as a very young kid, it was already clear to hongjoong's parents that something wasn't exactly "normal" with their son. the first instance that they witnessed was when he was three and was getting teased for the bright amber color of his eyes. he looked at the kids as if he didn't understand what they were saying and simply didn't speak a word. He didn't understand what they were laughing at or what they even found funny and just went back to playing.
the next instance was when he was about seven. the other kids in their neighborhood had just begun to phsycially bully their son, that included shoving and pushing. although they eventually went to stop it all, they couldn't help but to just watch it unfold. hongjoong never flinched and didn't cry for help. they considered it him just being brave but it was clear from his expression that it was something completely different from that. he looked absent and as though he was just in a completely different place. even as they cleaned up his scratches and cuts from where he'd met the sidewalk or the bricks from when he'd been shoved, he just watched them. when they asked him what was going on and if he was okay, all he could think to utter in response was "why wouldn't i be okay?"
once he reached his preteen years, they took him to a psychiatrist and, after a couple of years of sessions, he was disagnosed with alexithymia. just as he and his parents were beginning to get an idea as to what was going on with him, by the time he was in high school, they suddenly couldn't afford medications, let alone treatments. the truth came out when he and his parents were kidnapped.
before, he had never questioned why it seemed like his family moved so much and why, as soon as his older brother had the chance, he separated himself from them. their kidnappers revealed themselves to be people that their parents not only owed money to but had stolen from. it would change the story if it had been for the sake of their kids and their family as a whole but it had been their own selfish undoing. their kidnappers had intended to torture them and they had started to do so but found themselves taking an interest in hongjoong's inability to process fear, let alone any sort of compassion as he watched them inflict pain on his parents. it was hongjoong's question that really changed things.
"can i try?"
hongjoong wanted a taste of whatever that rush was that their captors clearly felt. he wanted to see if he could feel it, too. he didn't but, periodically, he'll recall the looks in his parents' eyes as he stabbed them. he'll never know what that feeling really was, considering he can't ask them.
his family's captors were members of the kwon family and eventually passed on information of the heartless guy that killed his own parents just to "try it out." he was eventually recruited and hongjoong didn't bother turning down the offer because he was still trying to find and chase the high that some of these others undeniably got from this life.
known by many names, most commonly "the monster," hongjoong has been in the family for around five years going on six. since reaching the b-class, he hasn't made an effort to participate in any of the evaluations, at least not with the intention to graduate in ranks. he's been told multiple times that he's fully capable of even being an elite at this point but he makes no effort to do so.

Seeing Hongjoong in person is everything you thought it would be. his in-person persona really lives up to the hype and, quite frankly, it is actually terrifying. you've heard him speak before and that doesn't help either. he's typically so monotone, even with the little he does say when he decides to, that he sounds robotic, like he doesn't actually know how to speak. the more you interact with him, the more you see that there's some part of him that's trying to connect... well, something, although you're not sure what it is. you don't know what you're looking for but you get the feeling that you'll know what it is when you find it. how deep are you willing to dig to find the gold beneath the surface?

the shoe is by far on the other foot at this point. hongjoong used to be a victim of your jokes, ridicule and flat-out abuse. what's unnerving is the fact that you're the one on the receiving end this time. you can't tell if he remembers you or not as he never says your name, or anything else for that matter. he doesn't even look at you like he recognizes you. when you start to apologize, bringing up the past between you two, it's not just a matter of whether you mean it or you're just trying to save your own hide. it's also a matter of whether or not he believes you.
