The part you play all comes down to the your character - Like Eunyeong: A gruff factory wroker with no family, her bending having unlocked after a devastating tragedy when she was 16. Now she works the factory floor with other fire benders, forging the steel needed throughout the nations, using each passing day to strengthen herself for the path of fate she believes her Goddess has set her on. 

Learn how to use your bending over time, by earning points to level your abilities, and become as prepped for conflict as possible. 

And maybe you and Eunyeong could spar, showing comradery through rigorous training. You wouldn't even have to be a Fire National, as the boarders are open to all.
