eunbyeol's witty remarks about Hyeongwon. However, her laughter was followed by a weary sigh, audible enough for even the Marquess to catch from his vantage point.

"I must just be so eager to ask you to join our family that I would offer Hyeongwon," she continued, her expression turning momentarily rueful. "But truly, I am at wit's end with my sons. I just do not know what I shall do to get them engaged! They seem so lackadaisical about finding suitable matches, and it pains me to see them miss out on such good opportunities."
The duchess dowager took a delicate sip of her tea, hoping to soothe the impending headache brought on by her sons' apparent lack of effort.

"I understand, Byeol-ah," she nodded sympathetically, her gaze drifting off momentarily in thought. "Hyeongwon can be quite the troublemaker. While he seems to have curbed such behaviors recently, I worry they may resurface like an unbreakable cycle. It shouldn't be so difficult for him to find a lady of your caliber to settle down with, should it? Perhaps I should delve into the prospect of finding him a suitable match once more."
Her words seemed to veer more into a self-directed monologue than a direct conversation with the young marchioness seated before her, prompting Hyeongwon to inwardly roll his eyes in irritation at the blatant discussion of his future prospects without his presence or input.

Eunbyeol's words echoed in Hyeongwon's mind, 'And will he want me, a spinster?' Why would she doubt herself? If she harbored such disdain for him, she could simply declare her disinterest outright, as she often did.
Hyeongwon crossed his arm against his chest, the other elbow propped against it as he rested his chin on the back of his hand in deep contemplation. Who wouldn't want Geum Eunbyeol? She was as exasperatingly radiant as the summer sun, as enchantingly beautiful and yet as ephemeral as the last blooms of spring transitioning into summer. Who wouldn't desire her as a bride?

Certainly not him.

"My dear, why would you say that? My son would be fortunate if you so much as glanced in his direction," the duchess dowager remarked, her smile gentle as she poured another cup of tea for Eunbyeol, swiftly steering the conversation away from potentially sensitive topics. Her inquiries veered towards safer subjects, such as Eunbyeol's businesses and Seongnam.

Having heard enough, Hyeongwon quietly slipped away before the meeting could conclude, not wishing to be caught by either of them, or worse, both. He retreated to his study once more, his steps swift and purposeful.
Browsing the shelves, he absentmindedly retrieved books he remembered to be Eunbyeol's favorites from their time in Wonju. She had always possessed a penchant for literature that diverged from the norm expected of girls her age. Hyeongwon couldn't help but chuckle as he leafed through a volume on poisonous flowers, recalling Eunbyeol's childhood threats of gifting him such blooms. Though it wasn't until recently, during the summer flower festival, that she had actually followed through with her playful menace, sending him a bouquet of baby's breath.

The marquess’ study was situated adjacent to the meticulously crafted garden, a homage to the Moons’ ancestral estate in Wonju. Every detail, from the seasonal blooms to the majestic tree at its heart, had been recreated with painstaking precision.
Clutching the book on poisonous flowers tightly, Hyeongwon felt the urge to escape the confines of his study and seek solace amidst the tranquility of the garden. Perhaps the gentle breeze outside would offer respite from the whirlwind of thoughts that tormented him.

As he stepped into the garden, his eyes still fixed on the pages of the book, Hyeongwon was momentarily startled by the sudden appearance of Eunbyeol. Her hurried footsteps seemed to suggest she was fleeing from something, adding a layer of intrigue to the already tumultuous atmosphere.

Intrigued by her abrupt presence, the marquess decided to follow her, his curiosity piqued by her urgency. Only when she paused beneath the shade of the towering tree did Hyeongwon come to a halt, maintaining a respectful distance of ten steps between them. The scene unfolding before him felt eerily reminiscent of their childhood days spent in the Moon estate in Wonju.

"You seem a bit far from the estate entrance. Are you perhaps lost?"

@✿ moon hyeongwon the maroon palanquin landed with a thud before the pristine wooden gates of the moon estate. geum eunbyeol alighted it with much poise, her half-upped hair cascading down her shoulders like a black curtain merely held in place by a golden daenggi. with a finesse of a refined yangban woman, she had lifted her moss green chima before ascending the front steps of the said residence, collecting little to no dust at the seams.

the marchioness had received a letter earlier that week; the moon matriarch had requested her audience upon her visit to hanseong. who was she to decline? moon hyang had been very welcoming of her despite failing to wed jaehoon and if there was one thing that eunbyeol knew not to do, it was to disrespect a woman’s graces. above all, however, excitement had bubbled within her upon reading the missive. the woman was like a second mother to her. eunbyeol missed her quite so, enough to have her leaving her family's own estate in haste after a light meal for breakfast.

but perhaps, even a light meal could still make one nauseated enough, could it not?

eunbyeol's eyes widened, briefly feeling lightheaded upon reaching the estate's inner entrance, having not expected to see moon hyeongwon lingering about. all of a sudden, flashes of what had occurred in that archive flooded into memory but before eunbyeol could even frown his way and blame him for the dizziness that it caused her, he was quick to bypass her, crossing her path without even sparing her a glance. this would normally irk the marchioness to no end but hyeongwon's blatant disregard of her appearance caused nothing but a little pang to her chest. eunbyeol frowned. there it was again — a gnawing pain she never knew how to get rid of.

she hated it. it was all moon hyeongwon's fault.

rolling her eyes, she turned to walk in the opposite direction and towards the all-too familiar lounge of estate, her visage never betraying any hint of disappointment at his ignorance. her face broke into a bright smile, however, at the sight of the house's matriarch. eunbyeol hastened her steps to meet the old woman, bowing before her daintily contrary to her countenance.

"you look as lovely as the first day i met you, madame." it was true. though the fine lines on the woman's face were tell-tale signs of her age, moon hyang looked younger than her years. even moreso when she chuckled gleefuly as she held eunbyeol by the shoulders, patting the younger woman's arms gently in delight.

"you have grown into a fine one, byeol-ah," she mused, leading the younger into the room. "come, i have jasmine tea. i presume it's still your favorite? i recall the first time you've tasted it — in this very room, no less. you quietly poured a third cup until your mother insisted into bringing a sample home." eunbyeol shied away at the mention of such a fond memory, stifling an embarrassed giggle as she followed the older into the room

both women shared a quiet time, merely enjoying their tea before the topic of her engagement came to surface. eunbyeol knew this was coming; this was, after all, the reason for her visit to the manor. a sudden wave of dread chilled the blood rushing through her veins. the jasmine tea on her tongue suddenly did not taste so palatable.

"your hearing is still perfectly intact, madame. i, indeed, am betrothed to the second son. i have no doubts tha you have heard of general park yeongho?" her voice was quite. . .monotonous as she spoke. however, she could not help it — she had mixed feelings for the betrothal, after all. "he's overseas currently."

❝you and hyeongwon used to spend so much time together, didn't you byeol-ah?❞

eunbyeol’s gaze flickered briefly, catching the dowager’s own, but the younger of the two quickly looked away, seemingly embarrassed at being affected by the mere mention of her son’s name. the marchioness took a sip from her teacup as a distraction and as the warm liquid traversed down , her forgotten feelings for the man dampened into a mere ache that settled rather heavily in her chest. unknowingly, her lips upturned into a rather wry smile, but she knew that the duchess dowager might catch on soon. before her, eunbyeol was an open-book no matter how hard the young lady tried to conceal such things. eventually, moon hyang might see through the cracks of such a little smile and see the lingering sadness behind it.

“hyeongwon and i —” even the mention of his name was enough to leave her heart stinging but eunbyeol clenched her teeth; her emotions would not get the best of her today. “— i believe it is best to leave everything as it is. we're adults now and. . .i believe we are not the same children that we once were.”

as quickly as it appeared, the simper on her face dissipated, replaced by the thinning of her lips around the rim of the cup. eunbyeol shrugged, continuing as nonchalantly as possible even as she adamantly avoided the older woman's prying stare, "and eomeoni, you would allow me to be with a man such as he?" she playfully pursed her lips gently into a pout after awhile, finally garnering the courage to meet her gaze, but even as the dowager duchess laughed at her ministrations, she could not shake the feeling that she had given the woman such hints of what has transpired between them back in the royal assembly. "after all, i believe nothing goes through you unchecked. you would know how he is, madam, and i know you've heard this through hearsay as well."

❝ — and will he want me, a spinster?❞

the thought was fleeting but it surprised eunbyeol nonetheless, almost dropping the teacup in surprise. thankfully, she was quick to lower the ceramic albeit with shaky hands and as she waited for the duchess to notice, the young lady bit the insides of her cheek, willing the unwarranted thought away.

@✿ geum eunbyeol [End of July, 1869]

The scorching summer heat, echoed by the raucous chorus of cicadas and the rich fragrance of blooming flowers, draped the Moon Estate in Hanseong. Excitement crackled through the estate as news spread of an impending visitor. The esteemed matriarch of the Moon family had graced the town with her presence, extending a personal invitation to Geum Eunbyeol to join her at the estate for heartfelt congratulations on the Marchioness’ recent engagement. If only Hyeongwon had been privy to this information sooner, he wouldn't have stumbled upon a wide-eyed Eunbyeol standing at the entrance of their residence.

Without so much as a glance in her direction, Hyeongwon pivots on his heel and strides purposefully toward his study. He entertains the fleeting hope that by ignoring her presence, he might spare himself the torment of her memory. Yet, as he steps into the sanctuary of his study, his gaze falls upon the remnants of the floral wrapping from that unforgettable occasion. The once pristine paper now crumpled, yet he cannot bring himself to discard it, placing it tenderly atop the volumes she once cherished.

His fingers trace the delicate lines of the hand-drawn flowers adorning the edges, a testament to her artistic flair. However, he forcibly wrenches his mind from dwelling further, focusing instead on a familiar tome resting on his shelf. He flips through its well-worn pages, though each word seems to blur together in his mind. Realizing the futility of attempting to distract himself, he slams the book shut, a cloud of fine dust dispersing into the air.
With a sharp exhale, he replaces the book on its shelf, his curiosity regarding his mother and Eunbyeol's conversation gnawing at him relentlessly. Resigned, he departs his study, the weight of uncertainty heavy upon his shoulders once more.

His steps led him inevitably to the lounge, a space reminiscent of the one in Wonju where the Moons and Geums often convened. Yet, this time, it was a more intimate affair, with only his mother and Eunbyeol occupying the room. Moon Hyang and Eunbyeol sat across from each other, separated by a table, engaged in what he assumed would be a conversation of great importance.

As Hyeongwon hesitated at the threshold, a wave of self-awareness washed over him. Why did he feel compelled to eavesdrop? What purpose would it serve, other than to potentially jeopardize his dignity? If caught, how could he possibly explain his intrusion? These thoughts plagued him as he pivoted on his heel, positioning his back against the thin wall that divided the lounge from the outside world.
With a sigh, he activated the fan he had retrieved from his study, its gentle hum providing a comforting backdrop against the sweltering heat. Leaning against the wall, he resigned himself to wait, his mind awash with a myriad of unanswered questions, his heart heavy with anticipation.

"Ah, Eunbyeol, it's truly a pleasure to have you here," Duchess Dowager Moon exclaimed, her eyes alight with genuine warmth at the sight of Eunbyeol. With a graceful gesture, she extended her hand towards the teapot, poised to pour her guest a refreshing drink.

"It appears congratulations are in order," Duchess Dowager Moon remarked with a gentle smile, her tone carrying a hint of curiosity. "I've heard whispers of your engagement to one of the Parks' sons." With practiced grace, she poured herself a cup of the fragrant jasmine tea that had been prepared in anticipation of Eunbyeol's visit, taking a delicate sip as she awaited her response.
The Duchess Dowager had always taken a liking on Eunbyeol. Deeming it a waste that her engagement with her eldest son ended just as swiftly as it was arranged.

"It's a pity indeed that you didn't marry into the Moons, I have a second son you know?" Duchess Dowager Moon mused, her tone tinged with a hint of regret. "You and Hyeongwon used to spend so much time together, didn't you, Byeol-ah?" She didn't shy away from addressing the matter directly, a trait that often intimidated others but never Eunbyeol. To the duchess dowager, Eunbyeol embodied the ideal daughter-in-law—poised, elegant, and intelligent.

“I jest, please be at ease.” The duchess dowager smiles slightly, awaiting the young lady’s response.

@✿ go mina Sejoon is taken aback by Mina's warm embrace, her heart swelling with a mixture of emotions at the sight of her long-lost friend. It feels like a lifetime since they last saw each other, yet in that moment, everything else fades away, and all that matters is the presence of her dear friend.

As Mina pours out her feelings, Sejoon's expression softens, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears. She listens intently, her heart heavy with guilt for causing her friend so much worry and pain. The weight of Mina's words hangs heavy in the air, a silent reminder of the consequences of her actions.

"I'm sorry, Mina," Sejoon murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper as she squeezes her friend's hands in return. "I never meant to cause you any distress. Leaving was... necessary, for reasons I cannot fully explain. But please know that I never forgot about you, not even for a moment."

She takes a deep breath, her resolve strengthening as she meets Mina's gaze with unwavering determination. "I'm back now, and I don't plan on leaving again. You've always been like family to me, Mina, and I cherish our friendship more than words can express."

A small smile tugs at the corners of Sejoon's lips, a glimmer of hope shining in her eyes as she leans in to embrace her friend once more. In that moment, surrounded by the warmth of Mina's embrace, Sejoon knows that no matter what challenges lie ahead, she will always have a loyal friend by her side.

For a few moments, Sejoon pulled away before wiping Mina's tears. "Hey, hey. Don't cry now, I'm here and..." She looks around. "Want to go horse riding with me?" She smiles, "I know a place where we can talk more, you know, the place we three used to hang out?" Sejoon winked.

That place she talked about was just at the vicinity of the Moon estate, where Sejoon, Saena and Mina used to play or tell stories together. A place just beside a creek.

@✿ moon sejoon Lady Moon. She didn’t expect their mother to show up at their estate, in fact she was the last person she’d expect to be here but nonetheless, Mina had a bit of debt to her in a way since losing her mother at a young age, Lady Moon had stepped in to fill in some of the gaps. “Lady Moon, yes it definitely has been. I have been well, thank you. I hope you are too? I’ll be honest, it’s quite a rare sight to see you here. Did I come at bad time?” She asked the elder while returning a polite smile as she twiddled with her fingers that were behind her.

“Mina,” she heard name being called out by an all too familiar voice and whipped her head immediately to its direction. No, could it really be? Her eyes widened with glee as she met the woman halfway, throwing her arms around her and wasting a second more. “It really is you! You’re here, you’re actually here!” She said with tears brimming in her eyes as she was filled with a plethora of emotions; happiness, sadness, a bit of anger too. She was really here, after so long and that was all Mina cared about.

“Where did you go? I was worried about you.. we all were. Please don’t flee like that ever again.” She said as the words kept spewing out of . There was so much to say and do but she didn’t want to overwhelm her long time friend either. She carefully pulled away from the embrace and straightened herself out, taking a deep breath to properly look at the woman before her, a soft smile forming as she saw the girl she knew from her formative years but this time more beautiful than she remembered.

She sniffled once she broke out from her trance, wiping the tears and chuckling at herself as she might have looked like a fool. She was hoping to get pinched somehow as the reality hasn’t sunk in yet. She wasn’t angry with Sejoon, she could never be. She had her reasons for leaving and Mina chose to respect that believing that one day Sejoon would find her way back to her.

“I’m just so glad you’re back, safe and sound.” Mina said while gently holding on to Sejoon’s hands, squeezing them gently too.

@✿ moon jaehoon @✿ moon hyeongwon Sejoon's shoulders tense as Hyeongwon's words cut through the air with a sharpness that stings more than she cares to admit. She had hoped for understanding, for empathy from her brother, but instead, she is met with cold criticism and reproach. His sarcasm only adds insult to injury, mocking her attempts to reconnect with her family after years of solitude and isolation.

Her eyes narrow slightly, a flicker of defiance igniting within her as she meets Hyeongwon's gaze head-on. Despite the pang of disappointment in his words, she refuses to let him see her falter. If anything, his disdain only fuels her determination to stand her ground, to prove that she is not the same naive girl who left Wonju all those years ago.

"Reflect and act my age?" Sejoon's voice carries a hint of bitterness, her tone laced with sarcasm mirroring her brother's. "Funny, coming from the one who always seemed so eager to distance himself from our family's affairs. Or have you conveniently forgotten your own share of rebellious antics?"

Her gaze flickers to Lady Moon, the woman whose disapproval weighs heavy upon her heart. For so long, Sejoon had yearned for her mother's love and acceptance, only to be met with disappointment and indifference. And now, faced with her presence once more, she cannot help but feel a pang of resentment mingled with longing.

But when Lady Moon redirects the conversation to Jaehoon's marital prospects, Sejoon's jaw tightens, her fists clenching reflexively beneath the table. The mention of grandchildren serves as a bitter reminder of Saena's absence, a wound that still festers deep within her soul.

She scoffed and whispers under her breath, "Having grandchildren yet you only have a favored one." Sejoon lets out her emotions control her all these years, no one really cared for her. She's always the one that had been left out.

But Lady Moon had heard her whisper and whipped her head back to Sejoon, "How dare you..." She clenched the hem of her cloth in anger as she heard that to her. "Your attitude towards your own family is caused by your own arrogance, you left willingly and now you have the audacity to return and claim your rights as a member of this family."

"So you would want me to leave and die?" Sejoon snapped back, "Admit it, you never even bothered to find me after I left..." She looked down, "I should have died instead of her."

Then she slowly stood up from the dinner table and starts walking away silently, Sejoon already had accepted that she's the misfortune of this family. She starts walking out of the estate and went somewhere she and Saena used to go.

Though as much as he hated the idea of going on the blind date and liked the idea of defying their mother, he knew that he still somehow had a responsibility to the family that he is a part of so he begrudgingly nods his head as he kept eating.

He would watch the scene in front of him unfold, mildly regretting having brought Sejoon back home anyway with how his sister acted. This was not the Sejoon from all those years ago. Perhaps it is the experiences she gained from her freedom when she ran away, but this would be the last time Hyeongwon would take her attitude. If petty ran in the family, the younger Moon would have gotten the most of it.

It would be Jaehoon’s words that would make him stop eating, put his chopsticks down and instead enjoy watching the exchange that was happening in front of him.

“Jaehoon hyung is finally speaking as himself. By the gods we are so lucky today.”

Hyeongwon remarks, his tone laced with sarcasm yet tinged with a hint of pride. Although he would never openly admit it, there was a sense of satisfaction in seeing his older brother assert himself and speak with the authority befitting the head of the family.

As he observes Jaehoon's newfound confidence, Hyeongwon can't help but feel a swell of admiration for his brother's willingness to stand up for himself. Despite their differences and the occasional friction between them, there is an unspoken bond of solidarity that binds them together as siblings.
Though he may tease and jest, deep down, Hyeongwon harbors a quiet respect for Jaehoon's resilience and determination.

“He is right. And I usually do not agree with Jaehoon hyung but Sejoon you have been gone. And now you’re back with nothing to show for yourself. It is quite shameful don’t you think?”

Hyeongwon pauses, gaze locking with Sejoon. It must have been the hurt that his sister’s words hurtled towards him that made him lose his will to be her only ally.

“You should still somewhat reflect and act your age. It is your first day back and you dare force your wishes upon us? Do you expect us to beg and grovel at your feet?”

He follows it up with sarcastic laughter. Sejoon ran away on her own and came home of her own accord. Surely, she prepared better than to childishly force her wishes upon Jaehoon, Hyeongwon and their mother.

“Enough.”

Lady Moon turns to look at her children, her striking gaze softened with what Hyeongwon thought looked like sadness and longing. Their eyes met and as much as he and his mother disagreed, after all these years, he was just a son who for the most part sought her approval and love. He had missed her. Hyeongwon is reminded of all the times he has neglected to reach out to his mother, allowing the years to pass without so much as a word of acknowledgment or affection. Though he would inquire about her condition through Jaehoon, he realizes now that his passive gestures were not enough to bridge the chasm that separated them.

“Let us talk about better things.” Her voice was calmer as she approached the next topic.

“Jaehoon, do you think you will be getting married this year or next? I am getting older, and I should like to see grandchildren before I pass.” There was no ire or pressure in her voice. Lady Moon truly wondered why none of her children have wedded. The duke was thirty-four and Hyeongwon was twenty-five. Both marrying ages. They both lacked nothing and yet they showed no haste in marriage.

“The political sphere is ever evolving and we could always use new alliances and friends. Despite our house’s long standing neutrality.”

@✿ moon sejoon @✿ moon hyeongwon Jaehoon sat at the dinner table, his fingers gripping the chopsticks with a tension that mirrored the strained atmosphere of the room. His mother's words hung in the air like a heavy fog, her announcement about the upcoming blind dates for the Flower Festival sending a ripple of unease through the already tense gathering.

He glanced at Hyeongwon, noting the subtle interplay of sarcasm and respect in his brother's demeanor as he engaged with their mother. It was a skillful balancing act, one that Jaehoon couldn't help but be astounded at, even as he braced himself for the inevitable fallout.

As their mother revealed her decision to sign them both up for the blind dates, Jaehoon felt a surge of apprehension knotting in the pit of his stomach. He knew he should speak up, assert himself, and refuse to be coerced into something he didn't want.

Taking a deep breath, Jaehoon made a decision. Despite his reservations, he would accept his mother's decision and go along with the blind date. It was a small sacrifice to make for the sake of familial harmony, and perhaps, hopefully, it would even bring some semblance of joy to their strained relationships?

Turning back to his mother, Jaehoon offered a resigned smile. "Mother, I understand your intentions, and I'll go for the blind date. And Hyeongwon, will go along side of me." He could feel the heated stare from Hyeongwon agreed on behalf of his younger brother.

But amidst the chaos and discord, Jaehoon felt the need to intervene. He turned to Sejoon, who was locked in a heated argument with their mother about her uality.

Jaehoon's gaze hardened as he addressed Sejoon, his voice carrying a stern edge. "Sejoon, listen," he began, his tone firm and unwavering. "Whatever you choose to do behind closed doors, away from prying eyes, is your own business. But if I were to hear that you've been seen with another lady in public, behaving inappropriately, I won't tolerate it either."

Jaehoon's expression softened just ever so slightly as he continued, "Our family's values and reputation matter, Sejoon. Whatever decisions you make, they reflect on all of us. You have spent too long being away, you can't expect us to accept everything in one day. I won't stand by and let our family, and what we have built all these years, be dragged through the mud because of you and your Lady's actions."

The Moon estate had long been a sanctuary of tranquility, where the air was often thick with an unspoken understanding between the brothers, Jaehoon and Hyeongwon. Their disagreements were usually fleeting, quickly dissipating as they retreated into the safety of their respective spaces. They were masters of avoidance, adept at sidestepping conflict before it had a chance to escalate.

But the return of Sejoon had shattered the fragile peace that had once reigned within the estate's walls. Her presence, like a gust of wind disrupting the stillness of a calm lake, had stirred up emotions long kept buried, threatening to unravel the carefully constructed facade of harmony.

@✿ go mina As Mina stepped through the gates of the Moon estate, a wave of nostalgia washed over Sejoon, her heart skipping a beat at the sight of her childhood friend after nearly two decades apart. Memories of their carefree days spent exploring the sprawling grounds of the estate flooded her mind, filling her with a bittersweet longing for the innocence of youth.

Despite the passage of time, Mina's presence still radiated the same warmth and kindness that had drawn Sejoon to her all those years ago. She watched with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension as Mina made her way towards the main entrance, her heart pounding in her chest as she awaited their long-awaited reunion.

However, before Sejoon could make her presence known, Lady Moon emerged from the grand entrance of the estate, her imposing figure casting a shadow over the courtyard as she approached Mina with a regal grace. When both twins were gone in different ways, Lady Moon felt nothing but devastation as both of her daughters were gone with the wind the day Saena died and Sejoon left.

She was looking for comfort, and there, Mina was there for her, exchanging letters and Lady Moon starts to treat Mina as her own since her mother passed when Mina was just a little.

"Ah, Mina dear, it's been far too long," Lady Moon greeted her with a polite smile, though there was a hint of formality in her tone that did not go unnoticed by Sejoon. "I trust you are well?"

Sejoon watched from a distance, her heart sinking at the realization that her mother had intercepted Mina's arrival before she could greet her herself. She knew all too well her mother's penchant for control and propriety, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration at being sidelined in this moment.

Nevertheless, she took a deep breath, steeling herself for the encounter ahead. With a determined glint in her eye, she stepped forward, determined to seize the opportunity to reconnect with her childhood friend after so many years apart.

"Mina," she called out, her voice ringing clear across the courtyard as she approached them. "It's been too long."

@✿ moon sejoon Two decades. It had been almost two decades long and Mina still kept counting. It was bad enough knowing her childhood best friend had just up and left but it never faltered her hopes of maybe reuniting with her once again. Apart from her older siblings, Sejoon has a special place in her heart. There was a buzz going around that she might have been spotted around the city, coincidentally, Lady Moon was also at their estate. That was enough to get Mina off her feet and off to their home, somewhat optimistic that her big sister would be there— if not, seeing her mother was just as good since she had become a mother figure for her in some way, at least in her formative years.

Sejoon taught her some things: to be assertive, that it was alright to get scuffed up now and then, and that the outside wasn’t so bad. She was right about that last one. She’d never felt so free from it all. With Hyunjoo out in the great wide somewhere, her mother passing while she was young, and the men in her life battling it out elsewhere; Mina wanted to have her own thing too not to feel left out. Sejoon, and Saena too, helped her with that. She's still very much an introvert, yes but with much more determination in life.

Much to the dismay of her house staff, she insisted on riding her horse to the Moon Estate. This way, she was mentally preparing herself and perhaps, emotionally cushioning herself too just in case so the disappointment wouldn’t hurt so bad. It shouldn’t… right? Nonetheless, she was always full of surprises that little runaway. Mina couldn’t even be mad at her, even if she wanted to. Deep down, Mina knew why she ran away years ago, a part of her didn’t want to believe but maybe it was for the best that time.

“She has to be back. It feels right this time.” She said softly to Bonhwa, her horse that trudged carefully on the cobblestoned roads. She gently brushed her hand on his mane with a smile. “She better be or else she’ll have a lot to answer for, she knows what she did.”

Bonhwa soon came to a halt when she tugged on his lead, she sighed softly once she had arrived, carefully hopping off and leading him into the Moon’s compound, heaving a soft sigh as if hoping the stallion would sympathize with her. “Wish me luck, Bon. Hopefully, I don’t come out with sad tears.”

@✿ moon jaehoon @✿ moon hyeongwon Sejoon's lips curled into a sardonic smirk as she listened to Hyeongwon's words, his reproach stinging like salt on an open wound. She knew she had hurt her younger brother by leaving without a word, but she couldn't bring herself to regret her decision. Not when it meant escaping the suffocating confines of their family's expectations, even if it meant sacrificing her bond with him in the process.

"Ah, my apologies, dear brother," Sejoon retorted, her voice laced with bitter sarcasm. "I must have forgotten to send you a formal invitation to my grand return. How inconsiderate of me."

She met Hyeongwon's knowing look with a defiant glare of her own, her resolve unyielding despite the guilt that gnawed at her heart. She may have been absent for years, but she refused to let her family's judgment dictate her actions any longer.

As their mother's critical gaze fell upon her, Sejoon's jaw clenched with suppressed anger, her patience wearing thin beneath the weight of her mother's expectations. She had long grown tired of being compared to her deceased twin, forced to bear the burden of Saena's memory like a millstone around her neck.

"Spare me your lectures, Mother," Sejoon interjected coldly, her voice devoid of emotion as she met her mother's disappointed gaze head-on. "Saena is dead, and no amount of staring at me as if I were her will bring her back. Stop living in the past and accept that I am not the daughter you wished I would be."

"How dare you say that to your sister--" Lady Moon's rage starts to rise, "She died to save you, and now you're speaking ill of her."

"And whose fault you think to blame for her death? And also the reason why I left from here in the first place?" Sejoon now guilt tripping their own mother. "Stop playing victim, mother, it's obvious already."

Her words hung heavy in the air, the silence that followed thick with tension and unspoken resentment. Sejoon knew she had crossed a line, but she refused to back down, unwilling to let her mother's disapproval dictate her worth any longer.

As their mother's ultimatum regarding the blind dates loomed over them, Sejoon's defiance hardened into resolve, her jaw set in a stubborn line as she met her mother's gaze with unflinching determination.

"I will not be a pawn in your game, Mother," Sejoon declared, her voice firm and unwavering. "I refuse to participate in your charade of forced unions. My life is my own, and I will not allow you to dictate my future any longer."

"I will marry her, and I do not need your approval, I am just informing you that I will marry Aecha and bear no children." She swore. "And if I were to have children... I will raise them equally, without having favorites, just like..." You. In her mind, but she ended her words with, "...Like what we live here."

And as she met her mother's disappointed gaze with a steely glare of her own, Sejoon knew that she would no longer be bound by the chains of her family's expectations. She may have returned to their ancestral home, but she refused to be shackled by their traditions any longer.
