How water killed the boy in him.

"Buster! Buster, my boy, can you hear me?"

The first thing Buster hears when he first came into the world was the sound of waves slamming against the shore right outside his home. His family didn't have enough money back then to have Buster birthed in a hospital, so he was delivered at home by a low paying midwife hired by his father. Buster and his family lived close to the shore due to his father being a fisherman.

"Please be alive. I can't lose you."

Despite Buster's arrival into the world, his mother died giving birth to him. The look of adoration for his son immediately shifted to one of utter shock then pain once he caught sight of his wife's hand dropping to the side of the bed, lifeless. It was both a day of miracle and a day of tragedy, but all-in-all an unforgettable one.

Buster's father raised the boy on his own and often brought him along on his boat when he goes fishing. The five year old Buster was deeply facinsated by the ocean and would often be seen leaning over the edge of the boat to get a clearer look at the creatures that lived within those waters. His father would always manage to pull him back whenever he did this.

"I-I told you, Buster— Gods, what did I bloody tell you?!"

However, despite all the scoldings he got, five year old Buster never listened. He kept doing it over and over again until one day— his father's hand wasn't grabbing onto the back of his shirt once he started falling forward. He leaned and leaned until he couldn't lean anymore; until water replaced air within his lungs. He screamed and thrashed around, hoping to the Gods that maybe that can save him. The waves of the ocean were strong that day and it pushes Buster into tumbling towards the shore, leg scraping badly against a large, sharply edged rock. His arms and legs ached from moving it so much and his screaming had only earned him more water entering his throat. It surely didn't help that his left ankle was bleeding from the scrape. Then suddenly all the helpless flailing about came to a halt. His eyes slowly slide shut and his entirety gives up. Oh, how foolish he was to have loved the ocean when it was the one thing that literally kills him.

“I can't be too late... c'mon, Buster!"

His father managed to get into the water and save his son from possible death moments later. He places his son's body onto his boat and begins pressing down on his chest and performing CPR in hopes he could save Buster. It takes a couple of tries but soon enough— Buster violently coughs out a bunch of water. His father almost cries out of joy and begins bringing his boat back to shore. He immediately brings his son to a hospital and gives all the money that he has managed to gain from his job thus far, begging the doctors and nurses to please, please make sure his boy makes it.

It feels like it takes forever but soon enough, Mr. Mason receives good news and is reunited once again with his son. After this incident, Buster's father tells him to never come along with him on his fishing trips. And honestly? Buster was glad. That event caused little Buster to develop a fear for the water. This fear is still strong within Buster's heart till this very day. Sadly, however, it has developed into a hatred towards everything related to the dangerous waters. Ever since he learned about the Thalassans and their existence, he has always avoided ever meeting them and neither does he dream of interacting with one.

this childhood friend was there when buster almost lost his life from drowning. they know why he is so negative and aggressive towards everything related to the water and somehow understand him to an extent. they know he can be a bit much though and that his fear shouldn't also become a hatred for those who live in it. they probably try telling him to tone it down a bit but he's stubborn.
