As the name suggests, civilians are average city dwellers with various professions. As they live within the existing walls, their survival rate is high. However, as soon as a wall is breached, they are at the mercy of the titans. It is the responsibility of the military to see to their immediate evacuation.

Soldiers in the Trainee Corps undergo three years of training to join one of the three factions of the military. They usually help out the Garrison when needed, but in times of no emergency, they simply train. Trainees have a high survival rate as they do not see battle too often, although the training can sometimes be dangerous or even deadly. As they are inexperienced, however, they usually barely stand a chance against real titans.

The Garrison is the largest faction of the military. Members typically stay within the walls and defend the city when the need arises. They man the large cannons mounted on the walls, orchestrate clean up operations, evacuate civilians when a wall is breached, and essentially do whatever is necessary to defend the people. Survival rate in the Garrison isn't incredibly high, but it is still higher than that in the Survey Corps. Soldiers in the Garrison generally have an average amount of experience, but this varies largely based on inherent skill.

The Survey Corps venture outside the relative safety of the walls into titan territory. Their main mission is to recapture lost human territory and discover more about the nature of the titans. Since the breach of the walls, they have been focused on setting up a supply route for a large army to retake the old walls. The Survey Corps consists of the most experienced of all troops, but all its members are, to say the least, a bit off their rocker. Survival rate in this faction is incredibly low: in a single expedition, at least thirty percent of the troops are lost.

In order to be a part of the Military Police, a trainee must be at least in the top ten of his or her class. The Military Police are a highly skilled faction of elite soldiers who defend the King and maintain order from the interior of the walls. Despite being highly talented and having so much potential, they are woefully underexperienced from living in the interior. Few Military Police have ever been in battle, and corruption within this faction is rampant. However, it is the most coveted faction due to its extremely high survival rate.
