— a cheonmin class of ilpae gisaengs. they are the flowers of hanseong known for their beauty and artistic prowess in singing, dancing, and poetry. they are of the highest tier of gisaengs and are unable to entertain after 30. it was first established by a woman by the name of "seo jinhye" and while her background remains a mystery to most, it was said that she was revered as a lady who brought men from all over the country to her doorstep when she danced. she was a madame but she was also a mother to most girls she adopted. they all had one thing in common: the want and desire for a new beginning. after her death, the gisaeng house, sook, and title of madame went to "seo rim", her eldest and longest adoptive daughter, who after leaving for tamna, passed her title onto her adoptive sister, seo min.

hailing from gimje, jeolla-do, the house of the black eagles of the jungin class is best known for their influence in both the political and consumerist spheres. many members of their family run businesses that are of different fields, though a majority focus on trade. competition runs in their blood, even within the family. they are best known for their international trades and connections, as well as running multiple businesses.

originally from tamna, the boo family laid its roots in hanseong when famed painter, boo wonsik, became a royal court painter. the boos are known for their gifted abilities in the arts, which have earned them a reputable image in society. however, this image has been stained by wonsik's son, boo sukku, a respected artist who succumbed to addiction to gambling and drugs. while yangban families chase after them for their work, loan sharks hunt them down to collect their debt. even with their talent and hustle, they aren’t able to shake off the gold digging rumors. the consequences of sukku's actions have trickled down to his children, who have been forced to help pay off his debt since childhood with their respective crafts. despite the desire to sever the bond with their father, each child is held back for a reason of their own and a shared, dark family secret.

❁ gu, house of the oak tree

an old yangban clan originating from the region just north of the capital. each generation held a vital role in government, quietly exerting their influence over joseon. well-known for being conservative and elitist, they are partly feared and partly respected by the lower classes. the gu clan was also noticeably at odds with queen min's modern ideologies such as opening up the social season to lower classes. their sudden fall to cheonmin came with the revelation of the eldest son gu won's attempted treason and serial murders in the summer of 1868. gu won was executed and the family disgraced. they were exiled from the capital, their wealth confiscated and banished to the poorest region in joseon to work the crops.

— originating from ullleung-do, a small island in the east sea, the min family’s origins were constructed of pirates who settled onto the island in the 1400s. however, due to difficulties and clashes between joseon and nihon over the fishing rights and water trade routes, the government adopted an “empty-island” policy, thus mandating residents to move onto the mainland. the min family remained as one of the few families in ulleung-do due to the family’s head of house who adamantly refused and combated those who dared to strip him and his family from their home. however, when the head of the house succumbed to his final battle, his wife and daughters were ushered onto the mainland and sold as property. it was not until the eldest daughter gained her freedom that she sought to reunite her family.

♥ the ahn family is full of jewelers and goldsmiths, their expertise reaching jade goods as well. they have served the royal family and upper classes in all of their accessory needs, from headpieces, hair pins, earrings, to anything else the affluent lord or lady could want. their expertise is unrivaled, and the elite often visit their store to custom order pieces for their special someone. while men are the main workers in this family, the women are often consulted for their fine eyes and knowledge.

a cheonmin clan consisting of household nobis, who chose this path to escape crushing poverty and are known for their good relations with yangbans for years, often residing near them in Sunchang, Jeolla-do. under unknown circumstances the current living members of the family moved back to Yeongam after rumors of improper behaviors and scandalous affairs surfaced. not much is known about their whereabouts ever since, as they remain isolated from the public eye and are believed to engage with farm labor as non-resident nobis, still tied to their yangban master despite the speculated family conflict between them.

the han family, house of the eternal baptisia, is a jungin clan that has their origins from inje, gangwondo. with the clan having large influence over import and trade, the family has been fairing well due to their continuous participations in the developing trade process. as their family dips their hands into many types of practices, the lineage is well known to have scholars, scribes and ceramists to which enables their clan to have a famed image of non-conventional expertise in many categories.

❁ the cheon family, house of the falcon, a sangmin clan that has long settled in goseong. the family is known for their expertise in domesticating animals particularly falcons, practicing falconry for generations and had once led the office of eungbang before it was abolished early 1800s. prior to its abolishment, the previous head of the family was held responsible for a rampant falcon that had ruined the then-king's hunt therefore leading to the cheons stripped of the title and demoted from yangban to that of sangmin class. despite their demotion, the family still uphold falconry practices and remain to be one of well known falconers around. they provide private falconary for the higher class during winter.

from a small city called pohang in the northern gyeongsang province, the hans have always been a family of strong soldiers and warriors. it was an honour for the family to serve those of higher status, being given the name 'the family of blades' for their expertise in martial arts, swordsmanship, horseriding, and strength. they are loyal to those they serve, which explains why they have a long line of loyalty to the parks. han dongyeol, a retired bodyguard and right-hand man to park yeongjun (yeonghan's father) and it was natural that dongwook would be the same for duke park despite being the youngest son of the hans.
