@✿ moon hyeongwon Sejoon arrived at the secluded waterfall northeast of Hanseong, a place where she and Hyeongwon used to spend countless hours together in their youth. The sound of rushing water filled the air, a soothing melody that instantly transported her back to simpler times. She dismounted from Bada, her faithful horse, and tied him to a nearby tree. As she walked towards the familiar spot by the water's edge, she couldn't help but feel a pang of nostalgia.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out two delicate necklaces, one hers and one Saena's, the pendants catching the light in a way that made her heart ache with memories. The necklaces were identical, save for the slight differences that marked each as unique to their owners. Saena’s pendant had a tiny flower engraved on it, a symbol of her gentle nature, while Sejoon’s had a small crescent moon, representing her adventurous spirit.

Sejoon sat down on a smooth rock near the water, letting the sound of the waterfall wash over her. She held the necklaces tightly in her hand, her thumb brushing over the pendants as she began to reminisce.

Years ago, this place had been their sanctuary. Sejoon and Hyeongwon would escape here whenever the pressures of their family and their titles became too much to bear. She remembered the countless times they had laughed and played by the water, their worries momentarily forgotten in the joy of their sibling bond.

"Remember when we used to come here to avoid our lessons?" Sejoon whispered to herself, a bittersweet smile forming on her lips. "You'd always bring your book, and I'd try to catch fish with my bare hands."

She could almost hear Hyeongwon's laughter in her mind, see the way his eyes would light up with amusement at her antics. They had shared so many dreams and secrets here, their bond as strong as the river that flowed beside them.

@❁ bae eunhyuk Geon did not answer Eunhyuk when he asked where they were going. He was mostly sure there was a cave nearby, but in the dark he could not be certain if he was where he thought they were, if the cave was nearby, or if he could find it in the dark. But the gods were at least a fraction kind tonight, and he lead them inside. They were both drenched at this point, and Geon frowned at the uncomfortable feeling of his clothes, heavy and wet, clinging to his skin.

The discomfort, however, came second to the younger, who looked miserable in so many ways. It caused Geon's heart to squeeze painfully in his chest, and he let out a soft sigh as he walked to the younger. He gently touched Eunhyuk's face with the back of his hand without bothering to ask permission, frowning as he felt the male warmer than he should be.

Geon cursed softly. "It is safe," he promised, beginning to look through the cave. I the dark it was nearly impossible though, so he resorted to feeling around with his hands and shuffling his feet to see if there were any dry sticks or branches laying about. "I hid out here one night a few years ago when I was running from some officers after I got into a drunken fight." He finally found a few small branches, though he knew they would not do much.

"The cave is too close to town for animals to live in it besides harmless things. Whatever might be in here will be much more afraid of us than we are of it." He discarded the kindling, searching his clothes for a pouch where he kept some flint. Geon made quick work of striking it against his blade and let out a noise of frustration when it took a few times to get the pile of twigs to catch fire, carefully building it up. The flames cast harsh shadows in the cave, half-lighting Geon's features as they twisted into concern as he searched the artist's face.

"This will not do much, but it is better than nothing." Geon stood up and took Eunhyuk very gently by the hands, leading him closer. He chewed the inside of his cheek, debating for a moment. Geon was in survival mode. Though this was hardly life or death, he knew how to prevent the younger from catching anything that would cause too much harm, but the method...

"I need you to take off your clothes," he said finally, bluntly. "Your clothes are wet, and as they dry they will use the heat from your body. They need to come off." The best way to warm would for them both to be , but he did not think the situation dire enough for that. "At least the outer layers. I will do my best to keep the fire going, but I can hardly get any dry wood outside at the moment."

@❃ choi geon Eunhyuk cannot tell whether the flush he feels in his cheeks is due to the light embarrassment he feels when Geon helps him stand properly, or if it's from the cold he's beginning to feel. Either way, the rain merely complicates his current state. He feels both sober and lightheaded all at once, like he feels as if he can still think, but he knows that the moment he lets his guard down, he will be out like a light. And perhaps, he shouldn't burden Geon with his limp body if he ever does pass out. But would he even be able to hold on his consciousness if the rain continues through the night?

Unconsciously, he tightens his hold on Geon's hand, whose palm is warm against his. There is a thought in the back of his head, a small realization—or perhaps reminder?—of the difference between their hands. Eunhyuk's fingers are long, slender, quite knobby, but Geon's palm is larger, always warmer. Even in the cold, Geon is warm, and Eunhyuk holds tight.

"Where are we going...?" Eunhyuk blinks, following after Geon's pacing, while another hand moves up to keep the hat on top of his head. It doesn't take them long, however, to reach what seems to be an empty cave (or at least, Eunhyuk hopes it *is* empty. He wouldn't know what to do, really, if a wild animal lives there). Eunhyuk lets himself be dragged into the cave, taking the hat off once they're out of the downpour.

There's a slight itch to his nose, and then—a sneeze, holding the hat to cover his mouth. He sniffles, looking at Geon with mildly teary eyes. Whether this is due to his emotions, which almost overwhelmed him earlier, or to his newfound sneezes, he doesn't know. "Do you—Do you think this is safe...?"

@❁ bae eunhyuk It hurts. Gods, it hurts. It hurts to have Eunhyuk back in his arms like this, where for brief moments Geon can pretend that they never ended things, that Eunhyuk was still his, would still smile for him and hold his hand and trace the scars painted across his skin. As if everything was okay, and would be okay, so long as he could hold the artist like this. The heavens must truly be bored, to test him this way. Perhaps he was a character in a Qing tale, where he was actually a god or spirit, and he had to endure this trial of heartbreak to ascend to immortality. The more likely explanation was that he himself broke someone's heart past mending in a past life, and now he was paying for it in this.

But that was okay. Endure, endure endure, said the steady beating of his heart. The pain is okay. It's worth it, to have Eunhyuk back in his arms like this. The artist tried so many times to keep him away. Had said so many harsh, biting words. Geon never believed them. Not really. If they were real, they would never keep finding their way back to each other.

Geon suspects Eunhyuk lies a lot. That every cold gaze, every smirk, is a performance to keep others at bay to protect himself. After all, he had seen past the veil many times, and now was no exception. It did not mean the lies hurt any less. On the contrary, it hurt more. Because Eunhyuk knew exactly what those lies would do, and how much they would hurt, and he chose to say them anyway. To keep Geon away.

It never worked.

The rain grew heavier, and Geon let out a grunt of frustration. He himself would likely be fine, his consititution strong since childhood. He could count the number of times he had gotten sick on one hand. Eunhyuk, however...

Geon sighed and grabbed the younger gently, lifting him to a standing position. He pulled his hat off and placed it on the younger, grabbing his hand. "No time to get back," he decided. "There should be a....ah." He began a light jog, tugging the younger along with him. He would not let Eunhyuk get sick.

Endure, endure, endure, cried his heart furiously. I love you, I love you, I love you. Please stop pushing me away.

@❃ choi geon ( this is long as HELL bc of thought dump please do not feel pressured to mirror i had bad brainrot )

Even now, Geon is still so gentle. Eunhyuk knows this man is not used to gentleness. But Geon is gentle regardless, touching him with hands so light Eunhyuk would've had a hard time believing that Geon has just fought off several men moments prior. Geon wraps his fingers around Eunhyuk's wrist, and Eunhyuk lets him—he lets Geon pull his hand away from his face, even if every single inch of his being screams with the urge to hide. He is no longer used to this, being seen. He is no longer used to this kind of gentleness. (When was the last time he's been touched like this, as if he's delicate, meant to be cared for? When was the last time someone has looked at him like this, past the mask?)

How is it that Geon's mere presence gives Eunhyuk so much comfort? Suddenly, he feels like crying, tears dancing at the corners of his eyes, threatening to fall at any moment now. He thinks it's a little bewildering, just how easy it is for Geon to make him feel at ease, even with the small circles Geon rubs against the skin of Eunhyuk's wrist. Eunhyuk feels like giving in, like giving up this futile attempt of keeping his walls up.

But still, there is something that's stopping these walls from completely crumbling. They are no longer perfect, hadn't been perfect ever since Geon's confessed to him that one fateful evening in the docks. The walls Eunhyuk has built over the years have been carefully pulled apart, brick by brick, and it is easy—really, it is easy, to put them back together in a false hope of protecting himself once again, but it is also just as easy for Geon to take it away. Just the sight of the older man is almost enough to make Eunhyuk want to risk it all again.

Does he deserve this? Does he deserve this gentleness, this genuine care from the man whose heart he led to ruin?

The world seems to be playing with them. What else would be the explanation for putting Geon in Eunhyuk's trail, one drunken night, where Eunhyuk would be in dire need of someone's help? Of course Geon would follow him. Of course he would, because Geon had always been the one to follow him. Even when Eunhyuk left and ran, Geon was always on the same path, always on the same trail, as though no matter how far Eunhyuk runs, Geon will always catch up.

He doesn't know whether to be thankful for it, or to be frustrated, because he is *not* the path to follow if Geon wanted to save his heart from breaking yet again.

Eunhyuk is trembling, he realizes, when Geon wraps his arms around him. Eunhyuk's hand slowly reaches out, as though hesitant, but Geon's words make him feel... so safe. As though nothing in this world can touch him, so long as he remains to be by Geon's side. And so he grabs at Geon's clothes, letting himself be vulnerable once again tonight, hiding his face against Geon's neck, breathing in the older man's scent.

(Does he deserve this? Does he deserve this feeling of security, when he's the one who was first to leave and run away like the coward that he is?)

A small thank you is uttered against Geon's skin. Barely audible, that Eunhyuk thinks Geon may not hear. But that thought is soon forgotten, when he feels a drop of rain the moment Geon shifts. Eunhyuk leans away as well, looking up at the sky, before turning to look at Geon with a rather awkward smile, as if he isn't on the verge of breaking down and losing his mind. "Do you... perhaps know the way back?"

And in that next moment, the rain begins to fall. Stronger, faster, soaking Eunhyuk faster than he'd like as he tries to stand with shaky legs. "I—We should find a place quick," he says rather breathlessly, forcing himself to be strong enough to stand on his own. "We'll get sick at this rate."

@❁ bae eunhyuk Geon watches Eunhyuk, brow furrowing as he studies the male's expressions. Then he buckles and falls to the ground and Geon curses softly, rushing forward to grab the younger. Geon gently held Eunhyuk by the waist and arm, frowning as he looked down at him. Eunhyuk covered his face, an action Geon was familiar with; Eunhyuk always covered his face when he could not hide an emotion, one he did not wish for anyone to see. It was a familiar action that made his heart ache.

Gently, ever so Gently, Geon wrapped his fingers around one delicate wrist, urging it down from Eunhyuk's face, though he was not forceful about it. He just hoped that Eunhyuk still understood he did not have to hide, even if they were no longer...like that.

Eunhyuk speaks, and the cracking vibrato of it made Geon wince, as if in pain. He rarely--if ever--saw Eunhyuk like this, and it hurt. Geon sank down onto the ground beside the artist, rubbing soothing circles against the inside of the male's wrist to try to coax him. "I...there was someone sneaking around the Go manor. I was following them, but lost them right around thee edge of the forest. Then I saw you and..." He sighed. "Of course I could tell it was you, even in this cursed darkness. You seemed off so, I...well, I followed you." Geon did not even bother lying; Eunhyuk would be able to tell, anyway. Geon was a rotten liar.

"I am glad I did, though." The elder frowned, a bit unsure what to do. He had never seen Eunhyuk this shaken up before, but he did not know if his consoling would even be welcome. After all, the artist had made it very clear what he thought of Geon that day they cut things off, as well as many times in between when they could not help themselves but to give into each other's bodies.

But, deciding the worst thing Eunhyuk could do was break his heart again, Geon decided to try. Even if he was hurt, that was okay. All he wished was to provide some level of reassurance and calm to the younger. If Eunhyuk lashed out at him like a cornered animal, he would not even blame him. For Eunhyuk, he would endure. As he always did.

Wrapping his arms around the younger, Geon rubbed his back in soothing circles. "It's alright, Eunhyuk-ah. You are safe. I would /never/ let anyone harm a single hair on your head. Never, ever." He closed his eyes, trying to block out the achingly familiar scent of Eunhyuk. He bade the memories of nights spent talking in one another's arms, of holding each other so close he thought he and Eunhyuk would become a singular being, not come. But they always did.

But with that scent came another. A crisp, humid scent that made Geon immediately look up as he felt a drop of rain fall onto his face. "Ah..."

@❃ choi geon Maybe Eunhyuk really *is* drunk, because what else would explain the fact that the man he hasn't been expecting to see at all, stand in between him and the men who are likely about to cause his death?

A part of him wonders if he's mistaken someone else for Geon's back, but the moment the man speaks, Eunhyuk knows that it's Geon. Of course he knows it's Geon, how could he not? He knows it by the way Geon breathes, by smell. He would know that it's Geon even with his eyes closed, would know Geon's presence. Perhaps it should be a crime, how well Eunhyuk's body still knows the man. It has been years, hasn't it? It's been years, and yet...

And yet here he is, eyes wide in disbelief as Geon stands in between him and the bandits. So deep in shock and disbelief that he can only watch as Geon begins to fight. It's rare that Eunhyuk sees the older in action, really, now that he thinks about it. Though he was never as reckless before as he is now. He would never have considered wandering into the forests in search for solace, for solace came in the form of his (former) lover, whose presence was—still is—more than enough to calm the thoughts that eat away at his mind, gnawing at his sanity.

Choi Geon has introduced to him a world of peace that Eunhyuk hadn't even considered before, but Eunhyuk had been so unused to that notion that he did the very thing he's good at: run away.

Eunhyuk watches in awe—the way Geon moves, certain and fast. Eunhyuk knows, in the back of his mind, that Geon can kill these bandits had he wanted to. (Eunhyuk knows, for Geon has once promised to him before, that Geon can—and will—kill for him, had the need arose. Eunhyuk both fears and admires Geon for it.) It startles Eunhyuk a little, just to realize how much he claims to still *know* about the man. How much of it rings true, and how much has Geon changed over the years?

Geon turns to look at him, slowly, almost as if Geon doesn't want to face him. Eunhyuk doesn't blame Geon. He can't blame Geon, for Eunhyuk is the reason why they're at this... weird situation. They've broken it off years ago, and yet they still meet. They're still unable to keep their hands away from each other. And by the gods, Geon still seems to know him so well, because why else would Geon be here?

Eunhyuk in a deep breath, before he feels his legs weaken. His knees buckle, and he falls down to his knees, his head feeling even lighter than before, as he raises a palm to his face, covering whatever expression he seems to have painted over his visage now. He doesn't even know what he looks like now. Does he look scared? Shocked? Confused? He doesn't even know.

When he speaks, his voice is trembling, almost as if he's on the verge of crying. "What... What are you doing here, hyungnim?" he asks. "Does—Does your patrol include—ha—the forests now?"
❃ choi geon 3 days ago
@❁ bae eunhyuk Geon watched with horror and an odd sense of detachment as he watched other figures emerge from the wood. Honestly, no one ever went into the forest this late at night. Why were bandits even /awake/ at this time of night? They must have heard Eunhyuk wondering through with an encampment near by. How bothersome.

Expletives began running through his head in a steady stream as he hurried closer. Geon had his hand on his sword and was quick to draw it, putting himself in between Eunhyuk and the bandits. He set his jaw, eyeing each one and spotting their weapons. Crude, likely stolen and uncared for. These men would likely be good in a street fight, or against people with little to no training in self defense, but Geon had been trained with the sword since he was old enough to hold one.

"I swear, no one sleeps around here," Geon sighed out. He did not dare look back at his (this is getting old, Geon) artist, keeping his eyes forward. But he could feel the male's presence the way one feels a storm coming on. The bandits glanced between themselves, likely confused at his sudden appearance, but Geon just wanted this over with.

Making the first move, Geon used his sword to knock the weapon out of one man's hands, following it with a swift kick to the stomach. While he stumbled, the bodyguard span and parried for another, grunting as a hit landed to his side. Nothing he couldn't handle though, ignoring the sensation of the wind being knocked out of him as his sword cut a line across the male's shoulder and chest. The last man Geon was able to grab his wrist, disarming him and then hitting him over the head with the hilt of his sword to knock him out.

Glancing at the other two injured bandits, Geon raised his sword and stalked closer, but they had taken a look at each other and retreated. Geon had not been hitting to kill, but he knew if they hadn't run, he absolutely would. Geon had killed before, admittedly, though he did no take pride in the fact. He could not say for certain he would never kill again, but he had made a promise to himself that he would do so if only absolutely necessary. Or for Eunhyuk, which was really the same thing.

Geon lowered his sword and slowly, very slowly, turned towards Eunhyuk. The pain, as always, hit him like a bucket of cold water being poured over him. He took a breath to brace himself to the pain, knuckles whitening on the hilt of his sword. He had not seen Eunhyuk since the wedding. He had sent him a birthday gift but...he really should not have done that, either. They both knew it. How did they always end up being thrown back together again? It was a cruel, sick joke the universe and whatever damned gods sat up there enjoyed playing.

"Are...are you okay?" Geon finally managed out to break the silence.
❁ bae eunhyuk 3 days ago
@❃ choi geon Perhaps this truly isn't one of Eunhyuk's best ideas.

He's been aware of it since the moment he's stepped into the forest, but it rings even truer this time around, now that he falls into a gradual stop. His head is still light, his movements coming with a light sway. He's strayed away from the path that has often led travelers to the correct way without him noticing. He lets out a scoff, chuckling mockingly to himself as he runs a hand through his hair, easily ruining the low tie he's put it in.

Is this going to be his end, he wonders. Death, because of his drunken pursuit for silence. For quietness of his mind. His own voice is loud in his head, speaking of words that have never left his lips, and perhaps never will. He is good at hiding, after all; good at controlling the words that dance on his tongue. He knows how to lie, even when it isn't necessary. He lies when he feels threatened, almost like a way to protect himself. But it is because of these same lies that his mind is haunted by words that he ought to have said before. It's haunted him for years, plaguing him even when he paints.

Perhaps he should've gone for a livelier district instead. Would that silence the words in his head?

It's a bit too late to regret it now, he thinks, when everywhere he turns, it's beginning to look the same to him. It is only then that he starts to feel fear creeping into his being, realization finally dawning upon him. He's drunk in the middle of the forest, not even a weapon in his being should the need to protect him arise—has he become so desperate for solace that he's found death instead?

(Though even if he did have a weapon, he knows he would only prioritize the safety of his hands. Clearly, he values his art more than his life.)

He's just about to laugh at his misery again, when he hears presence behind him. Multiple. Their steps break branches, stepping on leaves scattered on the ground. His heart beats loudly against his ears, but he keeps his face void of his emotions, save for the same playful visage he dons almost like a poker face. There's no point to trying to outrun them. He'll likely get himself killed by tripping on a branch in his drunken state.

This truly isn't one of his best ideas.

When he turns around, he meets the faces of what he expected. Three bandits, daggers in their hands as they aim it at him. He can feel himself becoming cold with fear, but it doesn't show on his face. Instead, he speaks, still as confidently as he would like this is like any other circumstances. "Don't you think we can still talk this out, lads?"

@❁ bae eunhyuk Geon knew being out this late was strange. If anyone saw him, they would assume he was up to no good. He wore all black, a hat that he could duck his head and hide his face under, and he had his sword sitting on his hip. The cover of night were best for investigations, and he had recently seen someone sneaking about the Go family residence. A spy, thief, or simply someone curious, he was not sure. But he would certainly find out. The Go household had been so full of joy recently, and if a conversation he had about his sister said anything, it would continue.

Happiness was everywhere, but Geon always felt as if he had been skipped. Like a group of children receiving gifts on New Year's, but there was never any left over for him. While he had steeled himself to this years ago, it still sent a wave of ache through his chest if he thought about it too long. It did not matter; he was not owed happiness, was not owed anything in this life apart from death. But he would protect the happiness of his family where he could.

Geon had lost the trail of the mysterious onlooker when he spotted another man wandering about, heading for the forest. Frowning, Geon was about to turn away to begin searching again, but his mind thrummed, telling him this man was familiar. That he would recognize him anywhere. And upon another look, he did indeed.

Damn his traitorous mind and heart, that his bones and very being should recognize his soul's one desire by only a silhouette in the dark. Why was Bae Eunhyuk out this late? Why was his gait ever so slightly off, as if--ah. He was drunk.

The bodyguard paused. His hand on his sword tightened until his knuckles turned white. He chewed on the inside of his cheek, debating what to do. As if there was any other choice than Eunhyuk. So, with a resigned sigh, he set off after his--no, not his, not anymore. Never his.

Geon did not even bother trying to fool himself with thoughts of merely being concerned for a drunk man's wellbeing. He knew the only reason he was doing this was because his heart was making those painful, sore flip-flops in his chest. Once, he would have called them butterflies. Now he knows it's the feeling of his heart breaking over and over, doomed to repeat itself every time he sees Eunhyuk and is reminded that he cannot have him.

Rubbing his chest to soothe the throbbing, Geon catches more movement. Oh, dear. If this was a thief, or someone who had thoughts of harming his (stop that, Geon) artist. With a sigh, Geon stalked closer, hand on his sword, ready to use it if need be.

@❃ choi geon [ dated: sometime early january, 1870 ]

There is absolutely no reason for Eunhyuk to wandering around at this time of the night. But perhaps it is the liquor that has now sunk deeply into his system, that has him wandering around, a little light in the head. He has just finished drinking with an older friend whom he hadn't met in quite a while already. It's quite rare that he agrees to such invitations, especially as he is known for his rather elusive nature. But he finds himself somewhere in the outskirts of Hanseong hours later, deep into the night, perhaps a little tipsier than he'd intended when the night was just starting. This is certainly not the best idea he's had today, and hopefully not the worst either, as the pathways now seem to becoming darker, the lanterns that are supposed to stand by the streets slowly becoming fewer as he walks deeper.

The belated realization sends a light jolt to his body. This isn't the way home, though perhaps he's always been aware of that. He remembers a moment where he acknowledged this after turning a different street earlier, and so perhaps this isn't an accident. Perhaps him stepping into the outskirts is not a mistake, but rather, something he needs. Silence. Solitude, from the rest of the world.

He thinks he likes it better this way. The world is silent. There is no one to tell him what he must do to live his life. There is no one to tell him what society expects of him—a man, an artist, someone of his fame shouldn't be lingering like this. He should be out there, ambitious. He should be dreaming. But he doesn't remember the last time he's ever dreamt.

(Perhaps there is one time. He dreamt of another's presence, the warmth of their arms. He dreamt of a familiar face, and wished for another chance that he knows he doesn't deserve.)

He should be wanting more, they say. But all he wants is peace, he thinks. A life away from the buzz of the city. A life away from the eyes of other people. And this is where he gets it, his drunken mind says. This is where he gets it, where people do not often visit because of the danger, the unknown. His mind does not register the dangers, however. A more logical part of him knows that he should not be here, that he shouldn't make even a step further.

But he's already deeper into the forests than he should be, really, and he finds that there is little care in his being. He needs... calm. Quiet. From the world, and from his own thoughts. It is why he lets himself this rare streak of self-destruction, a recklessness that he's managed to control somewhat over the years. He lets himself this moment, one that he's likely to regret later (if there is even a chance for him to regret it), but for now, he doesn't care. For now, he will let himself be lost in this silence he seeks.

@❃ bang sungha Junha had started stepping away from Sungha already, not wanting to get caught up in the ensuing scuffle. He kept a wary eye on the other noblemen. They looked so scared and some part of Junha was amused by their fear. As far as he was concerned, all the upper class should be more afraid. After all, they take from the lower class with no regard, use the people like pawns. So he wouldn't lose any sleep if some rich bastards were scared or hurt.

As he watched Sungha throw a knife, he turned his head away from the center of the action. He couldn't bring himself to look at the blood, but he was pleased regardless. Just knowing that the guard was injured and probably needed medical attention as soon as possible. His older brother's talents were surely handy and Junha admired that about him, as well as his protectiveness.

Hearing his older brother's question, Junha turned around but made sure to keep his focus on Sungha. This look in the older man's eyes was one that would send a chill down anyone's spine, and it admittedly chilled Junha to the core when he first saw it. The crazed look of a madman, a predator getting the first taste of blood. It made him thankful that he was not the subject of those eyes, the object of his brother's bloodlust. There was a reason he called his older brother 'tiger.' Not just his size, but his ferocity and animalistic killing instinct. It wasn't something that could be taught in military academies and it made him unpredictable to the likes of the upper class, who undoubtedly were taught ways of fighting in formal education.

Where would the next blow be dealt? Junha had to decide. Taking a deep breath to steel himself, he looked at the man with the blood rushing from his thigh. Calf would just focus on the leg. , too. Looking over to Sungha again, he said, "Shoulder."

@✿ moon jaehoon { Year 1855, early Autumn }

The year was 1855, and the air was crisp with the promise of autumn as Sejoon and Saena sat side by side in the palanquin, their excitement palpable as they traveled towards the outskirts of Hanseong. Their destination? A horse stable supported by their family, where they would soon have their own horses.

The twins sat opposite each other, their eyes shining with anticipation as they chattered excitedly about the prospect of riding horses for the first time. Both twins wore the same hanbok, the pink one wore by Saena and the yellow one wore by Sejoon. Saena's long, dark hair cascaded over her shoulders as she leaned forward, her hands clasped together in excitement.

"Can you imagine, Sejoon?" Saena exclaimed, her voice filled with wonder. "Having our own horses to ride whenever we please! It's like a dream come true."

Sejoon nodded eagerly, her own enthusiasm mirroring her sister's. "I know, right? I can't wait to feel the wind in my hair as we gallop across the fields. It's going to be exhilarating!"

Their palanquin rattled along the country road, the sound of hooves echoing against the cobblestones as they drew closer to their destination. Sejoon glanced out of the window, catching sight of the rolling hills and lush greenery passing by.

"It's going to be so beautiful out here," she remarked, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I can already imagine us racing through the fields, the sun shining down on us." Saena grinned, her eyes lighting up with mischief. "I bet I'll be faster than you," she teased, nudging her sister playfully.

Sejoon laughed, swatting her sister's arm gently. "We'll see about that," she countered, her competitive spirit igniting. "But no matter who wins, we'll have the time of our lives together."

As the palanquin continued its journey, the twins leaned back in their seats, their hearts filled with anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. "They must be excited for you to have one." Sejoon muttered, knowing their mother and father care more deeply of Saena than her.

Saena blinked and looked at her twin, "What?" She asked before Sejoon smiled again and lied. "Eomeoni and Abeoji will see two of their children riding their own horses once we go home." She chuckles, hiding the enviousness inside Sejoon.

They may have been on their way to get their own horses, but in that moment, they were already riding free in their imaginations, boundless and unstoppable.

Sejoon looked over the outside, she sees a few people in the area and already sensed they're in their destination soon. "We're almost there, orabeoni must have already at the stables." She told her twin with a smile on her face.

@❃ gu yangjin The marchioness’ heart sank as she approached the outskirts of the city, her eyes scanning the desolate landscape littered with weary travelers, each bearing the heavy burden of famine and hardship. Among them, a figure knelt against a mud wall, thin and frail, his pale complexion contrasting starkly against the muted earth tones of his surroundings. The boy appeared no different from the others at first glance, yet something about him drew her attention.

Without hesitation, Eunha dropped to her knees beside him, her heart aching at the sight of his emaciated form, his labored breaths echoing the struggle of countless others afflicted by the famine. She reached for the waterskin at her side, a small comfort she carried with her on her visits to the villages, and offered it to him, her voice soft but resolute. "Here, drink," she urged, her eyes reflecting both compassion and determination.

Eunha could not ignore the urgency in his condition and with swift movements, she shed her outer layer of her hanbok, the fabric billowing as she wrapped it around him, offering what little warmth she could spare. "Can you walk?" she inquired, her tone gentle yet urgent. "Come, let's get out of the cold. I'll take you to a food shelter inside the city."

Despite the weariness etched into his features, she could feel his eyes betray a flicker of hope at her words, a glimmer amidst the despair that surrounded them. With Eunha's help, she brought him to his feet, allowing him to lean on her for support, despite her being much shorter than him, as they prepared to make their way towards the city gates.

@❁ hong yeoreum Hyunji couldn't help but feel a flutter in her chest as Yeoreum approached her, her bashful smile tugging at Hyunji's heartstrings. The warm touch of Yeoreum's hand on her arm sent a pleasant shiver down her spine, and she returned the smile with equal bashfulness.

"Alright can mean many things," Hyunji remarked playfully, her eyes dancing with mischief as she met Yeoreum's gaze. She was curious about what her friend was hiding, but she didn't want to press too hard. Instead, she focused on enjoying their time together, relishing the rare opportunity to relax and unwind.

As Yeoreum laced her fingers with hers, Hyunji's heart skipped a beat. The warmth of their connection spread through her like wildfire, igniting a sense of comfort and companionship that she cherished more than anything. "I'm glad we're here together too," she confessed softly, her gaze locked with Yeoreum's.

The confession took Hyunji by surprise, and her cheeks flushed with a rosy hue. "I like you too, Yeoreum," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "You always bring light into everyone's life, including me, even on the darkest of days."

As Yeoreum spoke of her encounter with the Park clan, Hyunji listened intently, her curiosity piqued. "The Park clan, you say?" she echoed, her interest piqued. "They do have a reputation for being... eccentric, to say the least. But I'm glad you're handling it well. You're stronger than you think, Yeoreum."

A soft chuckle escaped Hyunji's lips as Yeoreum mentioned her own clients. "Oh, you have no idea," she replied with a mischievous grin. "I've had some rather... interesting encounters lately. But nothing I can't handle." She squeezed Yeoreum's hand gently, the warmth of their connection soothing her soul.

"Mine I got a new friend as well... someone from Jang clan." She told her before sighs as she subconsciously touched her scar on her neck to feel the embossed lump in her flesh. "I just hope he's as good as his brother."

@✿ kim eunha Yangjin didn't know how long it had taken him to arrive at the capital. At some point he had stopped counting the rise and fall of the moon. He vaguely remembered seeing several full moons, but he couldn't say for sure how many. It had been a horrific journey. So many people, mostly Cheonmin, were migrating to the capital in hopes of surviving the famine. The roads were filled with families slowly walking up the roads carrying what they could on their back, enviously staring at the privileged few who had a cart. Richer people travelled with ox or horses but the animals didn't make it far in the poor conditions. In the end most of them ended up being roasted on the fire. That was a dangerous affair, given how many of the travellers were starving. Yangjin had seen with his own eyes how a stick-thin man had slaughtered another to get a scrap of meat.

That being said, it did get better the closer they got to larger cities and towns. There were more resources there and, for a time, the bloodthirsty killers from before turned calm and friendly. No one but the most naive trusted strangers while travelling. The most terrifying were those who travelled alone. Unprotected and exposed to robbers and thieves, any solo traveller who made it close to the capital was feared. For a leg of the trip, Yangjin had joined a group of middle-aged women to avoid becoming a target. Thankfully, he was not seen as a threat by anyone. Being strong was good, being a target was not. Yangjin knew better than to make himself a threat to a mass of starving, desperate people.

By the time he approached the outskirts, Yangjin was alone. He was so thin his ribs protruded through his skin. His arms and legs were emaciated, cheeks sunken in and he shared the slightly crazed, starved look that so many other travellers had. Despite his poor condition, he didn't stand out at all. Cheonmin like him were a dime a dozen. They littered the outskirts. There was only one things about him that drew attention: He was unusually pale for a Cheonmin. He wore a dirty hood over his head, hiding his light hair that lacked pigment which had now slipped off his head and hung around his shoulders.

Yangjin was on his knees, leaning against a mud wall as he coughed, thin fingers clutching the front of his ragged clothes as he desperately tried to breathe. He was sick. Unsurprising, considering that he was usually sick. Most of the travellers were. The lack of fresh water, good food, being exposed to the icey winds at night... Yangjin couldn't believe he was still alive. He had done a lot of things to ensure his survival, unspeakable things, but it still surprised him. When he first set out for the capital, he had not expected to make it.

Well, here he was now. Curled up against a mud wall in the outskirts of this place he so desperately wanted to reach, shivering, coughing, and feeling like he was about to suffocate. He was so... so... tired. He wanted to sleep, but Yangjin knew better. If he slept now, here, he was going to die. He had to reach that place. That place he had heard people talking about. That porridge place that supposedly handed out food for free. Yangjin didn't believe that it was free, but even if they demanded something strange in return, he was willing to do it. He needed to eat more than tree bark and grass. Oh how he hated winter. At least in Spring and Summer there were bugs to eat.

(I kind of overdid it length wise ;; my next post will be shorter probably!)

@❀ kim hyunji "You're right...", she giggled softly, nervously, her face burning and looked off to the side. Still, she waited for Hyunji to turn and then quickly shed the remainder of her clothes and slipped into the water. The water ripped as she stepped into it, the soft waves rocking against Hyunji's skin. "Yes but... still..." Hyunji was right. They were both women. It was alright. And besides, it was Hyunji. 'Yes, it's fine. It's fine.', Yeoreum soothed herself and slowly walked through the hot water towards her friend.

Once at her side, she gently touched her arm and smiled bashfully. "Mhm it's been... alright.", she responded vaguely, not quite ready to share her recent experience yet. She would build up to it as they spent time together.

Steadily, the warm waters and Hyunji's smile lulled Yeoreum into a relaxed state. Her long black hair bound up into a messy bun, cheeks flushed from the steam she stayed close to her friend. Her friend. That's right, Hyunji was her friend. Yeoreum did not have many true friends. And right now she looking right at her best friend, through the fog and the steam, the beautiful woman's cheeks flushed just as hers likely were. A warm feeling spread in Yeoreum's heart and she reached out once more through the water to hold the other's hand.

With a shy smile, she laced her fingers with Hyunji's. "Mhm. This is a wonderful place, Hyunji. It was a great idea to come here. I... I'm glad we're here. Together." Yeoreum bit down on her lower tier and eyed the other girl. She had wanted to tell her about what had happened at the Park estate, but why ruin the mood? To think spending time with Hyunji had made her feel so much better... The hurt she had felt before melted away, and now she just thought it silly that she had let herself be so wounded by a stranger's words. "Hyunji, I really like you.", she spoke softly. She often told Hyunji that, for no reason other than to express the warmth she held for the girl in her heart. "Spending time with you makes me feel everything is alright.", she chuckled and squeezed the girl's hand.

"I actually just got a new Yangban client. The Park clan. The people there are strange, and cruel, but it's alright. It doesn't matter." Yeoreum eye-smiled at Hyunji. In this moment, she genuinely felt like it didn't matter. "Did you get any strange new clients, Hyunji? I always find your stories so funny...", Yeoreum giggled and covered with her free hand, eyes curving into half moons.

@❁ hong yeoreum As Hyunji turned around and caught sight of Yeoreum, a warm smile spread across her lips. Despite the initial surprise, she couldn't help but laugh softly at her friend's predicament. They had known each other for years, and moments like these only served to deepen their bond.

"It's okay, Yeoreum," Hyunji reassured her, her laughter fading into a gentle chuckle. "We're the only ones here, and the steam and mist around us cover the whole place. No need to worry."

Yeoreum's cheeks burned bright red as she struggled to cover herself with the fabric of her fallen chima. Her embarrassment was palpable, but Hyunji's easygoing demeanor helped to ease the tension in the air.

Hyunji turned back to face the other direction, giving Yeoreum the privacy she needed to compose herself. She understood her friend's modesty and didn't want to make her feel any more uncomfortable than she already was. "Yeoreum-ah, there's no need to hide, we're both women here anyway." She said, before she tilts her head but not daring to look back at her. Despite her initial embarrassment, Yeoreum always managed to bounce back with grace and dignity. It was one of the qualities that Hyunji admired most about her.

"So, how have you been, Yeoreum?" Hyunji asked, striking up a conversation to distract her friend from her earlier embarrassment. "It's been a while since we've had a chance to catch up. How is your acupuncture business? Did it go well as usual?"

The warm water of the hot spring enveloped them both, washing away the stresses of the day and allowing them to relax in each other's company. As they soaked in the soothing waters, Hyunji and Yeoreum shared stories and laughter, their bond stronger than ever before. "You know it is quite good to know someone would join me in a relaxation from work." Hyunji chuckled at it.

@❀ kim hyunji "Just that way, miss.", the attendant said with a smile as they gestured towards the entrance to a part of the hot springs kept separate from the public area. Yeoreum smiled shyly and nodded, clutching the towel and her small basket filled with this and that. Her feet were sore from walking the long way to the bathhouse, and she couldn't wait to see Hyunji again. She was a seamstress Yeoreum had gotten acquainted with over the past years. She was who Yeoreum went to ask for help making new clothes.

Hyunji was very different from herself, very different. She was smart, ambitious and filled with a firey passion to achieve her goals. When Yeoreum would swallow her words and cry, Hyunji would fight. For that, Yeoreum respected her friend deeply. She could be very inappropriate at times, true, but all her good qualities made up for it. Over the years Yeoreum had witnessed first hand how well her friend's business did, while her own remained stagnant. She wasn't jealous, she, unlike her friend, had no ambition or desire to become a businesswoman. No, seeing her friend's success made her heart swell with pride and satisfaction. Hyunji was... ˢᵒ ᶜᵒᵒˡ.

Yeoreum soundlessly stepped into the private hot spring area. She could see Hyunji's back facing her. Her friends fair shoulders were peeking out of the water. Too embarrassed to undress with her friend watching, Yeoreum did not greet her. She wanted to slip into the water first. But why was the knot on her chestpiece so tight today?´

Yeoreum flushed, her heart skipping a beat when she saw Hyunji turning around. Yeoreum had already set her Jeogeori aside, which left her in her Chima. She was currently trying to loosen the knot that kept the Chima tightly bound above her s. Her shoulders and arms were bare. As fate would have it, just as Hyunji looked at her, the knot loosened and the Chima fell.

"D- don't look!", Yeoreum gasped, bright red as she clutched the fabric to her. Her chest was bare but at least she could still hide her lower body. "Can you... can you turn around please?", she asked in embarrassment.

@❁ hong yeoreum Hyunji's journey to the private bathhouse with hot springs was a solitary one, the path winding through the outskirts of the countryside. She walked with purpose, her small knapsack slung over her shoulder containing a change of clothes, a towel, and a few personal belongings. The scent of blooming flowers filled the air, mingling with the sound of birdsong as she made her way along the narrow dirt path.

The sun beat down on her, casting dappled shadows through the branches of the trees overhead. Despite the warmth of the day, Hyunji's anticipation for the soothing waters of the hot springs kept her spirits high. The bathhouse was known for its secluded location and tranquil atmosphere, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

As she walked, Hyunji couldn't help but marvel at the natural beauty surrounding her. The lush greenery of the countryside stretched out in all directions, dotted with wildflowers and tall grass swaying in the gentle breeze. She paused occasionally to take in the scenery, breathing in the fresh air and reveling in the peace and quiet of her surroundings.

After what felt like hours of walking, Hyunji finally reached her destination—a quaint, rustic bathhouse nestled at the edge of a crystal-clear lake. The building was constructed from weathered wood and stone, its warm, inviting aura drawing her closer with each step.

Pushing open the heavy wooden door, Hyunji was greeted by the soothing sound of rushing water and the steamy heat of the hot springs. The interior was cozy and dimly lit, with flickering lanterns casting a soft glow over the room. She exchanged a few words with the attendant, who handed her a fresh towel and directed her towards the changing area.

Hyunji quickly shed her travel-worn clothes and slipped into the warm waters of the hot springs, sighing with relief as the tension melted away from her muscles. The water was blissfully warm, enveloping her in a cocoon of comfort and tranquility. Closing her eyes, she allowed herself to fully relax, letting go of the worries and stresses of everyday life.

Then she subconsciously touched her scar on her neck where her past lover almost slit her life away during their last encounter, Hyunji almost gasped for air every time she was reminded of it before calming down.

@❃ na soo Garam had not much of a choice other than to listen to the older woman's drunken ramblings. If she were a crueler person that she already was, she would've zoned out and stare out at the constellations she knew nothing about, or even interrupt Bimyeong to stop her from this sort of thing. Yet, Garam still had some good in her despite the years living like the starving rat she was in the sewer system that was Hanseong, and so, she listened.

Because it was good for Bimyeong. The woman was mysterious as she was closed off. Which made sense, because how else would someone like that even keep up that sort of facade? Garam was much the same, perhaps, that was why they got along so well. It felt like an innate connection between the two of them, and as Garam heard Bimyeong's words, it had become a little clearer.

Emphasis on a little.

Garam stared at the woman as she fell onto her side, and tried to work out what she had just been told.

Surely, that was a common thing for a fisherman to say, right?

Garam had only known one her entire life, and that was her father, and he would say the exact same thing to her until his deathbed. Garam's life had taken that and kept to it like it was her lifeline. Though, it was certainly unintentional, Garam had only taken every opportunity necessary because that was what it meant to survive. And that had been Garam's goal thus far.

Bimyeong's warmth kept Garam from freezing out here in the Hanseong night, like a warm blanket. Garam had kept away from the touch of another since her father's bonebreaking hugs, so, this had initially made Garam's entire body tense up and threaten to pull away.

Every fisherman would say the same thing. It was common. The likelihood of her father being the same man Bimyeong's mother was referring to was merely a coincidence.

Even if it would explain the dreams Garam had been having since she met Bimyeong.

She sighed, trying to relax back into her seat. In a few moments she would have to pull Bimyeong up to her feet and take her back home. She had no idea where Bimyeong lived, so Garam's own residence would have to do, but she wanted to sit here underneath the full moon just a little while longer. The bright face of the celestial body had never given Garam much comfort, her father always equating them to the souls of her passed family members. But since his death, she had started to see the comfort he felt in looking up at the night sky. Perhaps he was looking down at her on the moon's face tonight, too.

Garam placed her hand upon Bimyeong's black hair, and she d it, as if Bimyeong was nothing more than a purring stray cat on her lap. Maybe this would be enough.

@✿ go mina A light breath of relief passed Sunmi’s lips as the woman helped her steady herself back up again. “Oh, I am relieved she did not frighten you,” she hurriedly sighed before smiling. “Mina? J-just Mina?” Her eyes blinked slowly in surprise, trying to let every impression of the moment sink in fully. It was not every day you’d meet a marchioness at night out on a ride, much less one with her hair down and a request to be called by her first name and nothing else.

“He’s beautiful,” Sunmi cooed as she took in the sight of the horse up close. She had never been this close to one. Even though she knew they were big, she had never really thought about just how big until she was standing before one now, having it tower above her. And yet all she could really think was that it was a beautifully majestic creature. She was so distracted she did not notice Mina moving closer until she felt something sneak into her hands. A quick glance down revealed it to be a carrot and an apple, a small smile spreading on her lips.

Lifting the two up before the horse, she hoped he would help indicate which one he preferred. And as she heard a chomp, feeling the hand holding the apple grow lighter, Sunmi felt her cheeks straining from the smile on her lips. Each dawn brought with it the stark reality of solitude

“Of course! I would rather stay with you so you made a good call.” Riah responds enthusiastically.

“I do not want to miss any gossip with the two days that we are going to be here for. Now..Aera.” Riah sits on a cushion laid out in front of a tea table as she waited for the other two to sit with her.
“What is the real reason for your absence from Hanseong? And before that, I imagine Eunbyeol eonni also owes us an explanation?” She arches an eyebrow as she motioned for the two of them to sit with her.

“When have you started seeing this man? And Aera, is Marquess Song aware that you have disappeared from Hanseong? I would hope so.” She quips.

Aera's servant returned with a pot of freshly brewed tea, and Riah graciously took the initiative to pour tea into three cups, one for each of them. The fragrant steam rose from the porcelain as she filled each cup.

"I fear this tea might not be strong enough for the conversations we're about to have," Riah teased, taking a thoughtful sip of the warm beverage. She settled back comfortably, her eyes expectantly fixed on her dear friends, awaiting their responses.

“Please Yeonhwa, since when have we become so formal with each other? Did you remember when I always chased your bullies away from when you were a child? I know it has been so long, but I’d like you to still treat me like an older brother.” She had indeed grown up since they had last met but to him, she was still the same little girl he’s always protected.

There was no doubt that it was a safe space for women and children.
Once they arrive at her office, Sejin settles on the chair in front of Yeonhwa’s desk after she sits. His expression was still light hearted as he was eager to share with her the news of his upcoming enlistment.

"I realize it's been long overdue, and I wish I had made this decision sooner, but I've finally committed to enlisting in the military—specifically, the Navy, where your brothers currently serve." Sejin had always been groomed to carry on his family's lineage until his parents' untimely demise, after which he found himself at a loss. @❃ na garam Seoyul seethed with frustration, her mind swirling with Garam’s words which harbored some small praises for the woman that the little matchmaker disdained. In her eyes, the woman was a fraud, one worse than Seoyul herself who often feigned pretense and innocence to avoid responsibility for her mistakes and shortcomings. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling of being looked down at, as if her small troubles were nothing more than childish tantrums in the eyes of the older woman.

But as she distanced herself from Garam, Seoyul couldn't help but also take in the woman's words. Despite the annoyance that had settled within her, there was a small part of her that acknowledged and respected Garam's blunt honesty, a quality that she could appreciate, even if somewhat hesitantly.

When the other approached her from behind, Seoyul tensed, ready to hold her ground at any attempts to ensure her feelings were still considered true to herself. But, for a moment, Seoyul was taken aback by Garam's confession, her words echoed in the small space between them, resonating to the little matchmaker in ways she knew too well.

/Survival sometimes meant hurting others, or being deceitful... that is what makes us humans…/

It was a sentiment that struck a chord with Seoyul, a reminder of her own struggles and the lengths she had gone to in order to ensure she did not fall victim to others' whims. And though her frustration still simmered beneath the surface, Seoyul couldn't help but soften slightly towards the woman before her.

With a sigh, Seoyul turned to face Garam, her expression less upset compared to earlier. "Survival…" she echoed quietly, her voice soft and calm. "Yes, I suppose we all have to do what we must to survive."

And in that shared acknowledgment, a fragile truce was forged—a recognition of the complexities of life and the burdens that each of them carried. It was a small step towards understanding, but for Seoyul, it was enough for now.

"Tell me, eonnie," Seoyul began, calling her ‘eonnie’ was a decisive choice to bridge the gap of formalities between them, yet it was genuine. "Be honest with me, do you hate being at this camp as much as I do then? So, yes, maybe Jinseok was an idiot. His father never missed a chance to call him naive and too bright eyed. "If you end up being my superior, I'm sure you'll find other ways to hammer me into the right shape", he laughed after several moments of comfortable silence and letting the other man talk, before he made his way over to his horse, who was currently busy trying to find something edible on the muddy, gravelly ground.

"I would say it was a fortunate event indeed", Jinseok nodded then, guiding the horse over to where Sejin was standing, stroking an affectionate hand down the animal's neck. "And I would like that. Sitting down comfortably and not all muddy for a talk. But we will be leaving for our hometown in a couple day's time, so if possible, I'd appreciate it if you could make some time before we depart. It will he a couple months, before my father takes me to the capital again."

@❀ kim byungjun junho could hear the resounding twang coming from the man’s bow and the whirring sound of the incoming arrow could have frightened him. thankfully, the flying object merely went past his ears, hitting the tree just behind him. still, the yangban had been ignorant of the events that had transpired around him, his cat’s meowing taking all his attention. not even the pain on his scathed knees and elbows could take his eyes off of his beloved feline.

❝ are you insane?! ❞

junho’s gaze flickered up in surprise, not expecting for the hunter to walk past. his reproachful demeanor came as a shock to him. he was not the one who was close to being a murderer now, was he?

“pardon?” the man huffed, standing up to his full height to loom over the other male. “you were the one who almost killed my cat.” his back was turned when junho approach but he could already aee the broadness of his shoulders, the sturdiness of his built, and when the other finally turned to reprimand him, the man’s steps halted to a stop in shock.

junho’s gaze was met with piercing ones as the other peered up at him. frustration and judgment was evident on the man’s face, and it baffled the man so. what bothered junho more was the fact that he was undeniably attractive with his lips pursed and brows furrowed in exasperation, almost reminiscent of someone he —

the taller male shook his head briefly, hugging his feline close. he should focus, should he not? with a sigh and a tut, he regarded the other with equal displeasure and had it not been for kiko in his arms, he was sure he could have placed his hands ln his hips. “i *am* careful,” he bit back, completely ignoring the stinging of the wounds on his pale skin. “and this is not just a “mere” cat. she’s my beloved daughter.”
