general consensus: it seems all of those who have commented, including myself, are in favour of higher minimum ages as we're an aging(lol that sounds weird) group.
another research blog from that definitely has a purpose behind it lmao (mainly for me because i'm um'ing and ah'ing over a potential faceclaim but their age is just about cutting it a little too close for my personal taste and i'm also curious).
i'm not doing a poll on this one because if you'd like to put in your two cents, i'd love to get your thoughts on it rather than limit yourself to the short options a poll gives.
in any given roleplay(whether it's an au, semi-au or non au) the minimum age has, as a blanket rule, always been 18 internationally. i'm not disputing that, tbh i think even 18 is an iffy minimum depending on the context of the roleplay but in my stalking roleplays experience, heavier or mature themed roleplays have started to up that age limit to 19 or 20.
so the question is this:
what's your personal opinion on minimum ages in maturer au roleplays? especially where it's a given that there will be platonic/romantic/ual relationships between roleplayer characters. is the minimum of 18 internationally ok? should it be raised to 19/20/21/another age all together? Do you think that your irl age impacts how you feel about roleplaying a faceclaim of a certain age?

there is absolutely no judgement whatsoever if you want to put forward your opinion unless it's genuinely illegal or morally/ethically wrong(if this is the case of your opinion, don't even bother posting it). i will be posting a comment myself which you can respond too if you have an answer for it and to help others potentially feel more comfortable in giving their own opinion.

In terms of faceclaim, it would be best to go for the oldest age of consent (20 but there may be even older examples). Even if it’s roleplay, we are using FACECLAIMS here, so it would be good to keep in mind the ages of these faceclaims. Using faceclaims who are considered underaged in their countries can be problematic since there’s lots of legal issues going on — we are using REAL PEOPLE to roleplay here.

As for the RPer themselves, probably best to also just keep it to the oldest age of consent. A lot of times, adults just don’t want to get involved with minors because it’s not only dangerous for the minors, but it’s also dangerous for the adults. Of course, we can’t tell if someone’s lying about their age or not — in that scenario, just drop everything and run the moment you learn the truth, no one will blame you.

going to try and be brief, but it's so funny you bring this up bc i was JUST thinking about how i want us to start implementing an ooc age limit AS WELL AS an ic one. ESPECIALLY in mature rps. literally started doing this for my own rp (not open yet) because i feel like it's too many risks involved in having minor rpers in a mature rp. like don't get me wrong, a lot of us were minors doing we shouldn't have been doing, but nichiren literally had to deal with police and iirc because minors were engaging in ty material on aff way back when. like, crimes can and will be committed, whether knowingly or unknowingly, but i think this helps as a safety precaution for all parties involved. and honestly, crime aspect aside, i think it just makes more sense to have this implemented in roleplays because it would put people more at ease to know they aren't risking anything major (like idk maybe getting in trouble with parents on one end for writing about tw stuff, or ig writing tw stuff with a minor on the other end) with someone else. idk i'm not articulating things as well as i could rn bc busy and typing fast, but i'm all for this idea.

also, i'm all for 20 and 21+ rps being the norm for mature aus, to answer another question you asked. i also think irl age, for me personally, DOES impact how i feel about roleplaying certain fcs of a certain age for sure. like, rping someone who is 20 at my age (which isn't too far off) would still make me feel like i'm a little too old. that's just me though. and it also depends on what i'm using the fc for. if i need a younger fc for like... a naïve character just setting out in their journey, it would be okay to me to use a younger fc for that bc it makes sense to me, y'know? idk, probably a bad example, but you see my point i hope. i gtg so i'll end it here, but yeah. these are my thoughts.

regarding ooc and muns, i have no idea. i think it's good for rp's to be upfront what their expectations of age is regarding ooc, but if someone wants to lie about their age i firmly believe that is on them (i say as someone who used to lie about their age :"D whoopsie).

i think a lot of ppl think along the lines of "kids are in these mature situations too" and that is true. however, the issue regards the actual fc you are enacting these situations on. it's fine to have that be a background detail, but i believe fcs over the age of 20 (since, as a lot of ppl say, that is the age of legal adults in most asian countries) should be the minimum for both the case of ppl rping 18 or younger while being older or dating older. i think a lot of ppl don't think about the actual fcs being rped, while i think they shouldn't be in the industry at all, it's a matter of respect and protection. these are actual real life kids.

personally, i think an overall rule should be 20+. it makes the most sense. i've spent a lot of my rper life underage (again... so sorry to everyone LMAO rip) but im 21 years old now, and im literally rping someone a year younger than me and im feeling weird about it ghfjds. back in the day i would usually rp people who were like 5+ years older than me and even when more and more idols started debuting around my age, i still stuck to the older people. that's a personal preference.

idk where im going with this uh. but i did like someone's idea of 25+. i think having rps like that would be fun since a lot of rpers are now getting closer to 25.

i think 19+ would be better. is not too young or too old to start with

As a general rule I feel like 20+ should be the standard at this point. As I’ve seen many others say, legal doesn’t always mean morally correct. So I feel like unless you can guarantee that your roleplay remains completely and utterly wholesome at all times (which is kind of impossible since we can only control what people do in our roleplays but so much) then it doesn’t make sense to allow minors.

That being said, up until recently, I had always had the minimum age for my entertainment roleplay be 16. The reason for that was simply because looking at the average age at which idols debuted, the youngest is usually about 16 (although more and more it’s been 14/15 but I wasn’t about to start lowering the age djdbjffn). My ent rp isn’t a mature rp by any means and if there was even speculation of any wrongdoing with minors the person was dealt with accordingly (which I’m honestly very happy (although not happy at the same time cuz it shouldn’t happen at all) to say that I’ve only encountered a situation regarding minors 3 or 4 times in the 8 years I’ve been running my ent au). Now this could be because I myself am closing in on 30 (I turn 26 in a few weeks) but the older I get the weirder I feel even seeing younger faceclaims much less rping with them. So, my ent au joined the rest of my rps in being 18+ or higher. Now because I generally do allow people to alter their characters ages, I also implemented a rule where if they are 18-21 irl then you can NOT change the age of your character. And even though 22+ faceclaims can, it’s still only 5 years. That was done because I’ve actually had people join my roleplays with faceclaims that are in their 30s and try to play them as like 18 year olds and maybe it’s just me but that’s just as weird to me.

As a personal rule, in terms of the faces I roleplay myself I used to never play anyone younger than the year I was born in. And tbh I still typically do only rp faces that are my age or older with the exception of a few 4th Gen artists that have caught my eye and sparked some muse. But even then the youngest I’ve ever gone is 2000 (although I do have Keeho from P1Harmony (2001) and Ningning from Aespa (2002) as muses but I haven’t been able to actually rp them for various reasons lmao).

I blabbed a lot so I’m sorry it’s a bad habit sjdbfjfn but basically to sum up I feel that if the roleplay is more on the sfw, wholesome, platonic side then there should be nothing wrong with allowing 18+ or 19+ (though of course in the end that’s based on how the admin(s) personally feel). But anything that’s darker, more mature, or where romantic relationships are either the main focus or a huge part of the roleplay, then I say 20+. As a personal rule I generally don’t play anyone under 21 internationally irl but /most/ of my muses tend to either be born in the same year as me or are older. And even for my characters, if I change their age I usually don’t go younger than 1998. But I’m also traumatized and so I typically don’t join rps that are not my own anymore so I have a lot more…confidence? probably not the right word but I’m dumb so whatever djdnfjfnfn

21+.
Because regardless of legal age in different regions of the world, anyone below the age of 21 is barely an adult. this goes for whatever relationship rpers might want to write about; it is iffy for a 30yr old to pursue someone who is just 20, to me.

I say 20+ because some Asian countries have 20 as the age of majority. And I'm not about to let someone write someone whose an adult in US terms but a minor in their home country.

I’ve made a blog prior on my stance on such a thing and keeping younger face claims out of the way from being put in harmful situations. My opinion, legal doesn’t always mean morally correct. even thats a bit subjective in itself i suppose but i feel like 20+ is always the best option especially since i know the majority of rpr are older than me. so i look at it like ‘why are you, a grown adult, wanting to play someone who still has TEEN in their age?” I feel like more rps are becoming 19+ and 20+ and personally, that really makes me happy because say you allow this 18 year old in your rp but someone is 30 and goes after them, do you see what I’m saying? It feels icky even if they meet the bare minimum legal requirement.

Unless of course the internet rule is implemented but even still its best not to put younger face claims in potential positions like that yk? bcs ppl dunno how to act right with younger faceclaims )3

SORRY IF I DONT MAKE SENSE BTW BABES
im really hung over and just woke up so lmk if i read this wrong LOLOL

i do 20+ because it's easy for me to do the math and honestly I'm sort of traumatized that '02 liners are 20 now but it's whatever because by 20 they're plenty adult so i personally have no valid arguments against it besides 'but babie???? >:00' but for more mature rps i wouldn't argue against having 25+ faceclaims only, especially since that just opens me up to more og second gen faceclaims that i haven't used in a hot minute that i miss a ton. honestly, if you're feeling weird about rping young faceclaims, you could probably use the half plus seven rule to at least give you a rough comfortable range of ages that it wouldn't feel weird rping. it's actually an old internet relationship rule for the youngest age you can date but i think it'd be adaptable for this sort of dilemma if it's eating you up. say you're 25, you probably wouldn't be too comfortable rping anybody younger than 19.5 or over 36.

My thoughts regarding minimum age is a bit convoluted; it's a lot of 'but what about this thing but oh, there's that other thing to think about too' and general back and forth when trying to figure out whether a face claim is age appropriate for me to roleplay.

I say age appropriate for me because I will never roleplay a character that is under age and as i mentioned in the blog, i feel that 18 can be really iffy as well but i find that is more about when i'm viewing/joining of mature or roleplays. But 18 means that, legally, you are an adult. So it's ok. But it feels wrong. I think it's because i'm 24 years old IRL and it's so true when I read comments from people my age and older that 18~ year olds look so young. You(general you) don't really think about it because you(or at least i do) still feel like an 18 year old in my head but I look at these young adults, then at myself and there is such a huge difference in appearance.

I find that I'm much more comfortable roleplaying as and with muses that are 21+(i mean, if you know me, you know i'm an almost exclusive Jeongguk roleplayer and he's 25) and I think it's because of my age and where I'm at mentally. This thought process doesn't apply to anybody else because, as i've said in the blog, it's my personal thoughts but i'm curious to hear if there's any people who agree, disagree and why?

Honestly I tend to go more for 19+
While ages of consent where I’m from vary from 16-18, in sk I think it’s 19 internationally and I tend to prefer to make sure every muse is legal even if they aren’t intending on doing the deed
