wolfsbane q&a!
frequently asked questions
•••••••
below are a couple of questions that i have either been asked or that i feel might be asked about wolfsbane institute. hopefully the answers to these questions will paint a clearer picture of the roleplay, its purpose, and perhaps give you all some insight on how you want to build your characters.

01. how concrete is the rp lore?
the lore behind this roleplay is very loose and not anything like you'd see in a high fantasy setting. i oftentimes find that when the lore of an rp is too airtight people will spend more time trying to build a perfect character rather than interacting and roleplaying with others.

02. what is the purpose/history behind the institute?
wolfsbane institute is a joint collaboration between formed by a joint pair of anonymous elder vampires and witches, created for the purpose of helping young vampires control their powers and learn to live among humans in a way that is "socially acceptable." how your muses ended up at the institute and what they do there is up to you.

03. what time period is this roleplay set in?
this roleplay is set in a pretty ambiguous time period. however, there are going to be rooms available for bars and nightclubs, so do with that information what you will.

04. do humans know that vampires and witches exist? if so, what is their overall opinion on them?
humans are well aware of the existence of both vampires and witches. however, the general attitude towards vampires in this society is a pretty negative one. many people fall for the negative stereotypes surrounding vampires (i.e. "they're all filthy bloodsucking murderers") after one unfortunate incident many years ago, and as such, the environment for vampires has become pretty hostile. the institute provides a safe space for vampires to learn to control themselves and their thirst so that no more situations arise that might make the environment for them worse than it already is.
witches, on the other hand, are generally met with positive reception because at the end of the day, the witches are still human.

05. how do the witches view the vampires?
the witches are on an overall friendlier and more civil basis with the vampires and therefore the only other students allowed to live at the institute alongside the vampire population.

06. why are witches the only ones allowed to be at the institute?
due to the nature of the institute's built-in feeder program, it is wiser and safer for witches to be the ones to attend. witches will at least have the powers that mundane humans otherwise would not to protect themselves in case one of their vampires loses themselves in a frenzy.

07. are you allowed to have a vampire parent and a witch parent? (aka, are hybrids allowed?)

hybrids are not allowed for the time being, primarily for the sake and the ease of sorting out the character masterlist. if, however, you wish for your muse to have been raised by a vampire and a witch, or you wish for them to perhaps be adopted into a family of one or the other, or your character is in a step-parent kind of situation, that is more than allowed.

08. are there sub-types to the magic disciplines?

yes and no. the areas of magic listed serve as a baseline for the types of magic your characters can study at the institute. if you would like for them to study a sub-type or sub-concentration, by all means feel free.

ex. an aeromancy vampire can choose to study a specific weather phenomenon or work with cloud divination ; a baneful witch can branch out into areas of black magic or shadow magic if they choose.

09. what is the feeder program?
the feeder program is a built-in feature that lets young witches attend this institute for free. upon entry, they'll be paired up at random with a vampire for the entire duration of their study there as their personal living blood source. the vampire families pay for their student to have a feeder, and that money goes toward's the witch's tuition costs. if the vampire is a faculty member, they themselves will pay to have a feeder, and that money goes towards the witch's salary if they are faculty, or towards tuition if they're a student.

more information on this program is currently available in the feeder info room under the information tab, so please be sure to read it when you have the time.

09-a. are there any rules to the feeder program?

yes, but those rules only apply for ic lore purposes. you can throw those rules right out the window in your plots for all i care. i only expect you'll follow the rp's general rules that are listed on the roleplay's landing page.

10. how will the feeders be assigned?
i'll be putting everyone's names into two separate generators (one for vampires, one for witches) and generating the pairs randomly. this will guarantee that just about everyone has an established connection upon the roleplay's opening date so you all aren't spending a week trying to find people.

if for any reason there is an uneven ratio of vampires to witches, you will temporarily be waitlisted and paired up once the ratio evens out again.

11. what is the magic system like?

the magic system is very nature and research based. there is a list of magical affinities for vampires as well as a list of the types of magic witches can choose to study available in their respective rooms, witches and vampires.

there is some overlap in some of the magics studied here (as denoted in the rooms) so chances are you'll be seeing a lot of your peers in your classes if you study similar disciplines.

11-a. can you have more than one magic focus?

yes and no. if you find that your magic area of focus isn't quite cutting it out for you or doesn't give you enough inspiration, you're more than welcome to change your magic focus.

your main magic type is the one you were either born with or that you chose as the focal point of your magical studies (i.e the main area of magic your muse uses). technically, though, you can adopt any of the available magic types for your muses and have secondary, even tertiary, magic focuses.

12. what are we allowed to do in the roleplay?

you are free to do just about anything you want within reason as long as it doesn't fall too far outside of the roleplay's general setting and you aren't being disrespectful towards the other roleplayers. your muses can be as sweet or as problematic as you want them to be. i will not put limits on things like pregnancies, drinking, substance use, etc. this is a very open and very free roleplay so be creative and do what you want. within reason.

NOTE: if you decide to roleplay any topics that may be triggering, you need to put warnings at the BEGINNING of your replies if they're in public rooms. otherwise, triggering or more sensitive topics can be roleplayed on your walls or in character PMs.

try to keep as many posts in the rooms or on your walls as possible as i will be doing periodic activity checks. i want to make sure no one ends up getting ghosted because the people they're roleplaying with suddenly went MIA.

there is information about hiatuses available if people need to take them and i urge you to read up on it when you have a moment.

13. what will the overall community atmosphere be like in this roleplay?

i am aiming for this to give off the vibe of those older aff and rpr roleplays where everyone talked and interacted with everyone equally. this community is meant to be open and meant to be fun.

we don't allow for things like userchasing, facechasing, ship chasing, or bubble roleplaying, and whatever you roleplay with one character could have direct consequences on your character's relationship with another. it keeps the rp fun, the drama rich, and the connections interesting.

14. how will the admins address any hidden hatred or conflict between users?

first, let it be known that we will not be tolerating any ooc drama of any kind. we are all here to roleplay.

it's not required that you interact with every single person, nor your assigned partner if you don't want, but i also urge you not to stay in bubbles if you know there are users that you have no prior conflicts with that you feel you'd be comfortable around. if someone makes you uncomfortable, do not interact with them at all. period.

you should understand the nature of the random assignments prior to joining.

that being said, if you have issues with another user who might be joining, bring them to the admin immediately. i will work with you collaboratively to find a solution that works out in all parties' favors, as i don't want people ooc to feel uncomfortable or unsafe in this roleplay. we're all adults here, so we can have adult conversations about these things.

15. what if there's a user joining that i have conflicts with? what if i potentially get partnered with them?

alert the dean via PMs immediately. i'll be doing the random assignments only after everyone has gotten adequately settled in. i will not partner you with someone you have prior ooc conflicts with or someone who makes you uncomfortable.

if problems ooc do arise with your partners, please let me know immediately. i can always arrange for several users to not partake in the random partner assignments if that makes them more comfortable. the last thing anyone wants is for any bad blood to be drawn ooc over a random ic pairing generated for the fun of the rp.

15-a. what if someone causes an issue for me during my time in the rp?

i will ask that you raise the issue to my attention immediately and provide unedited receipts of the claims you're making about the user in question. these receipts should only be of the current issue at hand and not some beef you had with them six months ago.

i ask for unedited receipts because it's easy for both parties to write a convincing sob story to get someone to take their side in an argument. raw receipts give me a detailed word for word outline on what's happened and allow me to remain impartial to the situation so that i can make an unbiased and sound judgment.

after you come to me, i will go have a private chat with them and they will get a singular warning to cease the behavior and stop interacting with you. if you or another user raises a similar second complaint after their first warning, the problematic user will then be respectfully removed from the roleplay and blacklisted permanently from all future roleplays ran on this account.

we are not high schoolers. we are adults and we are going to handle these situations maturely. do not let the above scenario happen.

16. earlier you mentioned that our roleplays with one person could have ic consequences with another. can you give an example of what those ic consequences might look like?

my best example is one from my own experience: back in the days where i still roleplayed on aff, a friend and i had initially planned for our characters to date each other. while we were roleplaying together, we were also roleplaying with a bunch of other people and everyone in that circle was in everyone's business. everyone knew what was going on with everyone else's characters.

cutting to the chase of it, my character and his best friend got very, very close with one another, and neither of their s/o's liked that at all. the best friend and my character's s/o fought a lot over the course of that roleplay because during that time, the best friend had developed unrequited feelings for my character. those unrequited feelings also caused issues with the best friend's s/o during that time as well and that s/o got into it with my character on more than one occasion.

none of those unrequited feelings or the ic fights were planned ahead of time. they just happened as a result of how open our rp circles were. we would even discuss ooc how we sometimes felt bad because the way we all wrote those characters' interactions was so natural and tugged at the heartstrings. keep in mind, though, that this took place when roleplaying was a lot more loose and had less restrictions.

obviously this was all ic. ooc there were no hard feelings anywhere and that's how roleplays should be. good doses of ic drama but keeping the friendly vibe ooc. we were all still friends at the end of the day but the ic drama was absolute chef kiss.

you should all be careful about doing this nowadays and always make sure every party is on board with what's happening before going into it. i am well aware that the roleplaying community has shifted and things like the above example could pose huge issues with roleplayers in today's time if not discussed beforehand. communicate openly and clearly with each other to avoid conflict and misunderstanding.

17. unrelated, but what happened to all of the characters in your example?

both of the s/o's eventually went inactive because life got busy for them, so my character and his best friend ended up hooking up at the end. (this little tidbit was mutually agreed upon ooc and to be fair, we still had a lot of fun in the rocky ic lead-up to that endgame.)

if you made it this far, i appreciate your continued interest in wolfsbane institute! i'll be adding more questions as they pop up, but i think this covers most of the preliminary information for now.
